My daughter never considered CNU as it was simply too far a drive from home (2 hours further than her current school). That was the only reason...more than 6 1/2 hours from where we are in Jersey was just too far. We actually came down to campus last spring for her spring track conference championships. Wifey and I were blown away At this beautiful and immaculately groomed campus. It was like something out of a movie...everything in bloom and not a blade of grass seemed to be out of place. There seemed to be a lot to do around the campus and off campus, a bunch of great places to eat, and it seemed like a pretty safe area. I don't know about their academic offerings, but CNU has an amazingly strong athletic program and the teams seem to solidly support each other. Pretty good deal for in-state tuition too.

Wow. I love this campus. This is my first time here in ten years. I came here today for Advanced Master Gardener Training at Freeman Center. We were located in the theater for training and the Master Gardener used one of the main rooms for our lunch and break periods. The Freeman Center is amazing! Elegant, Clean and very welcoming. I highly recommend this location as a major meeting venue. This center contains a few separate gym areas along with the theater on the first floor and the second floor contains classroom areas where we conducted hands on workshops. We had several Senior attendees that needed assistance getting from their care to the building so CNU and the Lifelong Learning Center coordinated golf carts to transport them and anyone else who needed transportation assistance. They were thoughtful and kind to all of our attendees. The facility manager came by and checked in on conference to make sure everything was going well. The Freeman Center can be rented for private functions. I was told that their is an entertainment schedule just for this building. The students, the staff and other visitors were so kind that I cannot wait for a full campus tour this summer. The campus is so large and it reminds me of a new William and Mary. Very stately but modern with all the bells and whistles. I was excited to see parking near every building and campus police in plain view providing directions and assistance as needed.I am impressed with CNU's campus. I would recommend this school to my nieces and nephews when the time comes for their college tours. So proud of its growth, the course and degree offerings, the friendliness of its staff and I love the location close yet far enough away from the interstate to allow for a quiet environment.

Son and I took a tour of the campus of Christopher Newport University given to prospective students. It was a full three hours of orientation about the school and admission policy by a recent graduate now working to attract new people to attend, and a guided walking tour of the very new campus in Newport News by a student ambassador. The day before we had a similar experience at the College of William & Mary in Williamsburg, VA.It is not common to find a full blown public university springing up practically overnight, so that all the buildings are new or nearly new, and every aspect of contemporary student life is anticipated and planned for in fine detail. Compared to W & M, CNU is like a student resort designed for comfort as well as strong academics. The package is very attractive and appealing. Still it is not for everyone. Our time at school began auspiciously when we ran into President Trimble coming out of the elevator on his way to his office in the striking administrative building, and he was pleased to stop and chat with us about the school and my son's interests. He was very down to earth, and left a positive impression. The tour itself was informative, well planned and executed by the guides. It might have been shorter and more concise if the 20 minutes spent describing all the food options had been pared in half - afterall, this was an institution of higher education, not a cruise ship (Although, maybe it really is, metaphorically). Still CNU was much more than expected going in, and the overall impression was of a new school striving mightily to compare well with it's older siblings. History and tradition are born of time and legend. They can't be grown in a laboratory, but if new custom and practice are allowed to mature under strong leadership and sense of mission, a new story is born that may be equally worthy over time.Christopher Newport University seems to be on the right path.

I'm going to try and keep this review short and simple, because I could easily end up writing a rambling novel if I'm not careful. I got my degree here (double major English Lit. and Communication Studies) and my wife is a Professor here currently, so it's played a pretty huge role in my life, past and present. Suffice to say it's a great place to be, whether as a student or in any other capacity. There's a strong focus on students and learning. The campus itself is beautiful. There are a ton of great little pockets to find like Einstein's cafe. I use the gym here regularly, and it's a great one. I've visited a lot of Universities throughout my travels, but this one is home. In so many ways, big and small, I love it. If you're in academia or just thinking about taking some classes, I'd highly recommend it.

