Love my la pena Horeb! I saw it on door dash and I was ecstatic!!! Ahhh! Y'all don't even know! I live about 25 min away...but my food was hot when it got here...and it was correct! I put specifics and they actually read them and it was correct. I always get the mofongos, tostones, rice and beans, pernil...but I was sad I didn't see the flan! I hope they decide to add it. I am obsessed! This place is hands down better than any other restaurant on the peninsula and south side.

Last month, I ordered takeout from this spot that's been frequented from Sophia and myself. The both of us were never disappointed with our meals. Pre-pandemic, this was a place where we would have dine-in visits with friends of ours from a social group or just the two of us. It was probably close to a year since we last appeared so it was time to stop by.Similiar to the past visits, I called in our orders. They greeted me promptly when I walked in where there was only one table occupied. Quick and easy. For our orders, which both served as dinner and lunch for work at our respective sites, we chose their Cubano sandwich with our usual sides (fries for myself and plantains for Sophia). As always, the sandwich was pretty good packed with ham and roasted pork, pickles, cheese and mustard (both had no mayo). I would've liked for more fries in the box, but I had enough for both servings.La Pena Horeb came through once again. You know I'll be ordering takeout from here down the road. Till next time :)

Yummy, Yummy - My wife and I stumbled across this place after leaving Fort Eustis. The staff was friendly, and the food was delicious. Being originally from Miami, I have eaten my fair share of Cuban Sandwiches; and the one I had here was legit. My wife had a grilled chicken breast smothered with onions which she raved about. To top it off, we shared a bowl of fresh guacamole with a mountain of fresh made chips. If you happen to be near, definitely give this place a shot!

We loved this place when it opened; we even followed them when they moved. But over the years the quality of food has sadly gone down. The last THREE TIMES we went, everything was just dry dry dry. The yuca was old and dry. The steak was dry and covered in undercooked onions, and even the mofongo was sad and dry. Everything, and I mean everything, needed salt. The salt shakers on the table are so sticky, ugh. The only great thing we've had lately was the carnitas. Delicious. What made me the most sad was that the tamarindo was very watered down, on a Friday night at prime dinner time. Whyyyyyy??? I came here mostly because I wanted some of that delicious tamarindo and I was sooo disappointed. I have RAVED to anyone who would listen about their tamarindo!I can't bring this place any more of our money. Especially when the waitresses are only actually nice to us when we bring our Puerto Rican friends with us. When we're here without them, we're treated as if we kinda don't exist. :(

Love this place! The chicharron de pollo is amazing, but the beans and rice are a MUST TRY! I enjoyed this place very much and will be back.

My husband and I visit here every few months. We really should be going more often because it's so good! The staff is so friendly, especially if you're like me and can't pronounce half the menu . They have seating in the restaurant too. We always order to go and it's always ready within 20 mins. They give you HUGE portions so you'll have leftovers! The food is so authentic and delicious.

We got a Cubano and a chicken torta today. Excellent as usual. Service is always top notch and food is good. Prices are fair also. They are always fresh, with plenty of quality ingredients that are well seasoned. If it was closer to home we'd come much more fre

Use to be my favorite Spanish restaurant but I see they have drastically reduced the quality that i remembered . Their Cuban was the best in the city but as of today i will probably never go there for one again. I paid $15 dollars for 1/2 portion of burnt fries and my sandwich was horrible.

This past Friday my date and I went to the La Pena Horeb restaurant in Newport News. Once we arrived we were told by the staff that we could seat ourselves. We sat in a booth near the window. The atmosphere was relaxing with nice music in the background. After a couple of minutes the waitress greeted us with menus. We ordered some chips with cheese dip on the side for an appetizer and for the main course a Caribbean dish called Pernil and a pork burrito. We had water with lemon to drink. The chips were made in house. They were freshly made, hot and delicious. It had a hint of sweetness and was unsalted. These were the only chips I have tasted where you could go two ways in serving them. These chips could be salted and it will taste great. Or you could put powdered sugar with cinnamon on them and it will still taste great. The cheese dip was runny, watered down, and not very good though. The Pernil meal is of a bowl of pulled roasted pork, a ball of steamed white rice, a small cup of beans and a small salad. The roasted pork was seasoned perfectly and hot. It was lightly salted and tasty. The white rice was fresh with a hint of salt. The beans were good and hot. The salad was okay. Then i tasted my date's meal. She ordered a carnitas burrito. This burrito consisted of a 12" tortilla stuffed with rice, pork, beans, lettuce, cheese, tomatoes, and sour cream. I was surprised that it was bland. It did not taste very good. Also, the bathroom and the kitchen did not look clean. This restaurant has good potential. Some of the food was good when we ate it but after some time the food sat in our stomachs. They still need to work on the taste of some of their other foods and do a better job in restaurant cleanliness. We decided we are not going back in the future.

This is our second time trying this place and food is pretty good, affordable, and the lunch portions are very generous. The Trifongo does need a bit more seasoning/ salt. Try their blackberry and soursop smoothies (batidos) and see juices.
