Robert Berens, MD

This review is regarding the Integrative Pain Center of Dr. Robert J. Berens and the extreme unprofessionalism of Nurse Jennifer. I went in for a lumbar epidural steroid shot today and when I spoke with the receptionist yesterday she informed me that I was to have nothing to eat or drink within 2 hours of my appointment. I had three pretzels at 1000 which was the only thing I had eaten since 2000 the night before. I anticipated sedation because that it what I also get because the procedure causes me to have extreme anxiety. I was escorted into the procedure room by Jennifer and I asked her if I was getting the IV because that was what I wanted. She was going to talk to Dr. Berens because he hadn't ordered it. At the time, he was in with another client. She looked through my records and saw I had eaten something and she said in a snotty tone that "since you ate, you can't have it anyway! You need to be NPO for 8 hours to be sedated. I laid my head down and just waited and each minute that went by my anxiety continued to escalate. When the doctor came in, the nurse said " she has anxiety about this but since she ate she can't be sedated." All Dr. Berens said was " she'll be fine." Thanks doc for telling me how I would feel and handle this, because the shaking I was doing was confusing me! The procedure was painful from start to finish and throughout it I had my hands clenched together. But thanks to Jennifer, she took it upon herself to physical tear my hands apart and force them on the table all while he was injecting the medication into my spine, which happened to be the most painful as it felt like someone poured acid down the center of my leg. It burned from the injection site all the way to my foot. I have had these injections before and I have never experienced a pain like I did today. I received nothing for pain and my feelings were completely discarded. Jennifer's lack of bedside manner and unprofessional attitude is a disgrace to the nursing profession. I have back problems due to my time in military and the deployments to Iraq and Afghanistan. I share my horrible experience with the hope that this care be addressed so no veteran or any of their family members have to go through this. We don't seek help because we want to but rather because we need to in order to be functionally living. After today, I'd rather be in pain than go see this facility and those healthcare providers. If you want results then visit Robert J Berens. He has worked with me for over 3 years and has performed four procedures. I must say his office manner is straight forwarded with no sugar coating. That's that way I like it. He has helped me immensely with my lower back pain that hits a 9 or 10 on the pain scale.

I have had the pleasure of being a patient of Dr. Berens and he is not only helpful and informed, but he has superb technical skills that have allowed me to be almost pain free for a year following my last visit. I am impressed with his caring staff and their facility. I read a negative review and it is obvious that there are more underlying issues with some people that cannot be helped with only physical interventions. This clinic does not have mental health options and some people may be better served with a referral elsewhere.I am quite impressed with Dr. Berens and his staff and I would recommend them to anyone.

Dr Berens is a caring, informative physician who takes the time to explain your condition and the options to treat it. He welcomes questions and carefully explains procedures and what to expect from them. He is skilled at giving injections, explaining what relief I can expect and the timeline for that relief. Very easy to communicate with him.
