In 1946 the incomparable Lady Day record the jazz tune, "Sunny Side of The Street." She sings, "Grab your coat and get your hat. Leave your worry on the doorstep. Just direct your feet. To the sunny side of the street." I couldn't have said it any better Ms. Holiday. Whether you find yourself with feet draggin or a hoppin an a skippin take a chance and step on through the great big birch door at the Birch Door Cafe. Soak in the jazz classics like they're coming from the original vinyl. Transport back in time to your grandparents. Take a seat by the window and soak in the spring rays that WA so greedily clings to. Expect smiles and laughter amongst the patrons and staff on a mellow morning. You won't be sitting for long before your first cup of brown nectar is poured, and don't for get the fresh squeezed OJ. Now you're getting the picture. The eggs Benedict is creamy. The pancakes are larger than expected, and the potatoes are stacked high like the Cascades. If that's not enough though, and you need your ModSocks blown completely off, order the Apple Pancake. It's fluffy, custardy, and sent from the Bellingham ferries astride a corgi directly to your woody table. So fly on in during a weekday and sit by the sun soaked windows. Listen to the local line crew talk about installs and outages, and hear the wait staff joke with one another. Or, best of all, just focus on the one you love and take in the wonderful meal before you begin your morning gear up. Quid Pro Quo though...The weekends are buszzzzzy so expect a 20 to 40 minute wait if you arrive on a Saturday or Sunday at 9-11am. There is no making reservations period...Sometimes when they bring the syrup it's been freshly rinsed off and placed in a small custard cup.(Thx) But, the water gathers at the bottom and if you're not careful the water will drip on your food while you pour your syrup. Breakfast foul! C'est la vie mon amie. That is life my friends. That is life.

This is the place to be for a wonderful breakfast/brunch experience. No it is not a typical diner, instead you get treated to a homely yet elevated experience for some really good food. Although the prices are a little on the higher end, there really is nothing to complain about. Service was top notch, I think I had maybe 8 cups of coffee and they wouldn't stop! 100% recommend the blueberry lemon French toast special. Knock your socks right off and maybe stay off the sugars for the next week but boy was it a treat! Will definitely be back for those in the near future!

One of my favorite brunch spots in Bellingham. The quality ingredients for their dishes make all the difference in the world in flavor. The big apple pancake is huge and delicious. The omelette are baked and one of the best omelettes Ive ever had.

Stopped here before heading to the airport and was greeted with a warm welcome. This restaurant makes you feel right at home and the food has a home taste to it. The portions are also really generous. I had the biscuit and gravy and it was massive. It came with a side of eggs any style as well. The biscuit was nice, warm, and fluffy inside and the gravy was flavorful. The gravy had chunks of yummy sausage as well. Highly recommend coming to this place.

There's often a wait, a good sign. Putting our names in on a Sunday at 10 a.m., the wait was only 20 minutes for a party of four. Service was efficient and friendly. The menu is large and has everything from sweet to savory. The chocolate chip pancakes were good as was the German pancake and the eggs Benedict. The coffee is unlimited. The chai tasted okay, but came out lukewarm. Other than that, it was a great breakfast spot!

Memorial Day Weekend = Lots of people - to be expected for sure. The blueberry lemon cobbler French toast was very good. My husband thought the baked ham cheddar omelette was good but a little monotone. Our daughter loved the kids chocolate chip pancakes! Plenty of parking and friendly service!

We waited for about 40 minutes on a Sunday morning. It was conveniently located near the main road. The restaurant ambiance was made to look like a cozy home with antiques. It was quaint! Sadly, our meals weren't very memorable. The omelette was good in size but not very tasty. Overall, it was good portions and the service was great! Really can't go wrong with breakfast.

We came to the Birch Door as a party of 8 on a busy Saturday morning. We had to wait 1.5 hours for a table, but that was due to the size of our group. We wish they did reservations! I ordered the Northwestern Benedict for me with a Pomegranate Mimosa. I love this Benedict-they nailed the hollandaise, and the smoked salmon that they use is delicious. The pomegranate mimosa was nice and tart too! This was a solid breakfast. We were there for a birthday, and they were nice enough to bring out a sundae for our friend. It was very sweet. I love the Birch Door! They also have some toys, coffee and locally made goods for sale.

For years I have read the rave reviews written by legions of happy diners. Today I decided I needed to check it for myself.Upon entering, I was struck by the decor and ambience. What an unusually nice and comfortable setting. Then came the nice warm greeting, accompanied by a cheerful, friendly smile.Quickly seated at a nice table for one, my server promptly appeared. Wow, another helping of "warm, cheerful, friendly" greeting. And, he thoughtfully brought the menu, water, napkins and the necessary tools.I ordered and then began looking around, enjoying the pleasant, relaxed atmosphere. This establishment does an exceptional job of creating a very comfortable and pleasing experience. The tables were thoughtfully placed a little farther apart than normally seen in restaurants. Nice touch. The wait people (and there were many) ALL were smiling and nicely joking with their customers. Even when they walked away, returning to the kitchen, they were smiling. I don't know, but it appeared to me that they all really enjoyed working here.In all, this meal was literally one of the most pleasant and satisfying dining experiences I have had in the last 10 years... really!I would, however, offer a few small suggestions:Syrup -The syrup quality should be upgraded. The presently syrup does not do justice, nor support the superior quality of the food (ie.. pancakes, etc)Presentation -This restaurant space is obviously the product of many hours of planning and design. The owners are aware of visual impact. I received my omelet. It looked great and was of a very generous size. But when it arrived, it was alone on a plain white plate. It looked delicious, but lonely, plain, desolate. The food is displayed on a plain white plate with NOTHING else. Many years ago, a fellow Yelper observed this same thing. He did such a fine job describing this, I will now offer his exact quote: "I do hope the owners take this to heart and try to make the food look like a came from a chef and not a cafeteria".My thoughts exactly.I am sorry I took so long to enjoy this experience. This a top notch, unusual restaurant. Go and enjoy!
