As soon as I saw an Instagram post on Trieu Chau, I had it bookmarked. Reason, "Trieu Chau" is the Chinese dialect me and my family speaks, I just had to check it out and the food & Yelp reviews sounds great! I was excited, when I asked my love, my Uber driver to take me here. The bright yellow sign is so welcoming, Old School, mom & pop business been around for 30+ years, spoke to owner Cathy in both Trieu Chau and English and she recommended some dishes that are Trieu Chau style. On Oahu I believe there is one business in Chinatown that serves this style foods. Cathy and her sons run the shop, located in original Chinatown, this is what I learned being a newbie to this area of San Diego. We started off with the combination soup , got the flat rice noodle which comes with duck, pork, chicken, shrimp & meatball. Went with dry style with soup on the side and Chinese breadsticks. I enjoyed eating the noods and toppings then slurping the soup after. Loved sucking the bone marrow and trying to get all the meats and fat, brought back childhood memories when my mom cooked us vegetable pork soup. The broth is so refreshing and flavorful, I wish I can come back for more of this soup! I wish I could try all the dishes but the other half and I can't eat that much. We decided upon the pork chop with rice and veggies, a few of owner's recommendations. The pork is very tender and I loved the pickled veggies, the rice dish also comes with the pork soup which is perfect, more of that yummy soup goodness!! The coconut was a nice after meal treat. As always, our eyes are bigger than our stomach, we couldn't finish the plate and packed it to go to finish later at the hotel. All in all, I am happy I get to visit Trieu Chau Restaurant, there's also Trieu Chau in Santa Ana, not same owners. Can't wait to be back for Trieu Chau foods again, on our next visit to SD!!

We unfortunately really did not like our meal. The salt and pepper shrimp tasted incredibly stale as it was somehow not crisp at all but the biggest issue was that as soon as the plate was set on the table - I got a big whiff of a bad fishy smell. On top of that, none of the shrimps were de-veined. The bone soup that looked and sounded so good in reviews was not that great. The meat on the bone was quite tough and chewy. The broth didn't even taste like a yummy bone broth, it tasted so strongly of nearly burnt garlic. The hainan chicken was the least bad thing we ordered but it definitely was not a very good hainan chicken. I wanted to love this place so much but the food was really disappointing.

I'm surprised I haven't reviewed yet and I've been coming here for well over 15 years. A true definition of hole in the wall hidden gem mom and pop shop. They have a variety of Cambodian Chinese foods. I never venture too far and only come here really for 2 specific dishes although I've tried plenty of other dishes here. They're most known for their lard nah which is a pan fried noodle dish with protein of choice in gravy. I get either that or their dry combination noodle with big noodles and soup on the side which is I believe basically the Phnom Penh dry noodles. This is a dry noodle dish with ground pork or chicken, chicken, shrimp and fishballs. I remember the portions being bigger and them adding more proteins as well such as liver and roasted duck but I noticed they took it out awhile ago. They are also well known for this piping hot bone soup which is simple and flavorful. They are a bit on the pricier side for being such a run down place so the menu prices are not accurate. Each dish is about $16-17 now when it used to be about $12.

This place has one of the best if not the best home style dishes and flavors you could ask for! The unique style and delicious taste is often replicated but never duplicated. Service is prompt and the restaurant has that feel like you've been here since you're a kid. Everyone loves the home vibe here!

This is a family restaurant in the heart of city heights. I ordered the won ton combination soup noodles with an order of their house made bread. The bread was buttery and crispy. They cut it for you so you can dip it in a sauce or your soup. The wonton noodles have so much flavor and ingredients. I would come again for this!

Hole in the wall- mom and pop type restaurant in a more unpleasant area of SD. Pretty small inside. I came on a cold Sunday morning and was a bit surprised to see the restaurant empty. Service was friendly and welcoming.Food was just OK. Portions seemed small, but as we made our way through each bite, I believe the portion is just right. Flavors were on sweeter side, especially their sate chili. It was very different from the ones I've tried. Their pickled jalapeño had a great kick! There were other condiments and sauces on the table as well. We ordered one dried combo #1, one beef peanut noodle, and one order of Chinese donut. Both noodles, with a side of broth and bone beef. The chinese donut was nice and warm! Not too oily either. We enjoyed dipping in broth. Our total came out to $30 before tip, which is not bad. They also sold other random snacks and fruits at the front of restaurant. A lot of interesting items! Overall, I expected better, but it wasn't terrible. Solid 3.5 for me.

TL;DR: Chinese-Viet dishes with true homecooked flavor - some of the best bone broth soup I've ever had! Came hungry on a Monday around dinner time and were quickly seated as we opted for an early dinner and there were no other customers yetOrdered:- Salt & Pepper Calamari (3/5): The breading wasn't the best but the calamari tasted fresh and really enjoyed the garlic/spice mixture- Combo (#1) soup with flat egg noodle (4/5): Really good broth. The meats were good but none of them really stood out- Bone broth large (5/5 - MVP): Get it. Opt for the large - you won't regret it. Worst case you bring it home (like I did) and use it as a base for something else. Just get it- Chinese Broccoli with Oyster sauce (3.5/5): Overall good but again, not special. Asked for sauce on the side (typical experience is usually salty) but didn't get it (see pic) :/ Next time I'm back, I'll 100% be getting the combo #1 again but the dry version. The owner was kind enough to give us an extra bowl of bone broth - she said it was because Mondays were slower but truthfully it's probably because we ate so much! We'll be back soon :)Cheers, Trieu Chau!

A hole in the wall in the heart of the Asian district. Definitely has good Trieu chau noodle soups with the bone marrow. The star of the show is actually their fresh made Chinese donuts that pairs perfectly for dipping the soup. The chicken wings was a bit greasy for me but flavors were on point. Definitely a good stop if you are in San Diego and craving noodle soup.
