I had to drive down to Myrtle Beach last week, and I was stopping half way to spend the afteroon with a client in Southern Virginia. I needed to find a little off the beaten track small southern town and b&b to spend the night before I headed further south.I looked on the map - places like Roanoke Rapids and Scotch Gap looked like they had potential. The guide books and web sites were curiously silent on the question of "give me a gorgeous off the beaten track southern town and an old fashioned grand dame B&B near the NC-VA border."I had to use old technology. I had to ask a buddy from NC and he pointed me to Edenton and then I found the Captain's Quarters.Absolutely fantastic. A beautiful town, with a large riverfront on the Albermarle Sound and a small and historic main street and town center. Just about 200 yards outside the historic town center is a residential district with a few old homes that have been made over into B&Bs.I absolutely loved this place. A gorgeous porch, beautiful rooms. I was in the Cutty Sark room, so named on acount of the historic clipper - once the fastest ship on the seas. I had a model of that ship when I was a kid.Lovely bathroom, comfortable bed , delicious breakfast and wi-fi - all for the princely sum of $83 including tax. Absolutely magnificent. The other guests in the B&B were the local tire distributors for Michelin, who were having their regional planning meeting. I was able to tell them about the fine Michelins I have on my Citroen DS as we all sat on the porch, drinking , smoking, having marvellous drunken conversations with complete strangers. I don't think I would do that in a regular hotel in a regular town. ( OK, maybe I would). There is something unique and magical about the old B&Bs in a beautiful southern town. The experience was almost transcendent. This place is about 4 hours from DC and it has nothing that will get it into the Washington Post top day trips list, or the tourist guides or anything like that - it is pure unadulterated southern charm with no artificial ingredients added - and that is all the more reason why you should go there.

My boyfriend and I went here for a weekend getaway. Stayed there for 2 nights. Stayed in the captain of her heart room. It is the largest and thus the priciest room that they have. If you are particular about the size of your bathroom, then this is should be your choice. The bathroom is large with 2 sinks, a jacuzzi ( they didn't do a good job a cleaning the calcium buildup in the jets though ), and a walk in shower. Breakfast is from 7 to 9 I believe and is cooked by the hostess and is truly scrumptious. The inn is located within walking distance of downtown, waterfront, and all the historical sites. So it is conveniently situated. Please be aware that because this is such a small town, restaurants are closed on Sunday's in the downtown area. So for lunch and dinner, you only have two choices that I found. Nothing fancy for lunch ( great food!) and chicken kitchen for dinner. Do not care for the chicken kitchen but was the only thing open till 8.This lovely town definitely deserve the title " the prettiest little town" in nc.

I booked at the very last minute (same day, enroute from Raleigh, NC) and there was a room left for us. My daughter and I loved our room- it was a happy shade of light yellow. There were fresh cookies and lemonade on the table by the check-in deskand the inn keepers were so wonderful and helped us plan some of our trip to the Outer Banks. The house itself is beautiful and has a very welcoming, huge front porch. We enjoyed some evening time out there on the porch swing. Our room was very comfortable- we had a queen and a twin- and the bathroom was huge. The shower had a waterfall head which was awesome!! Breakfast the next morning was fresh- with cherry tomatoes from their plants out front, fresh basil from their herb garden and sausage that was homemade! We had a wonderful stay and will definitely stay again when we return to the area. Thanks for our wonderful stay!!! :)

Beautiful bed and breakfast. Great king sized bed with nice linens and pillows. The adjoining bath was on par for an older home with great shower pressure. Excellent breakfast prepared each day in the dining room. Good parking. Good location. Walkable to downtown waterfront.

The rooms were clean, and the owners were very helpful either stuff to do. Breakfast was good too. They used to run a restaurant so they know what they are doing.

In a beautiful small town with banners every 100 yards asking people to wear their masks, the owners of the Captain's Quarters have apparently declared their business a "mask free zone." During our two-night stay, the owners did not once don a mask...not even when serving the food or checking in guests. It may be a political statement, but it's alarming to those who take the risk of COVID seriously. Nor were the owners accommodating of serving breakfast on the open-air porch rather than the small dining area in close proximity to other diners. Safety aside, the well-located inn is quiet and comfortable. There are no coffee pots in the rooms, but there's a hardware store within a few blocks that sells Mr. Coffees...an investment we weren't counting on.

Great Bed and Breakfast! Don and Diane are great hosts and the breakfast was by far the best food we had all weekend. Great wine selection also! Bed was super comfy and welcome after a weekend of camping on the ground.
