5 STARS all the way for this national treasure. I'm not over stating myself. It is a national park and I believe it to be a treasure that we in Hampton Roads are so fortunate to have preserved.A small price get you and your family in. During the off-season they work on the honor system much like our state parks do in an envelope is provided to put in your money. The parking lot is plenty spacious enough for cars, trucks, buses and even RV parking. I've always found the lot to be clean with multi purpose trash cans. One slot is for regular trash the other is for recycling. There are no cans out on the trail so now's the time to throw anything that you have away or hold onto it until you return. There is one small building on the property that houses the educational area which is open during the hours of the part. A volunteer or a Ranger is on hand to answer your questions. This is where group tours begin. The refuge was established June 6, 1938 as a crucial link along the Atlantic flyway, the migration route that takes birds from Summer breeding grounds in the North to Winter feeding grounds & rest.Educational programming is offered by park rangers. Best time to visit is late Fall/Winter when viewing birds. The trails are flat and easy to navigate. Make sure you bring your camera and if you're into birdwatching a spotting scope because there's always something to see or take a photo of.Yes it is a haul out to Sanbridge, but I absolutely recommend this park, especially if you've never been before. Now is the time to consider a trip with all the migration activity happening around the first of December.

Driving through here to get to North Carolina made me appreciate the natural beauty of southern Virginia. A drive I would do again.

Absolutely amazing, so many trails, access to the beach!!! It is imperative to bring water, as there's none available on site. Might want to bring bug repellent, as there are many many insects. No dogs allowed, but this place is incredibly relaxing. Great for bird watching, or meditation! 10/10 would go again.

The key word here is primitive. If you are looking for fancy amenities you need to look elsewhere. However, if you're happy with just you and a trail, and perhaps your bicycle if you brought it, then this is the place for you.
