Last night, I went to Guava for the first time to try to see Mariah the Scientist. The establishment is really cute with both an inside and outside. There were 2 separate DJs (I'm assuming) for both areas and I liked either music playing! I felt like the outside had more of an RNB vibe while the inside was more hyped with rap so it was nice having that kind of variety for whatever mood you're in. The service was 10/10 for a busy bar. The bartender I went to was quick, professional, and caring. There was so many people and she really did her thing zooming around to get everything for everybody so the bar cleared out fast every time a new wave of people came over for a drink. I ordered jerk wings and the kitchen did amazing! I was really tearing them up at the bar They were perfectly sauced, seasoned, and had the right amount of spiciness to it. I also love the affordability. For both the wings and fries, the combo was $9. My friends ordered the oxtails and unfortunately for them, they said it was too salty and there was no other flavoring to it. So overall, I really dig this place! I came for Mariah the Scientist, but this is now on my go to list for spots to vibe at on a late Saturday night and my go to for jerk wings lol

Advertised a birthday dinner for me to get there with 12 ppl and you only have wings fries and pizza...lady at the door "can't leave her seat" looked up from her phone to tell me to pay then when I say I already reserved a table she say "ok" and look back down in her phone..."am I to seat myself?" ..."oh no the receptionist is coming" ...oh gee thanks ....you sell me a high table for six....not one table is set up for 6 ppl, we sit in a corner booth fine cause I really have 12 ppl now. Happy hour almost over and waitress busy getting waters so a few of us walk up to the bar for a round. Bartender looking at bottle labels hard like he don't know his liquors then tell us he only got enough of this tequila for 3 shots, they're waiting on a liquor delivery you've got 3/4 food items from your dinner menu and limited liquor...one of my friends came back and said they going to ABC or somewhere to get liquor smh...had to hunt for the soap down behind the sink in the bathroom and no paper towels. My whole party was hungry and complaining. Embarrassing. Some birthday...not to mention they charging $20 JUST TO GET IN on a Wednesday. so not worth it. also the booth seats are a velvet material so they are full of nasty stains and food crumbs

Went here for a creator event "Create Her Tea Party" and I'm so happy the event was hosted there because this place was so nice! The decor inside was soooo cute and a great vibe. All of the waitresses were very friendly and sweet and made being there enjoyable. We had pre-selected menu options, I ordered the port omelet that came with home fries and my mom got the shrimp and grits. The food was phenomenal and the cream sauce that came on the grits was very good. We also ordered moscato wine and had mimosas; both were sweet and tasty. I definitely will be going back to try their other foods and drinks. Overall rate of experience: 9/10

I never get to this side of the water, but an errand had me in the area and Siri said it had a decent rating so I stoped by. It was a Wednesday (happy hour day) but I got there really early so I was the only one there at the time. The staff were friendly, the environment was nice. There are real Vegan options, not just fries and condiment sandwiches. Cauliflower Steaks, Jackfruit. I'm not vegan but when my circle goes out my vegan friend kinda gets shafted. This made me happy. The drink was on point, have a Guava lemon drop. The food was good. I had the red snapper, green beans and collard greens (which were fresh). I also got the Jackfruit sandwich for lunch the next day. There's a skill to making food look good in a takeout tray, but they did pretty good. I didn't give it 5 stars because I wasn't there during a busy time and I'm not sure if the service would be as good if it was. But I'l be back and let y'all know.

Went here with my daughter for a ticketed Tea party event. There were select items you could choose from on the menu. I went with the shrimp and grits and home fries/potatoes. It was absolutely delicious 10/10! The waitresses were very sweet and came to check on us every now and then which was very nice. Loved the food, the decor of the restaurant, and the drinks. Definitely will be going back to try their other menu items!

I had a really good experience. The restaurant is absolutely gorgeous, it's unassuming from the outside but it has a nice size dinning room and a large patio as well as bar seating. I was greeted and seated as soon as I walked up to host stand. Our server greeted our table within a minute of us sitting down. She brought us water and gave us time to get adjusted without hovering. She made sure to check on us a good amount of times. We ordered several item menus to include cocktails, apps, and entrees and they did not disappoint.I felt like this restaurant did a good job fusing Carrie an food and soul food. All of our dishes were flavorful and cooked well. One of the owners came out to say hi and chatted a bit which was awesome. The food was great, the staff was great, and the ambiance was great. I can't wait to come back for brunch. It seems like a nice and quiet place on the weekdays and a hotspot on Wednesday and Sundays.

Good evening, fellow Yelpers! It's your favorite critic again with another astonishing find! A place called: Guava located in Portsmouth, Virginia. My wife and I met 2 other couples here to celebrate a birthday!! It wasn't hard to find (right off the main road, in a complex). The exterior is misleading yet inviting. As soon as we walked in, we were met by security (an off-duty officer), who performed his task. We mutually understood each other's assignment and a smooth transaction it was. The hostess was there to escort us to a table or booth, but our party was already seated, and we freely stepped to our section. The menus were clearly detailed, and whatever questions you had, the waitress explained it perfectly! The vibe was R&B with all "soul"! Nothing but good vibes/energy, laughter, and harmony. I thoroughly enjoyed it there. Will definitely be returning and telling everyone who will listen that this is a "must" on your list of establishments to check out in 2024 and beyond. We arrived late, so I could not tell you what everyone ordered. It was gone when we got here. One important thing that really stuck out was: The owner came to our table and personally "thanked" us for coming to his place of business and how much it was appreciated! I mean, how many restaurants do you go to, where that happens? I will forever be a patron here, which means the world to people who look to go out to have an awesome & memorable time, without all the craziness that is going on in the world today. Make it your business to come out and check it out for yourself, you wont be disappointed and very glad that you did! Last but not least, The FOOD, (I almost forgot, lol). Incredible

We pulled up to Guava around 1230 on a Sunday to try out the brunch. I've been here previously at night but I got a better look and feel for the place this time. The aesthetic is very nice. Nice details through the restaurant. Selfie spots are available. It was very clean, even the restroom. We were immediately sat down even though we didn't have a reservation. Our waitress was ok, she wasn't very attentive even though the place wasn't packed. The food was TOP TIER! The lamb chops were cooked to perfection and seasoned perfectly. The grits didn't need any help they were perfect. The oxtails were tender and that cabbage will make you want to slap someone. They also offer hookah. The only reason I didn't give them 5 stars is first it's cold in there. Even my first time visiting it was cold. Also they didn't have any champagne for the mimosas. And my waitress wasn't attentive and we had to look for her when we were ready to go. Go check them out, this is a great hidden treasure in Portsmouth!

This place was highly recommended. I love supporting a good black owned business. I ate here for my birthday, and the ambiance was nice . I ordered the lamp chops over garlic mash and green beans which were amazing, because clearly I cleaned the plate. I had their take on a old fashioned, which was a Caribbean old fashioned with allspice dram and Plantation Rum. Is was indeed delicious. The server Bri was super sweet and she helped us a lot with all the recommendations.Besides that, the staff looked tired and angry. They were drinking more at the bar then actually working. The bathroom was horrible. The doors barely closed. Dirty , unkept, no soap to wash hands. We were told we could just go over to the club when it opened. Which had a door connected to the restaurant. We were told to go outside the restaurant, down the street to go into the club section. We wanted to have Hookah too , 50 dollars is very high. Probably the highest I have ever seen here in the 757.This place could be something, but we have to do better with quality service. But it was a beautiful spot, and the chef did not disappoint!!
