City Diner is my husband's favorite breakfast place/diner in the city. I really enjoy it but he goes even more than I do, with other friends. The staff is super friendly, and you get seated immediately, and served very quickly as well. The food is always terrific. My favorite breakfast is the corned beef hash, eggs, hashbrowns and biscuits. The hash is always homemade and so good.My husband's typical meal at City Diner is country fried steak and eggs and the friend he goes with a lot gets the french toast. Everything is always so great. We will go again and again!

This is a quick stop in Virginia and I want to take "City Diner" to New York! Everything was perfect, well except for the Washington Commander decorations. They have a small parking lot that we took advantage of and made our way to the diner. It has a old school vibe to it and I hope they never change. Yellow is the theme and they have classic wooden booths around. They have plenty of condiments on the table as well. The staff are extremely friendly and have a good time here. They sat us and came over for service right away. After a quick wait the food came. I wasn't expecting so much; however, our waitress did warn us. Everything that we had was delicious, even the grits (strongly recommended). I was completely convinced this place, is the original diner in America. I recommend, stopping by, if you're in Virginia.....and extremely hungry, trust me, it's a lot of food.

Quick service and great diner food. Reminds me of the diners from New Jersey. Definitely worth trying.

They had generous portions!Fast service (we were here at 9:30 am on a Thursday). Staff was friendly and seemed to know a lot of patrons. They also have a small sparking area, which is a plus. My boyfriend and I felt welcome :)

Busy busy dinner on Broad street in Richmond that actually has a parking lot so worries about street parking. Be prepared to wait unless you want to sit at the bar like we did you will most likely be seated almost immediately. We noticed they had very fast to go service as well. We ordered steak and eggs and a ham scramble. Steak was seasons with Montreal steak seasoning which is normally totally fine but it was totally covered and just a bit too salty. We also split a Belgium waffle that really hit the spot. Pricing was more than fair and we would definitely go back.

Eh.The food is all right- the club was solid, the reubins a little anaemic, the pancakes saved from rubbery dryness by the blueberries and the massive bottle of fake maple syrup at the table. The waitress seemed more than a bit frazzled and had trouble with our drink order... probably because she couldn't hear it. The noise inside is honestly deafening. The music is too loud and everyone is yelling to compensate. I couldn't hear people sitting next to me and a request to turn the music down at least was refused. I don't think we will go back, there's no point if you want to enjoy a meal with a friend.

Just moved to Richmond and had an errand near there. Stopped in and we were warmly greeted. Our hostess was quick to come over and ask us how we were doing and what we needed as we were new there. The food was great and the price was great on the wallet too. Definitely to go again next time.

We opted for City Diner today since my dining partner wanted breakfast and I wanted lunch.... and Moore Street had 20 people on the sidewalk waiting for a table. City Diner has always been dependable, through ownership changes and Covid, so this was an easy alternative that I was very happy to divert for.The place was full, but we ended up with a table withing minutes. Friendly staff spoke to us from the register and the floor as we walked in. City DFiner is the kind of place where everyone feels perfectly comfortable looking around at the food on other tables and speaking to strangers about their order. Very low key and cordial clientele. Drink order was placed within a minute and brought to us within 3 or 4, and were refilled effortlessly. My companion had not been to City Diner for a long time (I think it was called Karen's the last time she was in) so she wanted a taste of a few things. So eggs, sausage (they offer a choice of large links or patties) and home fries, plus a short stack. Then she spied the biscuits and gravy on the next table and asked for a half order -- she is drawn to biscuits and gravy the way I am to spicy food.I asked for a chef salad, was told there was no one working in the back to prepare it (staffing issue) and I switched to a reuben with fries. The breakfast was spot on -- everything at the right temp and cooked properly. Pancakes were light and fluffy (with decent syrup on the table) and the home fries had large pieces of onion in them, just enough to add a good flavor without overtaking the fried potatoes. The link sausage had a lot of flavor, and was well above expectations for a diner. The sausage gravy seemed to me to be average, but my partner was very happy with it so I will take her opinion over my own. The servings were more than ample -- much of her food was boxed for the trip home. The reuben was excellent. Decent proportions of meat to cheese to thousand island dressing, good bread that didn't collapse under the heat and moisture. The fries were standard Sysco / Ore-ida fare, but they were hot and plentiful. We were in and out in less than an hour, despite a busy floor and kitchen. Total bill including two soft drinks was $33. City Diner is worth stopping at, especially if you are already in the downtown area.

The diner just hasn't been the same since the covid shut downs. Sadly. Was once a favorite stop. It was definitely in the top 3 best breakfast restaurants anywhere in Richmond AND all surrounding counties! While it looks mainly the same it's definitely missing the old vibe that was unmistakable and endearing. I miss the previous staff. I miss the menu. And while it's still good, I miss the GREAT! that it was.
