Ft Huachuca is an amazing Post, for a small town. There are a few places to eat, Starbucks, Dunkin Donuts, a small coffee shop in the library, Popeyes and a few more...the Commissary gives Fry's a run for their money, great prices and fresh sushi made while you wait. They have a nice gym, a library, child care center, school, hospital, churches, etc...There is one draw back, (for some) you have to have a military ID card or CAC to get on the Post and use their facilities.

Years back on one of my 'roadtrip' snake hunts I rented a Grand AM from a rental car place and drover from Cali to Huachuca Mountains near Ft. Huachuca in search of a Arizona Mt. Kingsnake. (It is a beautiful Mountain Kingsnake variant of the species) that is very much a niche species to this Mountain range in the Huachuca. I seriously had my doubts that I would actually find this rare and elusive snake on my first trip from so far away, what were the odds i'd be that fortunate, or lucky to find one? So I first I find the dirt road that goes up Montezuma's Peak elev 7,600' The road going up is hard packed limestone (It was loose and powdery and greenish in color sometimes) The particular species of Arizona Mountain. kingsnake that lives here has this greenish tinge in its white areas of coloration.. (to blend in) So I am driving the white Grand AM on basically a 4x4 road! I am driving it and amazed at the high Desert mountain I am flying up. We get to the top and I find a Arizona alligator lizard, but that's it.. So we drive back down the mountain slower and more cautious as I am looking on the dusty road for possible reptiles on the road.. As we drive along I look over out into the woods and see a 'honey colored' brown bear with straggly long almost blonde hair! I park and get out with my Nikon D200 at the time.. I then walk quietly into the woods trying to get pictures of it as it is ripping apart a log looking for termites I assumed.. All the sudden it stops, looks right at me before I had a chance to photograph it. At this point some sense of 'get the hell out of here' kicked in and I slowly back away to the car... Now I am almost reaching the bottom of the peak/mountain road, and feeling bummed that I did not locate any tri colored Mountain Kingsnake.. Then all the sudden out ahead I see something like a small pencil sized twig not moving at all but in the greenish deep powder of the road ahead.. I think to myself "Is that a snake, a King Snake!" I stop and as I approach this small twig in the powder of the greenish dirt road.. I see there right on the ground by my boots a baby Arizona Huachuca Mountain Kingsnake!!! Whoohoo! I did it! I took photos of it that have long since been lost, since it was probably 20 years back by now.. Anyhow I will never forget Ft. Huachuca and the Huachuca mountains..
