My family and I came to The Buther Shop tonight to celebrate my brother's birthday. Now I hadn't been here in nineteen years, but this is where my brother really wanted to go. Upon walking in, you almost go back in time as you are presented with a decor that is reminiscent of the old mafia days. Red leather booths, dark wood walls, and brown carpet. It even had a vintage smell in the air.We were greeted by the hostess and were seated within minutes of walking in the door. After being seated, we were greeted by our server roughly ten minutes later. We ordered some waters and drinks and while we waited for those to arrive, I looked over the menu. Upon opening the menu, I took notice that the prices they were charging for their steaks were on par with some of the most high end steak houses in San Dieho. We are talking $95 for a porterhouse, $75 for a 16oz prime rib, and $220 for a 48oz tomahawk steak. With prices like these, I was expected prime cuts and an absolutely superb steak. My family and I placed our orders, which were the porterhouse, the salmon, and lamb chops. The salmon and lamb chops came with sautéed vegetables and mashed potatoes. After placing our orders, we sat there and enjoyed our drinks until they ran dry. We didn't get refills until our food had arrived later, and even after the food arrived and we were topped off on our drink, we didn't see our server until it was time for the bill. Service over all for our table was a 2 out of 5 stars. The food arrived roughly fifteen - twenty minutes after ordering, and I have to say...it was a letdown from the moment they placed the plate in front of me. I ordered the lamb chops, and the overall presentation was that everything was just thrown onto a plate. A big dollop of mashed potatoes, the lamb chops thrown on top, and the vegetables. The potatoes were okay, but the vegteables....I don't know where to begin. For one they were overcooked which you could tell by the fact that what I assume was cauliflower was gray, they were cold and overall tasted as though they were yesterday's vegetables that they heated back up tonight. The lambchops were cooked to the temperature that I requested but lacked flavor. Needed salt, and the chimichurri on top has zero flavor . The overall reaction around the table was pretty much the same. The salmon dish lacked flavor and had the same old tasting vegetables and the $95 porterhouse just mediocre and definitely not a prime cut. Overall, it was a very disappointing dinner. For the prices that The Butcher Shop is charging, I was expecting service to be on point, but more so, the food to be quality. It just felt like I went to a local diner and ate. Can't recommend this place to anyone out there, and I personally don't see myself coming back. For the price, you're better off going to other notable steakhouses in San Diego.

I've been dining at The Butcher Shop for almost 20 years, though my recent visit was the first in about 2 years, with the new ownership...Not Changed: -Same upscale vintage, Americana decor, with red leather booths, white linen table clothes, and elegant decor. -Same great food overall-Friendly service all around from the hostess to the waitress and bussers. -The Garlic Bread is still amazing, and FREE! The Garlic Spread is YUM!Changed:-Prices have skyrocketed, as everywhere, but I knew that before hand cause I'm a OCD about looking at menus in advance(see my 2009 review!) -Soup or Salad is no longer included with the steaks...it's $8 extra now. -Choice of side no longer included with the steaks-But other entrees such as the Prime Rib, Salmon, Porkchops, and Lambchops do come with sides.-The new female waitstaff uniforms are "interesting". If your female partner is the "jealous" type, you may want to another dining establishment. $16 Chargrilled Caesar Salad...lovely! Deconstructed and nicely charred, the fresh crouton slices were great too. Big enough for 2 people. $95 Porterhouse 28oz...perfectly cooked to Medium, with a nice sear and char taste...tender, juicy, beefy, and delicious! The wife and I planned on taking some home...but we ended up devouring the entire thing. Better while it's fresh? We also paid $3 for a 3 sauce sampler...$12 Grilled Asparagus...Good! $12 Loaded Baked Potato...Good!$10 House Red Wine Glass...Good enough for unclassy guy like me!$FREE Cheesecake slice dessert...cause it was my birthday!Despite the much higher prices, I'd still rather go here than one of the corporate chains like Flemings, Lou & Mickey's, or Morton's. I'll be back here eventually on another special occasion.

