Best donuts in San Diego! But not the croissants. Cookies are delicious too. Friendly staff

My now husband is local to the area and so when we were looking for dessert options for our wedding, we looked into the donuts at VGs. He reached out to them initially via email and they shared with us their event dessert menu and pricing information, which worked perfectly for our budget. On a trip down there before the wedding, we were able to pick up a to go tasting box which helped confirm the selections we were already thinking about going with. It's very much a working bakery and there was no seating inside, but the other baked breads and such they had available caught my eye and I'd be interested in trying those out in the future. I think we had two calls with them between placing our deposit and our wedding, in which we talked about guest count, preferences and dietary restrictions, and how much to order. From what I was able to taste during the reception, everything was good, but the recommended quantity was unfortunately insufficient for our guests, as the dessert bar was gone as quickly as it'd opened up :( In hindsight, we should have used their max numbers, but we were really trying to not have a ton of leftovers since it would have been difficult to take them home with us. Other than that, we were really happy with the service and quality and would return.

Lots of acclaim and hype around this spot, so when we were heading up through Encinitas, we decided to grab donuts to try.- PARKING -Pretty large parking lot, but it does get filled; there's street parking along the adjacent roads as well.- SERVICE/ENVIRONMENT -They have a few tables outside, but the inside is just a narrow walkway for you to look at the display cases and order along the way to the cash register. I think the hype around this shop made me think there would be some specialty donuts, but they were all your typical options. That's not a negative thing though, I love getting the classic glazed or maple bar! We saw they had other sweets like cookies and cakes, but decided to just try donuts for this visit.- FOOD -Glazed Twist: Super light and airy, nice sweetness, can't complain about it at all. I do think a neighborhood spot thats closer to me is a bit cheaper, and honestly is the same quality.Vanilla Buttercream Donut: I personally don't like buttercream in most cases because of the film that gets created in your mouth, and the same happened here. The donut itself was still airy though, so that was good.- OVERALL -I think I was expecting a lot more because of how much people talked about this spot, but its just another donut shop to me. It's still delicious, but I can easily go to a shop that's 5 minutes away versus driving up 40 minutes to Encinitas.

I purchased VG's surfboard cookies for my friend's 'baby on board' themed shower. Although they tasted good, the cookies were sloppily done despite having made the order in advance. On some cookies that I think didn't even make it to the edge. On others they were even on the backside. The line down the middle for the surfboard was never quite down the middle. They were very sad looking and I was very disappointed with how they turned out. Many people were not even able to tell that they were surfboards and it felt like a person could've done these at home themselves better especially for $2 a cookie. Also, the bakery continued to call me about a different order placed by someone else after the event. When I answered the phone and let them know about the apparent confusion, they just hung up on me. Not- "so sorry for bothering you" or "how was your order" or "our mistake"! Or any other expected customer service niceties. That further added to my disappointment in the experience overall.

We love VG's and been going here for years. Yes itd your typical donut shop but everything is fresh and made in store. The weekends can generate quite the line but it worth it. We love all the classic donuts as well as their beautiful seasonal cookies. Such a Cardiff staple

Donut Series, Part 13VG's on Valentine's. It just felt like the right time to give this special place in the heart of many San Diegans a chance to get to know each other better.Putting smiles on the faces of locals since 1969, we love how pillowy soft their donuts are, without the heartbreak of a greasy aftertaste, and light enough to make you interested in a second date. While we're not sure we're lovestruck just yet, we have to admit that we keep glancing at our phones to see if the feelings are mutual. C'mon and ring already, would 'ya!!!! Amazing bakery. I have always been for the donuts but they make extremely good cookies, cakes, and other products. I don't think there's another bakery I would recommend more.VG's is in a great spot super close to the beach, they have outstanding donuts and other menu items, and the staff is always active, friendly, and helpful.They have an outdoor section to enjoy outside which is always nice.Definitely give this place a try if you're in town and try as many things as you can. I'd recommend one of their chocolate bars "The Longjohn", a buttermilk bar, and a frosted decorated sugar cookie.Make sure to bring some cash if you spend less than $10, but you probably will because everything looks so great

The rating is 3.5. My first experience at VG was good. Well staffed and excellent service. I got the cronut and a banana walnut bread. The cronut was quite average. The banana walnut bread was moist and had small bits of walnuts. It didn't seem to have much banana but was sweet.

An absolute Cardiff classic that is unmatched in taste and style! Donuts are fresh, delicious, and never greasy or over fried. The cakes and other pastries and cookies are also great. Great place to grab a dozen decorated cookies for an event or even a gorgeous birthday cake! Don't be deterred by the line -- it's worth it!

8/10. Good donuts and rivals Leucadia for the best donuts in Encinitas. Might be a tad overrated
