I wanted some seafood. The Black Pelican sounded like an awesome place to dine in. The waitress took our order right away. We received our appetizers quickly. I had fried Catfish, sweet potato fries, coleslaw, Brussels sprouts, and mixed veggies. The cat fish was huge and moThe food was hot and delicious. My friend ordered a Cobb salad. The restaurant had several other people dining. Easy listening music was playing.

We had a large party of 13 and met here on a Tuesday evening at 5pm. They weren't really busy so we were sat down almost immediately. We were conveniently at the separate room away from others, so this was a plus. We ordered the brie and calamari appetizer. All this was good, however, the brie could have been baked longer, the cheese was not fully melted in the middle. The pita chips were delish though. A bunch of us ordered side salads, and I will say my garden salad with balsamic vinaigrette was wonderful. I ordered the crab cakes and green beans. The crab cakes were good, however, it could have been broiled longer. It was not really hot and still a bit mushy in the center. I guess I could have said well done, but I don't really think I had to, it is customary to have a nice browning on it. Hubby ordered the catfish étouffée. This was a bit different than what usual étouffées are prepared. The sauce was a marinara and it had fried okra in it. Everyone else seemed to have liked their food okay. One thing I was taken aback by, was that since it was a birthday dinner, we had a small birthday cake brought. This was shown to the hostess, however we were never told that there was a $10 charge for this. We wouldn't have cared about this but the bottom line was that when we brought it in, employees saw this, and NO ONE told us this. That is the part I had a problem with. Food was okay. The server did a good job. Probably won't come back to be honest.

I recently had the pleasure of dining at the Black Pelican restaurant, and I must say, it was quite an experience! The restaurant is known for its delectable seafood dishes and charming ambiance. One of the highlights of our evening was the private room called the Captain's room, where we had our party of 10. It provided a cozy and intimate setting for our gathering. The restaurant also boasts a full bar, offering a variety of specialty drinks. However, if you have a specific preference, you can order anything from the bar.I was delighted to discover that the Black Pelican is ranked among the top 10 best seafood restaurants in Norfolk, VA. Their reputation definitely precedes them! And to make our visit even more enjoyable, live music was playing on Saturday evening from6:30-8:30pm, creating a vibrant and lively atmosphere. Our server, Ty, was absolutely wonderful. He provided excellent service and was attentive to our needs. The only downside was that he seemed a bit overwhelmed and could have used some assistance in bringing out the food quicker. Nonetheless, his friendly and professional demeanor added to the overall positive experience. Now let's talk about the food! The menu at the Black Pelican offers a tantalizing array of options. The Moscow Mule, champagne, mom's choco-tini, memorial mule, mermaid punch and Peach Tea were all delightful drink choices. As for the food, it received rave reviews from everyone at our table. The portions were generous, and the flavors were exceptional. The crab bisque, in particular, was a highlight, leaving us craving more. Although the food was fantastic, I must deduct a star from my review due to one minor disappointment. They ran out of bread, which was a bit of a letdown. However, this did not overshadow the overall quality of the dining experience. Among the standout dishes we tried, the Philly Pecan Crusted Mahi and the Scallops St. Jacques was simply outstanding. The Mahi was cooked to perfection and pairedwonderfully with the red wine fig reduction. The Scallops St. Jacques, with its delicate cream sauce and golden puff pastry, left us craving more. The Rack of Ribs was another hit, with its tender, slow-roasted baby back ribs and house BBQ sauce. The smoked gouda mashed potatoes and fresh green bean medley complemented the dish perfectly. For seafood lovers, the Baked Shrimp and Crab is a must-try. The boat of fresh shrimp and jumbo lump crab meat, topped with beurre blanc sauce and baked to perfection, was a true delight. The harvest rice pilaf and fresh green bean medley were lovely accompaniments, although a bit more rice and a thicker cream sauce would have elevated the dish even further.Lastly, the Wanchese Fisherman's Risotto caught our attention as it was featured on Diners, Drive-ins, and Dives. While the combination of scallops, shrimp, jumbo lump crabmeat, and bacon sautéed with tomatoes, sweet corn, and baby spinach sounded promising, the risotto itself lacked a bit of flavor. However, the crispy sweet potato nest added a delightful crunch to the dish.In conclusion, dining at the Black Pelican was a memorable experience. The restaurant's charming atmosphere, impeccable service, and delicious seafood dishes make it a standout choice in Norfolk, VA. Despite the minor hiccups, it receives a solid 4-star rating from me. I highly recommend giving it a try if you're in the area.

Came here for dinner with friends. Their brussel sprouts are my absolute favorite!!! I also tried a new dish they have chicken Florentine that was super yummy & flavorful. The Gouda mashed potatoes were great, the green beans were a little bland but the sauce on the chicken made up for it. This would also be great as a pasta dish! It appeared to only be two servers for the whole dining area so the entrees came out kinda slow. Other than that everything was great.

Black pelican has a great variety of seafood. While I'm not from the area, seafood on pizza is new to me. I did enjoy the crab meat pizza, the vegetables make it work.Fisherman's risotto has a great flavor with a couple different crustaceans! I do wish that more scallops were provided but I feel like we're always thinking that! Service was quick and above and beyond my first night here. I'd like to thank the gentleman if I knew his name late Monday. My second time there was not as good, the service was slow but food still worth it. Apps are tasty but small, plan to get a couple if you're sharing with more than one person! I would recommend the sampler, I'll be getting it next time.

The Black Pelican is a fantastic place to enjoy a great meal. The original is located in Nags Head but this one on the ring road at Greenbrier Mall, certainly gives them a run for their money. They specialize in seafood but I've enjoyed some pretty tasty burgers here as well. The bartenders are actually real bartenders, rather than the typical "beer tenders" that couldn't make a craft cocktail if their life depended upon it. These folks know how to make a great cocktail, they really are mixologists. Check out the Black Pelican in the Greenbrier area, and save yourself the 2 hour ride down to Nags Head.

The grouper was great, however the shrimp was not that great. Definitely frozen and farmed raised. Presentation was nice, and so was the service. The sweet potato was delightful.

I had the fried flounder for lunch today. It was fried & seasoned to perfection! I was pleasantly surprised. It came with a heaping side of fries, cole slaw w/bread & butter. Very filling and reasonably priced. Also, the service was great. I will definitely be back!

This place was a second option after the Olive Garden shut down for some technical reason. And boy am I glad we happened upon it. The ambience was quiet for dinner time and the menu had lots of choices. I got the glass of Sauvignon blanc with the St. Jacques scallops. It was really tasty and rich. The service was okay, our server was nice but quite slow on asking for our orders and for our check. Overall good!
