Hayashi Sushi & Grill

For Newport News Restaurant Week, Sophia and I had lunch on our day off from work (MLK Day). Their lunch special cost $20/person so it was a deal we couldn't pass up at all. Let's see if the visit was worth it.Inside, there was a nice crowd on hand. We managed to snag a booth immediately after walking in. They had a nice crowd on hand both in the regular dine-in and in the hibachi area. We were served immediately after being seated. Both of us selected the bento size lunches with me choosing shomai and Sophia picking gyoza for our apps. The shrimp dumplings were really good full of shrimp in each bite. The bento lunch was good but needed seasoning for both the shrimp and veggie tempura. Our dishes didn't come with the ginger dressing and the waiter was very occupied with other tables, but did come at the right time to deliver.Even though it was a bit short of seasoning, lunch filled both of us up for the afternoon. For $20, it was just right. We will surely come back the next time this deal is offered.

Still my favorite place to eat sushi!I'm still not over a Bento box not being $8 or $9 even though I know it's the new norm, so I just trusted my gut and went with what I knew would be tasty and filling for the price. The Delta Force is my FAVORITE sushi roll! The flavor is magnificent and it's NOT spicy or raw! Their shumai is also really good!I also loved that they used to give a first responders discount during the pandemic...maybe they will circle back to that ;)5 STARS! Will continue to be my sushi spot! Their hibachi is also very good!

It's a 2 because the service was just terrible from start to finish. They ask that you not be more than 10min past your reservation time or else they cancel it. The hype surrounding this place wasn't met at all. Food was tasty, at least. This place was enjoyable! We arrived without any reservations, which is a plus. However, I don't recommend doing so, especially if you go to the grill side, because you may not get seated. The grill side is group-seating around a flat-top grill. Each station can seat about eight people. The menu includes beef, chicken, shrimp, fried rice, or noodles. A server will bring your drinks and appetizers. And take your order. As with any hibachi-style grill, the cook will prep everyone's order and then come out to the table and entertain you - it's an entertaining show! There is a full menu on the dining room side, but you don't get grilled items, so ask what your options are when you sit on the dining room side.The service was excellent as they accommodated us without reservations. , and the price was right! Husband's meat had a 5cm hard piece of plastic in it, he was lucky he didn't either choke or cut his tongue on it - manager offered 10% off his meal only. He requested his steak rare, it came out medium. I ordered mine medium, it came out brown through and through, dry, and chewy, black on the outside. Daughter got fried rice even after requesting white rice 3 times. Ultimately manager agreed to 30% off of husband's meal only. The bill came out to near $300 even with the token discount off husband's meal. For good food, the cost is not an issue. But the manager's stingy attitude soured our experience. No empathy or real concern about plastic in the food, more of a "that happens sometimes" attitude. Thankfully it wasn't our 8yo choking on the plastic. 2 stars bc our waitress was nice - but we won't be back.

We had a fantastic time and thoroughly enjoyed the experience. This is a great spot to introduce someone to a Japanese steakhouse for hibachi. We brought my son's best friend, and he was amazed. The food was excellent, and the staff were very pleasant. The chef was both amazing and funny, making it our favorite hibachi restaurant. The restaurant is clean and has a slightly upscale appearance. This was the first time we sat at a hibachi table, and it was worth it. The first time we came, we didn't have a reservation and had to sit at a regular table and order off the regular menu. So, one thing to note is that you need to have a reservation. Parking can be challenging with street parking, and you may have to walk a bit. There might be a parking garage nearby, but I'm not sure of its distance from the restaurant.

This was my first time dining at Hayashi & I was not overly impressed. We got there as soon as they opened & the front seating area was filthy. Dirty napkins on the table w/ water logged magazines, straw wrappers laying all over the floor and in the couch. The couch looked like it hasn't had a sanitary wipe down in awhile, I chose to stand while we waited to be sat. The floors were sticky and it was a full turnoff. Once we got to our table we met our server Lucas who was an absolute sweetheart, we truly enjoyed his personality & attentiveness. The chef was very nice, and made us laugh with his puns and cooking tricks. All in all the food was what you can expect from a typical hibachi bar .. clear soup, salad, hibachi chicken, rice, veggies, noodles & sushi. I'm huge on sanitation and that's why I gave 3 stars, there was not anything that stood out to me but the staff was very nice and that's why I scored so highly.

Made a 6:00 reservation for tonight, they called and confirmed it this morning. We arrived 10 til 6 and were told our reservation was listed for 6:30. Not ok! We did not stay. Too pricy for such incompetence. Do better Hayashi!