Everything was amazing here!!!!! (except one thing that I'll explain) I'm very surprised by the poor reviews here. We rarely ever get our steak/meat the way we ordered it, but tonight they cooked it perfectly. We ordered two sirloins which were again cooked perfectly (medium rare and medium). The Brussels sprouts were roasted very nicely & the flavor of the buttermilk chive whipped potatoes were great. One of the only complaints we had during our experience was the temperature of our sides dishes and sauce when it came out. It seemed to have been sitting out too long. The owner gave us a free dessert for that and the cheesecake was tasty as well. Our server was very attentive, friendly and helpful. The ambiance on the inside is very old timey, but it's classic. The outside definitely needs an upgrade and you would have no idea the kind of place it is by just passing by. We will be back!

We used to come here pretty often. Loved the vintage ambiance and service was always wonderful. It had been a couple years since we had been (got married, had a baby... all the crazy life things!) we decided to pop in for dinner! First thing... the prices are way higher than they used to be (like everything else ... so not too surprised). All the steaks are Ala cart now... which we didn't realize until we got everything. Our server was a GEM! She was so lovely. I do have to say though that this day an age deciding to have your servers wear very short red skirts and tight black tops was a little... concerning?? Cheapened the whole vibe... felt like a Hooters situation. I felt bad for them. Needless to say I think we are sadly going to skip the butcher shop from here on out.

Don't spend your money here unless you like severely undercooked steak, rubbery overcooked lobster, flavorless "seasonal veggies", chewy risotto, and dry salmon. Worst $300 we've ever spent. I would have taken pictures but it was so god damn dark in there that I wouldn't have been able to do so without using flash, and I wasn't about to draw that kind of attention to myself. Also, this isn't Hooters, folks - the short skirts and low cut shirts don't belong on your waitresses in a so-called "high quality steakhouse". What even is the angle there? Apparently this is a nod to uniforms of decades past - and that's where these should stay - IN THE PAST. My dad's birthday dinner was completely ruined. He lamented that before Covid, this place used to be really good, so he was excited only to be completely let down. My husband and I felt terrible, and we were upset ourselves because the food was so ass. I couldn't even finish my dinner. Total joke, don't recommend, and we will never go back. Spend your money at Eddie V's or Ruth's Chris and get substantially better food for the prices this terrible place is charging.

The food was good, service was friendly and attentive. However, my quip with this place is the uniform that the waitresses (all appear to be females in early-mid 20s) wear. Imagine a steakhouse crossed with a Hooters and this is it. Extremely short skirts and low cut v neck shirts? I didn't expect to see so much "cheek" everywhere while eating an expensive meal with my date. For the price point of this place it makes no sense really, so think twice if you're thinking of coming here for an intimate date night as I could see it being an awkward situation for some.BUT, our waitress was very sweet and did a great job so I'm only taking a star off for the makes-no-sense ambiance. The mai tai that I ordered was delicious and strong, I wanted to get another one but didn't want to be stumbling out. Haha.Overall, this place is good but could market itself more clearly as either a risque, man-driven steakhouse or an intimate, classy steakhouse. As it is not possible to be both IMO.

We are visiting and decided to try the butcher shop for our first night in town. We started with a cocktail at the bar and were served two amazing cocktails by Eric. Their espresso martini was by far the best I have ever had and my husbands Manhattan was outstanding. We were then seated where we were taken care of by the amazing Jacqueline. Jacqueline went above and beyond to make our dining experience by far one of the best we have ever had. She made some wonderful suggestions from their menu of some of her favorite items for us to try.We started with an amazing shrimp cocktail and their yummy garlic bread (the garlic spread is amazing!). My husband had their aged New York strip special and I had their salmon. We both agree both were by far THE best steak and salmon we have ever had. The steak was cooked perfectly and the salmon and risotto were amazing and the cream sauce was outstanding. The Resturant's ambience was amazing as well from the red booths to the mobster photos above the bar (our personal favorite). The theme was a traditional classy chop house and the ambiance of a New York steak house (speaking from experience). When we are back in town we will be coming back for sure to the butcher shop and will be recommending them to anyone we know when they come down to San Diego. Thank you to Jacqueline and Eric and the rest of the staff at the Butcher Shop for a wonderful dining. experience
