At my yearly eye exam, I was told that I had some issues with my right eye and my Optometrist referred me to Retina Associates on North Oracle Road in Tucson. I called for an appointment and was given a date and time 2 weeks away, with Dr. Wong. Walking in, the waiting area is huge. There were 3 other people there. I was checked in and waited about 10 minutes before Jasmine called my name. Jasmine took me to a small room and numbed my eyes for a glaucoma check, then dilated my eyes for the exam. She was very thorough in her questions and was really nice. I was nervous and she understood that and explained everything that she did, and that was going to be done, to me. Once the intake process was completed, she took me to have "pictures" taken of both eyes. I was then directed to another waiting room, in case more "pictures" were needed, and they were needed. I waited less than 5 minutes in that waiting room. After that, I was taken to an examination room. A Resident came in and asked if he could look at my eye. He asked a lot of good questions while checking out my eye. Then Dr. Wong came in. The first thing he did was ask me if I had any questions. He then explained what my condition is. He did an extremely thorough exam, one that I'd never had done before. He showed me the pictures on the monitor and explained them. He acted as if he had all the time I needed. He never rushed me and was very patient with me. At the end, he again asked if I had questions. He answered every question in a way I understood. The whole process took less than 90 minutes. I go back in 6 months for a check up. I have full confidence in Retina Associates and Dr. Wong. If I do end up needing surgery, I'm sure my issue will be corrected by Dr. Wong.

This is a hard no. Prefacing here by saying this was an appointment requested by my optometrist (in Chandler) to establish baseline health of my retinas as I get older. I've had glasses since I was 4 and have seen plenty of ophthalmologists. Had I known what to expect here, I would have pursued his referral in Phoenix. From the jump this place is not patient focused. Long waits on hold for an appointment (where at first, they'll tell you to text for an appointment and when you do, if it's your first they'll tell you that you have to call), packed waiting rooms, impersonal treatment, hours to actually see a physician. Prior to my appointment I called and asked about counteracting drops for the dilation and was told they had them. When I arrived there on my own (as my husband was stuck in Chicago) I was told by the first assistant that no, they don't have them. Why not?? She didn't know but every. single. patient. in the building gets dilated, so why wouldn't they???? The assistants do both intake and diagnostic and there are so many patients that you're treated like garbage. One assistant tried to hold my head closer to the equipment for proper imaging and didn't let go until I asked her to. I'm not a four year old and she never asked me to move closer and she then started shouting what she wanted to do next. I asked her if she was used to shouting at people - she said yes. I understand that some patients here are potentially hard of hearing but there was absolutely no kindness in her approach as well as the others who were 'taking pictures' - which is how they refer to imaging. The only real kindness was from the male assistant who sat me in the exam room prior to the doctor arriving. He was apologetic about the number of people ("yeah, three doctors in today, it's busy", he says) I thanked him for his kindness and told him he'd been the only one to offer it. My appointment time was 2:30 and at 4:00 I was still waiting to see the doctor. Had I not already had eyes dilated, I would have walked out. At 4:15 the doctor arrived, asked a few questions, reviewed the imaging and examined my eyes. Told me my eyes were very healthy and that he'd send a report to my doctor. Two minutes max and he walked out the door right after saying no need to schedule a follow up appointment. If I had needed one I'd have gone elsewhere. Retina Associates is a slow and poorly managed assembly line not about making the patient feel comfortable or actually cared for in any meaningful way.

Going to a specialist for anything can be daunting and nerve wracking, but the staff at Retina Associates at 6130 N. La Cholla blvd suite 230 are in my opinion the most kind and informative team I have come across. Special Thanks to Marisella, Lindsey, Catherine, Allison and Dr. Cameron Javid. You made this experiance today a great one!!

Retina Assoc on Oracle Rd in Oro Valley, who had been treating my 99 year old aunt for years for macular degeneration, convinced her to take a new injection but neglected to tell her that the cost to her was $4000/year (actual billed cost to insurance was $30,000/year). When I spoke to their "Patient Advocate", she said we should have consulted our insurance company... in other words, it was our fault. My aunt cannot afford those treatments and it is inexcusable that RA didn't address it up front. Very, very disappointing. We've lost confidence in RA as they do not have the patients best interests in mind. Seniors beware!!!

I had an urgent need and waited on hold for 20 minutes only to be assured that if I texted I would hear back. The text said I had to call to get an appointment. Waited another 20 minutes and left a detailed message. They called back a day later but I missed the call. I called back and waited another 20 minutes for a live operator who said yes I needed to come in then but me on hold another 30 minutes after which they gave me an appointment the next day with a different doctor than my usual one. Had I not had an urgent need I would have avoided this place forever. Unacceptable.
