I have been a member of the Airbnb community for over a decade. In all that time I must have booked at least 50 different rooms/apartments. Of those 50 I have only given two negative reviews. This particular review reflects an experience so horrific, that it should be in a category all by itself.First and foremost the building used to be a motel, so in terms of architecture, it is nothing to look at. The rooms are adequate. The most glaring of the missing amenities is the lack of a heater. The room was so cold that even with an extra blanket, wearing wool socks, wearing long johns under my pants, a t-shirt, a long sleeve sweat shirt and a hoodie, I will still cold. It was so miserable that one night I went to my van in the middle of the night so I could sit in the driver's seat and run the heater. I took a reading of the interior of my room with the thermometer I carry in my van. It said the temperature of the room was 52 degrees. Suffice to say I got little sleep. The motel is located in the middle of nowhere. There is only one restaurant in a five-mile radius that I could find even using my GPS. A Denny's. The only way I was able to get any decent food, other than Denny's and a local Circle K, was to cross the border into Mexico. I ate great, but having to drive across the border to keep myself fed is absolutely ridiculous. However, this wasn't even the most horrific part of my trip. Not even close. Before I arrived I got into an accident with a motorcycle on the Mexican side of the border. Thankfully, he wasn't seriously injured. My van's grill popped off as did one of the lights. I didn't believe I had any issues until later.Driving back to the states my truck kept on stalling and neither of the headlights or signal lights was working. I was scared getting stuck in Mexico, but luckily I was able to get to my Airbnb destination in Nogales with little problem. After squaring things away in my room, I went to Denny's for dinner before sundown so as not to be driving without headlights. My truck stalled several times.I got back to my Airbnb and parked in front of my room. But not straight. When I tried to back out to do a better job parking, the van wouldn't start. I called the only place open on Sunday. A mobile mechanic named Carlos who worked for Exodus East. He came over on Monday morning at 9:30 a.m. and started working on my van. About an hour later I had two separate staff members tell me that I had to move my van to another location. I told them both that I would if I could but the van wouldn't turn over so I had to wait until the mechanic fixed it. One of the staff rudely cut me off and told me to "write Airbnb." referring to Kayla, the woman I assume was in charge of guest relations. She wrote me back and said that I had to move the van. She said this after I wrote a two-paragraph explanation of why I couldn't. I told her to please give me some space. That Carlos was just testing the lights to make sure they worked. I didn't hear anything back from her. Everything worked, so I handed Carlos my credit card to pay for the repair. At that moment I received another email from Kayla informing me that I was "still working on my van." I got irritated and told her that I was paying for the repair and to please wait and be patient.Seconds later I get another email from her stating, "It's obvious that you don't fit with this property. You need to leave immediately and ask for a refund for the remainder of your time here." (I was scheduled to check out in two days, a Wednesday)I wrote back and said I refused because I hadn't done anything wrong. I further told her that she could have handled things a lot better from the beginning. Simply by sending one staff member over and ask, "Hello, Mr. Leon you seem to have a problem. Is there anything we can do to help?" If she had done that we wouldn't even be having the conversation. I would up calling Airbnb and explaining the situation, which was a serious one. This happened at 1:30 p.m. on Monday. They came up with a decision the next day, Tuesday at 8:30 a.m. Eighteen hours later. The verdict. I had to leave because I was not allowed to have visitors while staying with this host. I virtually screamed out of frustration. I wrote them back (Airbnb) and asked them to explain how they would have handled the situation? I can't move my van, so I have to have a mechanic come and fix it. How could they call that a "visit?" They made it sound like I had a stranger come over so we could party in my room or something. Absolutely ludicrous. But it gets worst. When I got the phone call that I had to vacate the premises. I was already at my shoot (I am a professional photographer) which was 90 minutes away in Tombstone. I told David, the "Airbnb Ambassador" who called me, that I was in the middle of a shoot and was not going to get back until later that afternoon. He told me that I would be in violation of Airbnb rules if I tried to get back into my room.
