Santa Cruz River park is by far the best course to play in Southern Arizona. 18 baskets with short and longs tees. It was one of the first twenty five disc golf courses ever to be built in 1983. Located directly behind the Arizona school for the deaf and blind, and running next to the Santa Cruz River this course is the place to be!

How to get there: From Speedway, turn north on N. Riverview Blvd. (traffic light). It will bend to the right and go all the way until you have to dog leg left. Look for the sign that says "Santa Cruz River Park" on the right. You will also see a Disc Golf Course sign above it.I'm surprised that this disc golf course was not listed in Yelp when the Marana course is. Can't believe that I added it to Yelp and that I'm the first to check in and review. Are there really no disc golfin' Yelpers out there? This review is for those who have never disc golfed before as any one who is a disc golfer already knows about this course and the descriptions of the course can be found on the PDGA (yes, disc golf is a professional sport) or the Disc Golf Course Review (dgcoursereview.com) websites. If you are new to the sport, then I recommend that you do an internet search on "disc golf" and you will find many "how to's" and the rules and online stores. There are many, many tutorials on YouTube.Bottom line: disc golf is fun, cheap (waaaaay cheaper than round-ball golf), takes a lot less time to play, no club house membership fees, no tee times, and is a very forgiving sport in that anyone of any skill level can play, have fun, and is totally accepted on the course and even encouraged. Try it! It is free! And equipment costs are very low. ($45 can get you a driver, mid-range, and a putter.) Great to play in groups. This is an excellent course for beginners and can give advanced players a good enough challenge as there are A & B tee boxes (different distances/challenges). (Good for rollers, too!) The A boxes are all concrete, but only one or two B tee boxes are concrete. There are now nice signs at each tee-off showing the possible basket placements. (Occasionally, they change the location of the basket to make things fun.) This course is an 18 basket course, all dirt, no grass. No real water hazards unless you really throw hard and far and slice it hard into the Santa Cruz wash when playing baskets 5 through 9. And even then, there's no water. Trees are hazards, but none are really too high that you will lose a disc and only very, very occasionally will one get stuck. No snakes, only lizards and gophers. Watch your step--don't twist your ankle stepping into a hole!Layout is not bad. Flight paths can be a little problematic and cross traffic on the south side with baskets #12, #18, #14 & #15. Basket #18 ends close to #1 and the parking lot, so it is circular. There are two putting warm up baskets areas. There are three pavilion picnic shelters. Only a port-a-potty for restroom at the parking lot and by basket #5. Very decent water fountain.Bottom line: easiest course to get to in Tucson and a moderate course, not a long one with elevations like Marana. Excellent place to first try this fun sport.

Amongst my favorite courses in town. I often meet my buddies for a round or two. It's always been a challenging course, but the locals continue to add improvements.

Went to play disc golf for the very first time here last Sunday. Other than playing the game on the Wii with my daughter, I never thought it was an actual competitive sport! Lol. My friend who's a regular player on this course asked me if I'd like to be his partner for a tournament. I thought "why not?". I'm glad I went along cause it was a lot of fun!If you've never tried it, you'll have to try it at least once! If you don't know what disc golf entails, its a game where you have these discs that you must try to get into these metal baskets. I know it sounds weird, but google it. Scoring is like golf. This course has 18 holes (baskets). This particular course is pretty well kept and is adjacent to a softball field as well. The portable pottys are placed in areas very accessible and convenient when your in the middle of the course! They seem to be maintained on a daily basis (every couple of days), so it wasn't dirty...(Believe me, I AM NOT a fan of portable pottys at all, and if I had not been drinking too much water that day, would have avoided it entirely! LOL.)Animals are welcome. Parking is a bit tight if there is a softball game going on. All in all, I'd try it again. It's great exercise, and a great place to enjoy the beautiful weather while having fun too!

Coming from California where the play is much more vertical and Oregon where you tend to be throwing down tight corridors or risk ending up in blackberry bushes, Santa Cruz is a nice and easy, level course to play on. Perfect for beginners because there is near-as-no risk to losing your disc, the course uses good solid baskets. The Tuscon Disc Golf Club (http://www.tucsondiscgolf.com/) has spent money, time and effort this past year to put in new signs at all of the A pads, and are working up to putting in B pad signs within the month or so. Sunday mornings at 8am are the A-pad handicapped league; Wednesdays 8:15am are the B-pad handicapped leagues, and the first Friday night of the month plays host to the random-draw doubles glow-golf matches. The positions of the baskets are decided by the winner of a monthly raffle held by the TDGC, so there's some regular variation throughout the year.If you do throw your disc over the fences along the west side (holes 12-14), don't jump the fences - just walk out and around and ask the people whose yard it landed in.There's usually plenty of parking, except for Sunday mornings when the connected softball field is also in use at the same time as leagues. Just make sure not to park on the fields themselves - people have been ticketed and even towed.

I love this course. One spot, no scary tall grass. Lots of wildlife too! You can see a ground squirrel or two while tossing the discs. The only thing I'd change are the last 6 holes. They are tough to find and kind of in weird spots.

I decided to choose this as my first ever time disc golfing. I must say i lost horribly to my competition, but it was still really fun. It goes to show if even losing is fu n, it must be a fun experience. The course is maintained very well, did not have any issues at any of the 18 holes. I will definitely be back. I just got my first set of discs about 15 min ago, so I encourage everyone to try this sport!
