Saw Arturo Sandoval Arocha play here last Saturday. Was very impressed by such a big musician playing at such a small town theater. The performance was phenomenal. Ushers and staff were helpful and friendly. Intimate theater with snug, old seats. Lighting and sound were good. Support the Arts!!

You've got to support this institution in Hampton VA. It's small but packed with big heart, the staff that work here are friendly, helpful and accommodating. You can feel the community that is Hampton. It is centrally located to a lot of Main Street restaurants and shops. I went here for the first time to watch a Taylor Dayne concert. The venue was perfect - big enough for audience to dance in the aisle while a giant theatre sized screen displays typical concert videos and light display; but smaller than most concert venues meant for intimate setting where you can see the performers on stage without the need for binoculars. There are the orchestra and balcony sections. The foyer of the theatre has a display of performance costumes, a wall of benefactor names and of previous stars that graced the stage. There's a great room where a piano sits across the cash bar. During intermission you can listen to classic songs played by a pianist while you get in a long line to get your drinks and snacks. They serve alcoholic beverages and hot drinks like tea and coffee, reasonably priced. Will definitely come back for more shows and events.

The American Theatre is a beautiful little theater located in the historic Phoebus neighborhood of Hampton. It serves as an arts venue for variety of performances--music, dance, theater, performing arts--and once a year (at least for the last few), it plays host to a group of Tibetan Monks who perform and teach and create elaborate sand mandalas. The building, originally a movie theater/vaudville house, lingered in disrepair until it was rescued and refurbished about 10 years ago.Unfortunately the rest of Phoebus, a neighborhood just as historic as its theater, is still lingering.

The American Theatre is a very nice building. I just saw the Elisa Monte Dance ($35) last week. The building is really being upkeep and during the intermission you may purchase a beverage. The events are reasonably priced and if you arrived early there are a fews shops on the same stretch of road you can browse. Also at the end of the show, you are able to meet the performers if you like. The theater is small, but it ensures you'll have a great view of all the action.

Great venue. Not a bad seat in the house. Have seen several shows - all good. Great little neighborhood to eat and see a show. Good ticket prices.

Went here this afternoon to attend the coastal bluegrass and brew festival. The venue and the show were great. Unfortunately I had to give a low rating due to the poor service. I purchased two beer tickets for seven dollars apiece. After finishing my first beer half way through the show I went to redeem the second ticket. The beer vendors had already left. When I asked an employee what I was supposed to do with my ticket I was completely ignored. I asked a different employee and was told "the beer vendors have already left, I guess you'll know what to do next time." Seriously don't think there will be a next time for me!
