Melissa R. "I've passed this hole in the wall for a while now and have been trying to figure out how pizza/gyros/burgers/pho all fit together and now I know they kind of belong in the same spot. We stopped by in a Sunday before the lunch rush and were the first ones here. After looking at the eclectic variety we ordered Streak & brisket Pho, Garlic cheese bread, lamb gyro, deluxe fries and 6 boneless wings with hot sauce. You know, to get a feel for the variety of options. The Pho was ok, the broth not as flavorful as I had hoped for or found elsewhere on the peninsula but passable for sure. Noodles and meat were good but I can see how some people might be put off by the fatty portions if you don't know that's where some flavor might be.The Garlic bread with cheese was amazing and we took the leftovers home to reheat for later.Husband said the lamb gyro was tasty and the best part of the meal.A fair warning, the deluxe fries were essentially a delicious but dangerous plate of slathered fries, order at your own risk!Service wasn't fastest but very friendly"

Justin V. "On 3/18/23, I dined at New River Taphouse for the first time with a group of friends. We were a party of 9 - we enjoyed excellent food & drink and impeccable service, all within a pleasant establishment. We had reservations and, after waiting for quite a while (I'll discuss later), we were seated. Initial table greet was instant and the drinks we ordered were placed at our table quickly. Our half of the table ordered an appetizer - the Fire Cracker Shrimp. This appetizer is lightly battered & fried shrimp tossed in sweet Thai chili sauce; served with homemade ranch. It was delicious - the batter wasn't too thick and didn't take away from the shrimp, and the Thai chili sauce provided the right amount of heat. It was a fantastic way to whet our appetites. In the meantime, we enjoyed drinks while chatting and catching up. I didn't grab pics of everyone's entrees, but one friend had the Crab Stuffed Rockfish (crab stuffed rockfish with Old Bay hollandaise; served with parmesan risotto & chef's vegetables) and another kept it simple - Fish n Chips (a generous portion of fried cod served with cole slaw, fries & tartar sauce). They both enjoyed their food and, based on what I saw, their entrees looked delectable. I was hungry, so I opted for the Ribeye & Lobster Tail (14oz ribeye paired with a steamed lobster tail; served with asparagus & mashed potatoes). This entree was excellent (not to mention humongous). The only issue I had was with the ribeye - it was too fatty. Out of the 14 oz., I'd say roughly 3-4 oz. of it was fat. I understand ribeyes (yeah, I worked at Outback Steakhouse, haha) are typically fatty (that's why they're so flavorful) but this much fat is technically not servable as the customer gets shortchanged. My meal was excellent, regardless, so this wasn't an issue (it may be if I get another fatty ribeye during future visits). Through no fault of New River's own, they were not able to sit us for a 6pm reservation (we were sat over an hour later). We were a big party and they had one section in mind for us. The problem was that the party currently there decided to stay well after they paid their tab. Ten minutes turned into 20. Twenty minutes turned into 45 - when asked by the staff, their excuse was they wanted to finish one of the NCAA Men's Basketball Tournament games (Arkansas upset defending national champion, and #1 seed, Kansas). But when that game ended, that party continued to sit there, order nothing and chat as if they were in their own dining room. Eventually the New River staff requested they leave because of our reservation. Those d**kheads had the nerve to stare us down as they walked past us. Whatever, you paid your tab and are taking money away from the staff because you're not ordering anything else. Also, regardless of your age and status (they were all over 50 and looked well-to-do), I have no problem knockin' a motherf**ker out for being a jerk, especially when that toxicity is directed at my friends and I. Their sense of entitlement was startling, but not at all surprising. Anyways, get the f**k out. I love the fact that the New River staff looked out for us. This effort obviously carried over to our dining experience, so I have nothing but praise for this establishment. Their food is excellent (keep working on the ribeyes, though!), too. Thank you, New River, for a fantastic first impression. I look forward to many future visits. JV"

The biggest pizza is quite large though, it fed 8 of us and we still had two pieces leftover. The default slices are pretty large, but they will cut them smaller if you ask. They don't serve anything else, but they do have a cooler of drinks that you can purchase from."

Cogans Pizza North

Cogans Pizza North

★★★☆☆ 3.1 (235) • $$

Byron T. "Cogan's Pizza North lured me in with its proximity and a menu boasting a meat-lover's paradise. My sights were set on the "Meatzilla," a carnivorous behemoth promising a symphony of pepperoni, sausage, ham, and bacon. While the aroma upon entering was undeniably enticing, the actual delivery on the pizza front proved somewhat uneven. The crust, unfortunately, lacked the desired airy char and crackle, instead clinging to the palate with a damp texture. The promised avalanche of meat materialized sparsely, leaving vast expanses of cheese-laden dough yearning for their carnivorous companions. Even the pepperoni, usually a reliable hero, seemed to shrink under the spotlight, its once-crisp edges yielding to a softened state. The Kahuna pizza offered a slightly brighter note. Fresh pineapple and salty prosciutto engaged in a tango on the dough, but the choreography was decidedly off-kilter. Some bites had juicy fruit and savory ham, while others were quite bare of tapping. It was a pizza of islands, each harboring its own distinct feast, but lacking the harmonious cohesion that elevates a pizza to greatness. The fried calamari, sadly, followed the pattern of inconsistency. Overcooked and heavily salted, it resembled a forgotten treasure chest at the bottom of the sea, its once-golden rings transformed into brittle, unyielding husks. Even the alfredo sauce, offered as a potential counterpoint, couldn't redeem the situation. Its blandness simply added another layer of disappointment to the already over-seasoned affair.Cogan's Pizza North presented a curious dilemma. The potential for greatness shimmered beneath the surface, evident in the glimpses of fresh ingredients and bold flavors. However, the execution stumbled at the finish line, leaving behind a trail of missed opportunities and flavors that failed to sing in unison. Perhaps it was an off night, a culinary hiccup in the grand scheme of pizza-making.While the convenience factor remains undeniable, and the glimpses of potential linger, Cogan's North falls short of a resounding recommendation. My culinary odyssey continues, in search of a haven where crust reigns supreme, meat lovers find harmonious bounty, and calamari emerges from the fryer a golden, crispy delight. Perhaps, one day, the Meatzilla at Cogan's will truly roar its carnivorous anthem. But for now, the memory remains a cautionary tale of promise unfulfilled."

