This is a great motel if you want to be right by the beach. It has a porch outside your room to look out onto the shore. There are rooms that don't overlook the beach versus the ones that do.The rooms are clean and minimal. It's perfect for a beach vacation as most of the time we are just in the room to sleep. I love how they provide tables and chairs in your closet so you can bring them out to the porch if you want to play card games or make a kiddies eating area. While it rained about 50% of the time we were here, having a room next to the beach was great to watch the waves and enjoy the sound of the rain. The maid was friendly and attentive. They don't do cleaning services on the weekends so we got an extra set of towels for the weekend. They also have mini fridges, microwaves, and coffee pots.

3 1/2 stars but I rounded up. The room was very clean and bug free, which really are the two most important things. Check in and check out was a breeze. The two things I could do without are the funky smell in the room, and the lack of a Do Not Disturb sign. The funk you really don't notice until you get home and smell your unworn clothes. Just an old, musty smell. But like I said, it's really not noticeable while you're there which is weird. It's a common theme though, it's the same at the old Buccaneer up the road - now called Changing Tides.Secondly, I like staying up all night fishing, so I'm not ready for a fresh towel at 11am. Well, there's no Do Not Disturb sign. The plan was to just say "no thank you" when housekeeping knocked. There was no knock. My car is clearly in my parking spot right in front, but like I said - no knock. I was awoken to the sound of her unlocking my door and pushing it against the chain. That's pretty messed up.The motel is between two enormous beach houses, both of which were party houses during my stay. They were partying 24/7, but that's not Cavalier's fault. The a/c is a window unit but was just fine for me. Can't comment on the WiFi - didn't use it. The pool was open in October which seems unusual to me. But that's a good thing, it was downright hot for October. There's no shortage of towels. I stayed by myself, when I left I had 8 bath towels and 12 wash cloths. So my advice to you - bring a can of Lysol or Febreeze, and wake up early.

We have stayed at the Cavalier Motel twice so far. We found it when we were looking for doggy friendly places to stay. We don't like to leave home without our Chihuahuas and here we don't have to. We like to stay in one of there 2 bedroom units. It's not fancy but is comfy. They have fully equipped kitchens (pots, pans, silverware, plates, microwave, coffee pot, etc.) so we don't have to eat out every meal. They have ocean front rooms but they aren't available to pets. Anyway, it's only a few steps to the ocean. The pools are down for the winter and I wish they had a hot tub and the Wi-fi is pretty sketchy but it's a pretty great place. We'll be back.

Pros: Location. It is right on the beach. The ocean front rooms would have been great, but none were available when I called to book. Maid service was excellent. We had more towels than we could ever need. Plenty of hot water, too. There are restaurants within walking distance.Cons:Wifi was spotty. Seemed to work better at night than in the day.Website pics should be updated. They make it appear that this is a quiet area and the hotel is relatively isolated. It isn't. It's nestled between two large mega rental houses. The hotel is woefully outdated. It's definitely retro and could keep that feel, but update the a/c. Units were LOUD and high on the wall. I'm short and wouldn't have been able to read the display. My husband is 6' and had a hard time. Two chairs in the room would have been nice.Parking. There was a fraternity reunion/gathering of some sort and parking was limited because of their set up and their numbers. Pets are allowed. I have pets and I love them. I don't need to take them on vacation with me, but if I did, I wouldn't leave them in the room barking the entire time I was gone. My suggestion would be to keep pet rooms together so that other areas would be bark free.Check out. None on Saturday due to religious observations. There is someone in the office, so I'm not sure why you can't check out aside from the fact that there is no cleaning either. I was told though, that some people just pay for Saturday and leave. Yeah....no.

This motel is a little outdated, and the inside decor of the oceanfront rooms is a little tacky. However, you open your door and right there's the ocean! Who's really at the ocean for the room?? Staff was very friendly (especially Amy, who was so sweet!) The only problem we encountered was the discovery of a used feminine hygiene product under the dresser. I wish I was freaking kidding, people. My boyfriend told the front desk, who promptly came with gloves and removed it. I guess I expected more from them on this. A discounted stay? A coupon to use on our next visit? A free night? But, all they offered was an apology. Kind of insulting and not very "customer first" after finding a bloody tampon on the floor of your motel room.

I give it a 4 just because it is older and a little outdated. The oceanfront views make up for the outdatedness. We love coming here in the off season for the best rates. The staff here is always nice! If you are looking for a nice place with decent rates, this is a good place! We love that you don't have to climb over a dune, or huge walkway to access the beach.

Bad beds, employee attitudes are even worse except for a few friendly faces. They overcharged me by hundreds of dollars, after weeks I still have not received my money. I've been treated rudely because of their mistake. Wow this is unacceptable.

Great place to stay while in the OBX! This was the 3rd time my children and I visited The Cavalier. My sister and her family have been going there for years. Some guests have been going for 30+ years. It is wonderful for families. It's right on the beach. Great pool. If you want modern accommodations, this is not the place for you. But if you like charm, easy beach access and a safe place to take your family, this is the place for you! I will definitely be visiting them again.
