We hiked the Sweetwater Trail to Wasson Peak this morning. The distance is 9.2 miles and 2300 feet of climbing. I would rate this hike as moderate because the trails are groomed well and most climbs are gradual. The amazing views are endless!! The peak provides a 360 degree view of Tucson and Avra Valley. Do not miss this view!! The parking lot at this trailhead is paved and well maintained. The lot isn't very big so arrive early. I recommend this trail during cooler months because there is no shade. I will be back soon.

Typically less-traveled, the 7.9 mile (round-trip) Sendero Esperanza / Hugh Norris trails path to Wasson Peak is the one my partner and I prefer. If you're unfamiliar with Wasson Peak, it's the highest point in the Tucson Mountains, offering fantastic 360-degree views from the top. It's about a 1600 ft. elevation gain. Bring your hiking poles, plenty of water, and some snacks. One benefit of the Sendero Esperanza route is a good amount of morning shade while climbing up to meet the Hugh Norris. This part of the route is mostly dirt/sand, which is much easier to trek than the loose, rocky King's Canyon approach. Partway up, you'll encounter the remnants of an old mine with long views of the Avra Valley. A little bit further, and you'll have nice views of Picacho Peak to the north. As you continue to climb, you'll transition from the scrub to the desert grassland biome. If you're hiking in late fall or winter, you may be pulling the jacket out of your backpack at this point. The junction with the Hugh Norris Trail is a good place to stop for a snack and see just how far you've come. As you continue to climb, you may notice that you're moving into the chaparral biome as more shrubs start to appear. It can be quite windy in this area. As you near Amole Peak, you'll climb a set of narrow, rocky switchbacks which bring you to the King Canyon Trail junction. Wasson Peak is in sight! Again, if you're hiking in the late fall or winter, be prepared for cold temperatures and a stiff wind! The view from the 4687 ft. summit is gorgeous. You'll see the Santa Catalinas, Rincons, Santa Ritas, and more. Truly breathtaking! Go back the same way or--if you parked at the King Canyon Trailhead--loop back down the rocky King Canyon Trail for different views. Be aware that King Canyon Trail is more heavily traveled. Allow 5 hours round-trip with ample time to snap some photos, snack, and enjoy the view from the summit.

I came here on a Sunday morning for a hike / run, and it was pretty great! I got to the Pima County El Camino del Cerro Trailhead parking lot at around 9AM, and most of the parking was full. I ran a bit and then walked when it became steeper, getting to the top at 10:45AM. The trail was pretty clearly marked at the forks which was much appreciated, and the views were great! The view at the top encompassed all the surrounding mountains and cities below which was a pretty awesome view. The downside was that there were quite a few people at the top, and the trail in general was quite busy. Got back down at 12:15PM, and the parking lot was a bit less full by then. Would recommend!

It's a long hike to Wasson Peak and there is little to no shade. Bring lots of water and sunscreen. It's a good workout but I felt a sense of accomplishment after completing the long hike!
