On 1/10/2024 my wife and I stopped by Sunny's Country Diner for breakfast, The restaurant was locked up tighter than a Chick-fil-A on a Sunday. A sign on the front door confirming the closure offered no explanation. As I walked back to the car a lady came out and explained that the restaurant was under new ownership. They were working on getting it back open. She could not confirm a date. I replied, "I promise to come back and give them a try." Today was the day. The name is now Sunnyside Diner. New name, new owners. Today, I had my "Breakfast Test Meal," ordered as: two eggs sunny side up, crispy bacon, crispy hashbrowns and one biscuit with gravy. The eggs were delivered as ordered. The bacon crispy. The one biscuit was a good-sized biscuit with lots of gravy: instant gravy, but good (Thank You!) Some cafes scrimp on the gravy, applying it like jelly, just enough to cover the biscuit. Not at Sunnyside Diner. It was almost a meal itself. As a matter of fact, try an order of two biscuits and gravy with two sausage patties. That might be perfect. And finally, the hash browns. They didn't make the cut. Not crispy enough. Cooking the perfect hashbrowns crispy, is an art and a science. The diner matches the town of Sperry, laid back, casual ambiance. It is where the locals and working folks eat. The décor, a little worn and it looks like remodeling is still a work in progress. Nothing special. The prices match. The filling two egg breakfast, with hashbrowns, three slices of bacon, and a plate of biscuit and gravy, $8.00. The hashbrowns weren't perfect, but that is a delicious bargain. The service; fast, friendly, adequate. Next time you are on Highway 11 passing through Sperry, pull into Sunnyside Diner and have breakfast.Note: any reviews written before 1/10/2024 are for the old restaurant, previous owners.

For lunch today, The Son and I traveled to Sunnyside Cafe in Sperry. For the TLDR crowd (and you know who you are): Guys ate food. Food Good. For everyone else:This place shows up as Sunny's Diner, but it's changed owners and the name. Kind of a divey sorta place in a strip building that is undergoing some slow reno on the inside, according to the owner, who is a super nice guy that I talked with a bit.We both ordered Chicken Fried Steak because that's my go-to diner fare, especially when looking at a review. I like the common baseline of CFS, mashed potatos and green beans. Service was fast and friendly. When we were there, staff consisted of the owner, his wife and a lady in back doing the cooking.Food arrived pretty quickly, but there was only one other table occupied, so that's expected. I suspect things might take a little longer when business is heavier. In order of tasting:The mashed potatoes were instant, but good, Good texture without the gumminess that instant often gets. Scratch made would have pushed a 3.5 star meal well into the high 4s, but I get that there's issues with hold times, volumes and waste, and the fact is they were pretty good, so I'm not gonna ding the place for that. Just worth mentioning. The green beans.... I seriously think they should make a large bowl a menu option. I mean, give me a large bowl of these beans with some cubed boiled potatos, and I'd be one happy redneck country boy. Slow cooked, lots of flavor and copious amounts of onion and bacon. The CFS.... one of the better CFS I've had in a while. Not the top of the list, but a long way up from the bottom. The meat actually had flavor and was fork tender. The meat didn't shrink back from the coating and the batter itself was very well seasoned, if not maybe just a little too brown, but that's a tiny nit. It was a great effort. The white gravy was the proper consistency and had enough flavor to hold its own against the beefy/savory combo of the CFS.The owner mentioned that the locals tend to prefer the basics in their food without a lot of experimentation and flair, which I find to be a shame, because the guy has a ton of passion for flavor and quality. I hope this diner takes off and gets a set of legs, because I'd like to see what other things he could cook up.The place isn't long on ambience, but the food more than makes up for it.

We have a new restaurant in Sperry!! My wife and I had to give it a chance and I'm glad we did. The restaurant appeared clean with lots of seating. They even have a couple of table that can seat 10-12 people. They have karaoke night advertised, not sure what night The server was friendly and efficient. My wife ordered a BLT with tater tots. I had the Country Boy open face burger covered with fry's and gravy. My wife said her BLT and tots was very good. My Country Boy was also very good. I also payed attention to other customers orders and was impressed with their selections. We will be returning and plan to make this one of our go-to-places.

Food is decent, service is not good. First time we went it two waitresses to get our orders for three meals then two to get it to the table and that was a challenge in itself when they had a total of 5 tables in the place full. Tonight we ordered take out. Drive 15 minutes to get the food for it to be missing side salads, rolls, gravy and salad dressing for the $9 chef salad. So after working in the heat all day we get to run back and grab the rest of our food. By the time he gets back to eat his food from running, his food is stone cold and soggy bc it's steak fingers and French fries that have now sat in a container for an extra 15 minutes. Waste of $50Good timesMake certain you check everything out before you leave if you spend your money here especially if you're from outside of the city limits.
