we stopped by urban india while walking through the gas lamp looking for dinner. while everything else felt pretty touristy, some indian food sounded amazing. it did not disappoint. service was quick and attentive, and they were playing some fun indian music inside. we got some classics - butter chicken was flavorful and delicious, chicken tikka was juicy, tender, and perfectly seasoned, and the garlic naan was cooked to perfection. i would definitely recommend!

Terrible experience at this joke of an establishment. The owner "Surinder Singh" who was bartending tried to fight me after I contested being charged for a chaser for a shot of alcohol. He definitely doesn't have any bartending experience or knowledge of how to run a bar. Instead of having basic customer service skills he physically pushed me and had his security guard make me leave. So basically if you don't pay up for the hidden charges this sketchy place implements. The owner will try to fight you and have his thugs remove you. If you want to be unexpectedly charged for things and then harrassed and physically assaulted this is the place to go. I'm surprised that they are still in business. This place also had a bad smell which you could tell from the moment you walked in. If there was an option for zero or negative stars that's how I would rate this place.

Great place for lunch if serving the civic duty. Get a good 10-20 minute walk each way to walk off the stiff muscles and joints from all that sitting.I ordered the chicken tikka masala single entee bowl from lunch menu. Service was relatively fast. Food tasted fantastic! Not sure if I was just that hungry or if it was the heightened senses from having good coffee earlier in the day. When the food arrived, the aroma alone had me salivating. Definitely worth a visit.Side note: there is a cash amount and non-cash amount on the check. "Suggested tip" amounts seemed to be off.

We were at Downtown Gaslamp and we found this place called "URBAN INDIA", it was perfect for our craving that day. It was actually our second time trying Indian food. We chose to sit down at their outdoor sitting, I wanted to see how Crazy downtown was at night in this area.Our server came and I had so many questions about their food. We made sure our food has spice, but not too much 'coz my son just started to eat Indian food lately. We ordered food that was recommended by our server and got: *MIXED GRILL*BUTTER CHICKEN *BIRYANI VEGETABLES *NAAN We loved everything that we had, our server listened well to the specific spice level that I wanted 'coz my son can't tolerate too much spicy food, if it was just me I would request a very spicy one.The BUTTER CHICKEN was so delicious, it had a mild spice, it went well with both the rice and the naan. Our BIRYANI vegetables also has a good kick of spice, but it was also so good. Omg the meats on our MIXED GRILL were tender and had so so so much Flavor on each meat We enjoyed what we tried here and we will be back for more to try what they have, next time we will try their Chicken Tika Masala :) Parking was the only issue we encountered , so hard to find one around .

Ok food, but terrible service in nearly empty restaurant and sleepy server is about best way to describe this experience. Craving some Indian food -I was in Gaslamp district and decided Urban India is it! We were the only guests around 6:30PM on a week night. Quickly ordered our food and sat around. It seems Urban India also functions as a bar only at night.Food came in all right but service was sloppy as server kept forgetting the food we ordered so we had to keep reminding him. Food was good but not the best Indian food I had. Pretty average to be blunt. At the end of night server screwed up the final check so I had to correct him as otherwise our dinner would entirely be free...

I ordered take out from here on a Friday evening. Ordering was pretty easy, and the food was ready shortly after I arrived.I ordered the paneer tikka masala with rice and garlic naan. Unfortunately, the tikka masala was watery and lacked any flavor that I've come to love about tikka masala. It reminded me of acidic tomato soup. The rice was decent. The garlic naan had a good texture but didn't have any garlic flavor. Maybe it was an off day for them, but everything felt lackluster. Not sure if I would come back.

A solid meal, not the best Indian I've had but there was nice flavor, good portion and the chicken was tender. Enjoyed the garlic naan as well. Server took our order, got us refills of water and otherwise left us to chat. There is a full bar, and some TVs playing sports games. Good for a casual dinner, or take out - they were turning out those orders!

3.5-3.75 stars-- Got a few things here for lunch the other day:- Butter Chicken: got Mild but was still a little spicy, could tell it was good quality and others in my party liked it, but personally didn't have the buttery butter chicken flavor I was looking for, was more tart/tomatoey than creamy/deep.- Naan - standard Naan- Lamb Rogan Josh - like above, good quality but flavor profile wasn't for me!The service was fine and ambience was a bar-hybrid like, though was fairly empty and quiet on a Saturday at 2.

Urban India is an Indian eatery located in the Gaslamp Quarter of downtown San Diego. I didn't get a chance to dine in here, but got delivery since they were one of the few appealing places delivering that didn't close down by 9 PM, and reviews seemed decent enough.I ordered the butter chicken and a naan. The butter chicken came with rice and had a decent amount of spice, but just very average gravy and chicken quality. Nothing particularly bad and it did the job of filling the stomach, but the recipe didn't stimulate the tastebuds as much as Indian restaurants I ordinarily frequent. The naan was a pretty generous portion and tasted good while it was warm, but became rubbery and unappetizing as it got cold. To be fair, most naan preparations don't taste nearly as good once they get cold. Overall, Urban India was a very middle of the rung and average dining experience, so would probably try someplace else next time if I'm craving Indian food in San Diego.

Arrived to place an order for takeout. Monday night around 7pm. Place was basically deserted. No one at podium to seat folks so walked to bar. 'Bartender' sees me, ignores me and then sits down at bar with his friends. I lean over and ask where I go to place a to go order and he's bugged that he has to get up to take my order. Gives me the bums rush. Hope the food is at least good and will report back on that.
