Street view of the Grand Theatre.

I love old buildings. So, much like a moth to flame, I was drawn to the Grand Theatre when I found myself in Douglas, Arizona. The theatre opened in 1919, closed in 1958, and added to the Nation Register of Historic Places in 1976. It is described as a Southwestern Art Deco gem, and I'd have to agree. There are so many great details to be seen here! The neon sign proclaiming "Grand" can be seen anywhere on the block. Since I was there during the day, I don't know if it lights up. Incredibly detailed faces carved into the awning above the marquee. The tile on the ground in front of the ticket booth proudly still proclaims "Grand Theatre."The Grand Theatre is currently under the ownership of a local nonprofit that has taken measures to stabilize the structure and is working to create an open air theatre.Ultimately I'd have loved the opportunity to glimpse inside the Grand Theatre, or even to see some pictures of the inside posted. But getting to check out the facade and learn a bit about it's history was pretty cool. I hope they manage to restore it and keep this charming piece of Douglas' history.
