Looking forward to street taco type food. I was hyped up by the talk and reviews... From the outside, 143ST looks like a hole in the wall. Upon entering, the restaurant has a divey feel. We order at the window, pay and tip, find a place to sit and wait for the expected goodness. Disappointment - the food is just okay, kind of bland. Even adding sauces doesn't seem to help. The family with me all start saying the same thing - expressing similar disappointment their food is kind of bland tasting. Sigh!Maybe another time. Tough to judge a business on one visit... next time we're in town, we'll give it another try.

I stopped in late on a Saturday and tried the burrito bowl with chicken. It was delicious. I would eat here more often, but prices have becomes competitive with full service restaurants. My meal with iced tea and tip was $18.00Great service. The attendant was very friendly and the food came out fast. I sat at a front window where I could plug in my phone while eating. The interior colors and decor is top notch.

I went to 143 Street Tacos on the promise of it being #82 on Yelp's Top Tacos list. It was a bit underwhelming to be honest. I was promised some of the best authentic Mexican street tacos - what I got seemed to be more Americanized and more fast food than what I was promised. Don't get me wrong, the service here is great. As soon as we walked in, we were greeted, and immediately given a couple of sample meats to try. Started with the cabeza, which was appropriately seasoned and super tender. The asada was a bit disappointing - I could tell that it wasn't freshly fried, with no charred crispy bits, and it wasn't the highest quality, with a lot of gristle and tougher parts. The Culichi, on the other hand had a very unique smoky, almost approaching burnt flavor. The samples actually did make a difference because we ended up getting the Culichi. There are no prices on the main menu, so you have no idea what many of the items cost. I guess they have a good reason for this - so you aren't shocked by the fact that their taco prices are ~30% more than other taco joints. They also don't make most items fresh to order - instead, they have heating drawers or something similar for some of the appetizer items and they store the meat in metal steamer trays. This does help with wait time - our food came out literally a minute or two after we ordered. But I would definitely prefer to wait a couple of minutes more for fresh food rather than what we received. We got 3 tacos total:Al Pastor Taco, Culichi Taco, Red Chili Beef Taco ($3.50 Each) - The al pastor was acceptable, the fruity flavors were a bit muted against the adobo spices. The meat was of good quality, no gristle or fatty bits from what I could tell, but since it was soaking in a metal vat, the meat was very oily and greasy. The Culichi was good, as mentioned above. The red chili beef was a bit dry on the interior, think of an overcooked pot roast not quite shredded apart. In each taco, they put a literal mountain of meat. There was way too much in each taco, so much that there was meat outside the taco when served and it spilled out each end as I ate. There wasn't enough onion and cilantro topping for the large amount of meat, and there was no pickled onion, radish, lime, or pepper served on the side to help cut through the richness of the meat. It's just not a balanced taco. All tacos were served on small thin flour tortillas. For some reason, the al pastor had double tortillas, but the culichi and red chili beef only had one tortilla. One tortilla isn't strong enough to hold all of the ingredients, especially the meats that are either super oily like the al pastor or watery/stewed like the red chili beef. The single tortilla tacos got soggy and ripped apart as I ate.Bully ($3.50) - The bully is certainly a unique concoction. People here love to bacon wrap things and apparently peppers are no exception. This one is filled with melted cheese as well, making a very decadent snack. The bacon strip wasn't wrapped that well, so it started to fall off as soon as we lifted the bully up. It was crispy and there weren't any soggy rubbery bits. The pepper had a nice bit of spice as I went to the seeded portion but overall was on the sweet end. This thing is super oily - there was at least a couple of tablespoons of grease left over at the bottom of the aluminum foil after eating. I don't think this was made fresh either, since once again, it came out within a minute or two. To be clear, the tacos aren't bad, just not what I was expecting and not freshly made. Maybe this is actually authentic Sonoran style, which I'm not that familiar with. In that case, I guess take my review with a grain of salt.

I absolutely love 143 street tacos. I've been here several times and the tacos are just plain delicious. The salsa bar was recently taken out of self serve and converted to a by request arrangement - which seemed disappointing at first but it works out fine and probably reduces waste so I'm just going to roll with it. The setting and "ambience" of the restaurant is fun and inviting with lots of local lore to browse. Don't skip this taco spot if you are in the area and looking for some really good eats!

Simple in the best way. Great options in food, proper service, and plenty of places to sit. If I lived in the area I would be eating there on the regular.