I got Napoli's Pizza, which was probably the cause of the extra drip action. It has pepperoni, sausage, beef, green pepper, onion, mushrooms, black olives, garlic, and extra cheese. Putting that many toppings on any pizza will bring extra oils & juices. The garlic is really what took this pizza to the next level for me- loved it. The extra cheese really helped this pizza excel when it was time to reheat the leftovers. I wish it was delivered with some crushed red pepper. I know this isn't standard for pizza places to include these days, but it really would have been a great addition to this particular pie.Overall, pretty solid stuff. I got delivery through Postmates which was convenient. I'll definitely keep it in the delivery rotation for pizza night!"

The place is in an old strip of shops, looks run down. The inside is clean and smelled like pizza(mmmm). It was a true dive as far as the decor- run down booths with duct tape, but comfortable. They had a staff issue and only two servers. They had for hire signs on the door. We had a brand new waitress, who was timid but attentive. She didn't introduce herself, but shout out to her for taking the first step.Justin had the French Onion soup, if you follow me here, he loves to taste em all! It was good but not really a traditional FO. It was more like Au Jus for dipping a sandwich, but still had a good flavor. He also had the fried shrimp special, thought for sure it would have come with fries but 12 shrimp is what you got. The waitress didn't know what it can with. He enjoyed them none-the-less.I love chicken parm, that is what I ordered. It was a huge portion over spaghetti, baked and covered in sauce. It was delicious!! I could only eat half. They don't carry dessert any more the waitress said, but... that's ok we were full. In conclusion, if you are looking for fancy- this is not the place, but is if you are hungry and want great tasting food.Good job to the chef!"

Gerald S. "SLICE & PEPSI REVIEWLocated between the two Design & Consign stores on Warwick Boulevard, Newport News, VA, Anna's Pizza pizzeria was in the perfect spot to deal with my hunger pangs after the walkabout in the antique and estate sale emporiums. You could call it the "luck of the draw," but Anna's was owned/operated by a Brooklyn, NY, native who had pizza making in his DNA. I asked for a regular slice of pie with added mushrooms, reheated to well done finish, and a Diet Pepsi. That is exactly what was served me by Martina, the friendly server. The crust was thin with good char on the undercarriage; fresh shrooms and a satisfying 'snap' with each bite. The tomato sauce was slightly sweet and the mozzarella counterpointedly salty, for compelling balanced flavors. This was an excellent reheater. As we cashed out, I complimented the dude at the register, telling him I was from Washington Heights, Manhattan, and his tomato pie tasted like real Big Apple pizza. He smiled proudly, and said, "I'm from Brooklyn..." 'Nuff said! I just shook his hand. "Thank you, brother!""

If you watched The Office (US) and remember Kevin Malone saying "It's like a hot circle of garbage," he was almost definitely talking about this pizza.I ordered through Eat24, and I hoped the order would be better than the other two reviews that are existing on the Yelp website said. I really wanted delivery, and I really wanted something halfway decent, at least Chanello's quality. This wasn't it. I am pretty sure im going to get food poisoning. My order came less than 5 minutes ago, but the woman delivering called twice through the app and both times it started off with something about not giving anyone my credit card number through the Yelp Eat24 app - when I finally got through to an actual person after the automated system called me, she couldn't figure out where my house was, and I had to go stand outside to meet her. She was older and friendly enough but kept assuring me that she did not call me through any app and had no idea what I was talking about even though the app direct dial phone call from her twice came straight to me with both the app talking to me and then her voice. I recognize that older people frequently don't understand how technology works, so that part was fine... But I paid $20 for a pizza, and it is supposed to be a large, and it is Tiny and kind of terrible. The chicken tastes rotten. Like... I would feed this to homeless people, maybe, if they were desperate, but next time I will absolutely order Chanello's or Domino's or Pizza Hut and that's saying something.And... after the tip it was about 23 bucks, and she wasn't even troubled to thank me for the tip even though I had to go find her on my street after she called me twice. Downtown delivery that is ALWAYS quality: Gyro Palace. And they can find you AND thank you for the tip.EDIT: I called back and asked to return the pizza, and they agreed, WITHOUT APOLOGY and WITHOUT ANY SURPRISE. The phone number on the Yelp app is inaccurate, the correct phone number that you need to call to get any sort of service or return on your investment in their food is 757-229-1388. They didn't apologize, and they didn't sound surprised."

Walking in, we were immediately greeted by the hostess and ordered our pizza. The restaurant is truly a well-oiled machine; which is impressive as a newly owned place working through a Saturday lunch rush.
