A wonderful way to see Colonial WilliamsburgColonial Williamsburg is a living-history museum presenting a part of the historic district in the city of Williamsburg, Virginia as it was in the past with period people and the buildings as they would have been. You can drive and park in one of the many parking lots and visit for free by just walking around. If you want to get the most out of your tour you can visit the Visitors' center located about 1/2 mile away or visit the Lumber house and buy a ticket that allows you access to more of the shops and sites inside the town. There are carriage rides that are offered. You cannot buy the tickets in advance. You have to purchase them on the day you visit. There are 2 ways to accomplish this. You can buy them at the visitors' center or in the town lumber building. If you want to do this then be first in line as they often sell out very quickly. We were lucky and got a ticket ($65 for the carriage). The driver was very professional in helping us get in and out of the open car. He did not give a tour but was very willing to answer any questions that we asked him. The ride takes about 15-30 minutes and is a delightful way to see the various town buildings. I would recommend it for anyone wanting a really unique way of seeing this beautiful old town.

The offering's at this building in CW are just a redundancy of what you can get/do at the visitor's center. But, if you need a pass/tickets/information/map and are on DOG Street, this is it. Back during the times of the pandemic/lockdown, the staff would sit in the two front windows and they had credit card terminals attached to the outside of the building, but things are now same as it ever was with needing to go inside. Also, at different points in time with CW this was a spot where evening walking tours/ghost tours have started but aside from carriage rides, that hasn't happened in a while.Below is a loooong history of the 18th century buildings on this lot.research.colonialwilliamsburg.org/DigitalLibrary/view/index.cfm?doc=ResearchReports%5CRR1265.xml&highlight=

Very nice folks in here that will assist with your carriage ride tour. It's not cheap, but is a cool was to take a guided tour of the grounds. I had hoped to take my daughter for a ride this past week by they were booked.Get your tickets early, this is a major attraction and the rides cut off by 1 PM most days.

You can purchase a carriage ride ticket online or at the Williamsburg visitor center or lumber house ticket office. My husband purchased a carriage ride for the two of us as part of my birthday present. I recommend purchasing them ahead of time online during peak season as I can see this selling out fast. The only thing is you have to redeem your voucher for an actual ticket if you buy online which we did. I think you possibly can redeem the voucher at the lumber house ticket office also- which is more ideal since the carriage posts are right outside their office. Be on time! They tell you to wait 15 minutes prior to your scheduled time, because they will leave without you!! There are two, maybe 3 different carriages. One that looks like a stage coach and another an open air one that is golden. We rode in the exact golden carriage that Queen Elizabeth rode in. My husband's ass sat exactly where royalty's cheeks touched. Haha.. Our driver was a young lady named Lillian. She offered us the option to decide where we wanted to take our stroll within the vicinity. We shared a ride with another couple, luckily they were nice and easy going. You risk the chance of sharing a carriage ride if you don't book the entire seats. It was a 20 minute pleasant relaxing ride that was informative. It was $20 pp for 20 minutes. It was hot outside and only the tail end of April. I can definitely feel for the horses and carriage drivers in the summer when it's even hotter. One thing I know for sure is they are making bank because they churn out these carriage rides 3x an hour (20 min rides , 4 people atThe most in a carriage 12 people an hour) at the most $240 an hour! At any rate it was a short lovely ride and a novel way to see colonial williamsburg. I have been on a carriage ride before in NYC and in philly and they can easily run $80 to mainly $100 + for the hour.

We had a very large group last night and while our tour guide nathaniel was great as well as the three actors, we were treated poorly by the two people at the ticket office. A shorter heavy man and a middle aged lady. They were highly unorganized, antagonistic and gave no grace for being a few moments late due to the weather. The actors were great but if you have a larger group I'd suggest using another company.
