What a beautiful spot, not far off Highway 19 but such a transition from flat desert to wooded canyon. We have went twice in past week, each time was great. Heard issues about parking but with so many picnic areas along with parking at trailheads, not sure what the complainers expect. We went early this am (around 730am) and the park was almost empty except for the birds. We hiked a couple of different trails, each one was well marked. If looking for birds, the area around the middle of canyon was abundant with all types of our feathered friends. Dozen of Acorn Woodpeckers posing along with many others. On drive to canyon keep eyes open for Hawks on the poles. All around great spot for hiking, birding and getting some fresh air.

Nice area to stop for a picnic or just to sit down and rest. Beautiful scenery as well. I really enjoy going to Madera and seeing all the wildlife. Make sure to dispose of all food properly not only to keep the area clean but also bears in the area as it is their habitat (I have seen in the canyon before!) Enjoy your day here!

If it appeals to be in nature among birds and native forests, to eat and drink just what you want instead of from a menu, the taking a picnic up in the Canyon may be worth a try!

my first time at Madera Canyon. such a great place! great choices of hiking trails and parking in various locations, but not as much as I would have thought. I'm glad we got there early so that parking wasn't a problem. they do have some bathroom facilities and well marked trails and maps.
