The staff is pleasant & efficient. In 2019 I brought my diamond engagement ring to check on the prongs. One visibly lost a tip but the other 5 were in good condition. They suggested I have it assessed with their goldsmith and I agreed. When the assessment came back, the goldsmith said the entire head had to be replaced. The price: $600.I took my ring to a private jeweler/gemologist for another assessment. He looked at my ring and said the damaged prong could be repaired and the others were in good condition. The price for the repaired prong; $45.Fast forward 2024. I notice a different prong tip missing, take the same ring in for assessment & am told the tip was missing & another looked "weak".It is sent to the goldsmith and am told the entire head had to be replaced - again. Price: $600.I take the ring to Ambassador and am told repair of the damaged prong & the weak prong would be $60. Total replacement of entire head $140. Work complete in 7 days.I'm not certain as to why the vast difference in cost. Ambassador has a 5 star review and friendly service. I try to bring business to family owned establishments, but I'm not returning to this one.Perhaps Thigpen should consider using a repair service with more reasonable prices. A Google search will reveal the average cost of repair of a prong is $45-$75.

TLDR - Avoid Thigpen Jewelers. My wife and I went to Thigpen Jewelers to inquire if we could replace the diamond in her wedding ring with an upgraded loose diamond we bought. Here was our experience.Walking in, the place felt overly humid and the air stuffy. Overall, just an unwelcoming feeling. Little did we know it wasn't just the HVAC causing environment issues. We were approached by a thin, blonde haired lady in her late 50s - early 60s. She asked what we wanted, if we even knew what the loose stone we had was, and overall just very haughty and talking down as if we were not worthy to be in the store.Once we explained what we wanted to do, she told us it would cost at least $1200, and 8 weeks to get done. We asked for a breakdown in the pricing, and she said that was impossible to give without a jeweler present. We asked when s/he would be available and she said it would be hard to say. Unable to justify your pricing and timelines... hmmmm...So, we went to a competitor; McGuire's Jewelers. They completed the work in 2 weeks at a cost of $280. They even (gasp) provided an itemized invoice of all the costs.Needless to say, Thigpen lost a customer for life. If you are wise, they'd lose you too.

after reading a few reviews, i now understand why i felt so out of place in Thigpen Jewelers. i guess because my mother's engagement ring wasn't a 5 carat diamond, it wasn't worth looking at it, never mind helping me with my issue. which was simply trying to make it smaller so it would fit. it's a real shame that Mari was so rude to me. i hope that, some day, she finds her heart where ever she left it. my mom's ring means more to me than anything else. all it called for was a little compassion. so with this all said, i recommend that anyone with jewelry, that didn't cost a mint, stay away. there are other places out there that will treat you the same as anyone. i found one and i will never go anywhere else again. they helped me with my ring and at a fraction of the cost Mari quoted me. $100 vs $700. plus they charged me $22 to resize it when she had told me they couldn't. thank you for nothing. :(

Bill Thigpen and his staff, including Mari Frye, are great folks to deal with. They are the best jewelers we have known, from San Diego to Boston to Chicago to here. From them, we have purchased jewelry, had jewelry appraised, and just received good old cracker-barrel advice from them. You'll see in the photo that they are open for biz via appointment.

I needed to get an anniversary band soldered to my wife's engagement/wedding bands. The engagement ring has (had, sadly) a very pretty filigree on the outside that we wanted left exposed, so I left the rings with Thigpen's with instructions to solder the loose band to the wedding ring side, leaving the filigree exposed. I know this isn't the traditional way these bands would be connected, but it also isn't that complicated. Well, when the rings came back two weeks later, it was soldered on the wrong side, covering the filigree. They assured me this could be fixed. A few days later, I come in to pick up the rings again and they are now in the correct order, but the exposed filigree has been filled in, barely visible anymore. Presumably this is from where the ring was soldered on the wrong side and removed. They offered to try and fix it again, but I'm not sending my jewelry back to the person that already messed it up twice. I am extremely disappointed in the level of craftsmanship and attention to detail demonstrated by this establishment.

My husband bought my engagement ring from Thigpen's and loved them so much that we went back together to get our wedding bands. My family had two very old rings passed down from great-grandparents, and my husband worked with Thigpen's ring designer to create a custom ring for me- by removing those diamonds and putting them in a new setting, together. They were able to remove the diamonds while keeping them in perfect condition, and created a beautiful engagement ring. Their staff was kind, thoughtful, and receptive to both what we were looking for while being respectful of our budget. They will definitely be our go-to jeweler from now on! Highly recommend!