WOW...if I hadn't attended GMU and had the guts to go away to school back in the day, this would've been my go to college. My sister is entering her Junior year and asked my parents and I to help move her into the sorority row just across the street from campus. I was thoroughly impressed with the design of the dorms which are located in the same complex as the sorority and fraternity houses. The house she and 8 other girls are in is set up roommate style with 3 girls to an apartment each with living room, bathroom, and full kitchen..and a shared living area at the entrance for all 3 apartments to use..it's really cool and definitely better than a dorm in my opinion! After the move, my sister took us around campus and it is STUNNING. With only about 5,000 students, the campus is clean, bright, and just feels nice to be at (again, I'm a little jealous over here). We passed the food hall, library, and classrooms..and the newest addition which holds the President's office- everything about this campus is just gorgeous. I can't wait to come visit her when school has started, it seemed like a really great environment and somewhere you'd want to succeed.

I have no idea why the address listed for CNU is under Shoe Lane, but it's definitely on University Place haha.I attended CNU for my 4 years of undergrad, and overall my experience at CNU was very pleasant.I have enjoyed most of my classes and professors, and never had any major issues with anything.Campus itself is lovely. Once all of the construction is done, the campus will be gorgeous! It's completely changed since I first started. Since then, they've knocked down a few buildings and put up twice as many. The new buildings are extravagant. The student union, library, new McMurran Hall are all very nice. Sometimes, I forget I'm on a college campus while in the new buildings. The dorms are state of the art, brand new and very nice. I lived in York River East, Potomac South and James River Hall. I never lived on East Campus, but my friends did, and the apartments were just the same. The campus dining halls could serve better food I suppose, but I'm sure the food is better than some colleges. I really reccomend this school and wish I could have stayed for grad school. Hopefully in the future, they'll offer more graduate level programs, but for now, they are lacking in that area.

Totally amazing campus!! Every building is brand new (no building looks to be over 10 yrs. old). Given that tuition, room and board for a in-state student is only $22k/yr (2013/2014 academic year) you are getting the bang for your buck...However, the admissions standards are pretty high...with median HS GPA of about 3.2The classes are small and everyone from the dining hall manger is very approachable..minutes from the Beach (Va. Beach) and a mid-size city of Norfolk, a lot had to be offered. So if you want a small campus with top notch professors and big campus type of funding, this is your pick!!

If you're looking for a school with good academics, great culture, strong work ethic, and great value then look elsewhere. This university is a scam and only exists because founders and current admin have strong connections to the state government to fund it. Most students do not succeed well or are not set up for success after college. The school highlights it's scholarship program PLP and leadership classes which is a joke of a program especially when the accept everyone who applies. This is Virginia, go to any other of our wonderful universities that are top in the nation and that don't have to skew data to certain regions and criteria to seem better than they really are.

This school is the worst school to every exist. Besides the professors, if you work here I am going to assume you got only a first grade education. There is no interdepartmental communication, so when issues arise, everything is dumped on the student to figure out. - For example, my 3 roommates and I got a cat our sophomore year to live with us in our dorm. We went through all the proper channels and got all of our paperwork approved. Our RA even knew the cat existed and we showed him the paperwork. However, for some reason over Thanksgiving break we all received emails that we got a warning for having "materials for a cat who was not approved to live there" and that if they were not gone by room checks when we got back we would get a violation from the university. That's interesting because the department of disability services should have informed the person in charge of the building we were housed in that we were allowed to have a cat. WRONG. We were told housing knew nothing of our approval for a cat and that we had to email disability services to email housing....what? Why couldn't the person in charge of our housing email disability services as it was their mistake and their job. Well anyway we did so it got sorted out, now despite us getting this figured out. We were still reported to CHECs and we still received violations, upon inquiring with housing further, they just forgot to tell the CHECs office their was no violation...I'm sorry? Is it not your job to do that. I am convinced all these people do is sit on their asses and beg people for more money. It is clear no one at this university cares about the well being of their students just the beauty of the grounds. Everyone knows that if the grounds were not pretty there would nothing blinding people from seeing the truth about this school. That truth is that no one here cares about the students. They are just a bunch of greedy snobs begging for money in their pocket.
