People here friendly and shop nicely laid out but...Not sure where this fits in in terms of wine shops in Richmond. It's much more expensive and with smaller selection than total wine. Veuve is $71 here vs $55 at total wine. Other wines are similarly marked up. The selection isn't great. There were 4 red Bordeaux in the whole shop which is a bit thin for the most famous wine region in the world. The Bordeaux was all super young 2021,2020, 2018, so none of it is even drinkable. I wonder how many people who have no idea or intention of aging walk in and get a 2021 Bordeaux PnP and have a terrible experience. The experience is also not as knowledgeable as J. Emerson. Emerson is also marked up but the selection is much more curated with more interesting wines and a selection of some older wines. I think this is a place you go if you are on your way to a dinner and don't really know much about wine and want to get something quick and easy. Probably not a bad place to pick up a $15 bottle as the mark up is not painful at that price point.

I loved this wine shop! The artwork was cool, the atmosphere was chill, and the gifts were unique. I purchased some really nice stemless wine glasses made of sturdy plastic for those rosé nights on the deck. The wine prices were ok, some were a little steep- (but I'm used to grocery store prices lol!) but I did get a couple bottles to try! They also have a café and music on some nights! This is a cool hang!

We were next door at the cupcake shop and their name caught my eye as I am always on the hunt for a good local wine shop. Usually they are a hybrid wine shop and cafe, but for now it's just a wine shop. We were greeted by a very friendly guy who also moved to Richmond from the Bay Area! They had a great selection of wines and they also have most of their inventory online so you can order ahead to pickup in store or even get free local delivery! Will definitely be a frequent visitor here.

This place is REALLY great to go with a group of girlfriends or with just one friend! I went here last week to catch up with a long time friend and I seriously will have having happy hours with my friends here, if we're craving for only wine. The place is really relaxing and gives you enough privacy to hear your friends. I got some help from the manager there and he was SUPER helpful and just great at his job. I ended up getting a bottle of white to not only take home, but a bottle to drink. While waiting there, I ordered "Warm bijou with pecans, herbs, olive oil and vanilla honey" as our snack to munch on while drinking. Let's just say that the display of the plate was elegant, but it tasted amazing! I'll be honest and admit that I saw other yelpers post the order and it was what made me help with my decision. The cheese was warm and the honey was sweet and just perfect. (HIGHLY recommend this delicious plate!).Then just when we thought we were done, we ended up getting the oyster mushrooms bruschetta. It was surprisingly really delicious. I highly recommend that dish as well. It didn't even taste like mushroom and the flavor was simple, kicking and amazing with wine. Awesome all around. Coming back for happy hour and trying out more wines! P.s- you get to try any of their feature wine before ordering/purchasing. I will update when that happens! But go and try this place out!!!!

Met a friend last night her for drinks and snacks, and I will definitely be making this a regular spot! Very cute little shop with quite a bit more seating than I was expecting. We each ordered a cheese (which came put together on a plate with pickles, jams and honey), and an appetizer - I got the sub rosa bread (yum!) and she got the olives. Everything was super good! Our server was there if we needed a refill on our wine, but other than that we were left to catch up for as long as we wanted. They were really helpful in giving us suggestions based on what we said we liked, and there was no air of superiority like another certain wine shop....Very pleased with the wine, food and service!

Barrel thief was recommended to me by a friend for a wine tasting I thought it was a great idea to do so we did and loved one of the wines ended up buying a bottle was quoted for a certain price and then when we got the bill it was $10 more we were told there was a recorking feeof five dollars seriously. If we had known that, would have just bought the bottle without having a glass there. I was disappointed in the set up. Not sure I will return!

I want a wine bar near me - Richmond is totally lacking in this department compared to beer. That being said, Barrel Thief is pretty good but I left underwhelmed. Delicious wine available in the cafe but pretty hefty prices - we spent 30 bucks (after tip) on two glasses of wine. I was disappointed in their local selection - none on the menu in the cafe but a few available for purchase in the store. The food smelled divine but we didn't have time to partake. I 100% want to go back and give this place another shot; even if it's for the house wine happy hour special and snacks.

This is one of my favorite spots for snacks and wine. Along with a standard by-the-glass wine menu, this wine bar/store offers a rotating wine focus with special varieties each month or so. If you go to eat, you can pick up to two by-the-glass wines to taste before you commit to buying anything. I think this is a fun way to taste new things and see what you like before you buy a glass. The menu includes cheeses, meats, appetizers, paninis, a few entrees and dessert. I really like the white bean and roasted garlic dip with crostini. It's big, flavorful and elegant, but simple enough to please most eaters. Along with a restaurant, Barrel Thief also has a store portion (in fact, the store is open on Monday, but wine/food service isn't available). There's a good selection of wines, and if you want to drink any in the store, you can get whatever you want and drink it there without a corkage fee. Check the web site calendar for wine tastings, live music and other special events. The atmosphere is modern, simple and dimly lit. Great for good conversation and great wine.

This place is so awesome!! I gave some very loose guidelines and an admittedly conservative budget, and Booth selected six bottles for me. I've been very happy with each so far! All with completely contactless pick up (and they deliver!!). Wine surprise has been the highlight of my quarantine, can't wait to do it again. Thanks again for the great selection!!

Excellent service! Ordered a box of wine to be delivered as a gift with several instructions that were followed precisely. 10/10 would order again.
