This Tampa couple walked into the packed eaterie on a soulful Sunday; the greens were delish, the chits & hogmaws were delectable & the mac n cheese & cornbread were on point. My husband ordered smothered pork chops, rice & black eyed peas, mac n cheese & cornbread. His statement was "now We have a reason to cross that bridge more often.

1 Star - If zero were an option that would have been the choice. I hate to say it but I would never go back. I arrived to try this truck for the first time and they were late to the event. Then when it was time to order they were out of most of the listed menu items. I placed my order and apparently they ran out of one item but neglected to inform me so they just omitted it. Luckily I checked my order before I left and was able to get another side since I had already paid for two. Despite all of the logistical and customer service issues at the truck, I was hoping the food would be good. My hoping was in vain because it was not! The food did not taste homemade or fresh. The items we received seemed to be mostly processed and reheated. The pork chop I ordered was fried fresh but the gravy was definitely packaged. Needless to say, I will be taking my business elsewhere in the future.

BEST SOUTHERN SOUL FOOD IN TAMPA BAY Heavy's Restaurant is on 22nd Street and 9 th Avenue South in St Petersburg , Florida. They cook up the very best southern style soul food in Tampa Bay . Best collard greens in Florida ! Large portions of fried chicken , pork chops , green beans , black eyed peas , lima beans , mashed potatoes, ox tail , rice , chitins and so much more . Plus homemade lemon cake and bread pudding . It's all so delicious and reasonably priced ( probably the best food bargain in all of Tampa Bay ) . Parking located behind the restaurant. Their secret ... the two ladies who oversee everything are so sweet and friendly and they take their cooking very seriously! Large portions and all perfectly flavored with the secret southern accents ! This place is the real deal .... well worth the drive ! If you want the best southern soul food in Florida - all cooked slow and tasty - you must get out to Heavy's Restaurant in St Petersburg ! PS - It's located just 5 minutes from the Ray's baseball stadium and is a PERFECT place to stop and get a delicious pre-game meal !!

Went over to have dinner with some friends at their condo in Gulfport last night. Instead of cooking, they mentioned there was a food truck parked out front where we could order dinner. What an amazing treat! We arrived near the time they were closing up, so they were out of a few items. However, what they did have was awesome. The orders come with two sides, so I asked the gentleman working the window which two were his favorite. Without skipping a beat, he said "collard greens and mac n cheese". Well, of course those were the sides I ended up ordering! I honestly think that any one of the sides would have been great based on how delicious everything was.The folks running the truck were all super friendly and you could tell they were very proud of their food.Right off the bat, first thing I noticed was how heavy the bag of food was. They do not skimp on portions! In fact, the styrofoam (I know, styrofoam, boo!) containers couldn't even close. One meal is enough for two!I ordered the fried fish which were giant fillets of basa dusted in cornmeal and crispy fried. Not greasy or dry at all. Perfect fried fish. Even my husband who "isn't a fish guy" thought they were the bomb. The mac and cheese was pure heaven and my collards even had a big meaty pork bone in them, confirming the authenticity of the recipe. My husband got the smothered chicken which was delicious. It was so dark out that he couldn't see what he was eating unfortunately, but that didn't stop him from chowing down. I even grabbed a bite or two.Our friends had the pulled pork: also amazeballs. And, the only side that wasn't collard greens or mac was the green beans. They reminded me of my ole country aunt's cooked all day beans. The best! Can't wait to have anther run in with Heavy's!My only regret is that we were eating waterside in the dark, so I couldn't get a beautiful picture of this must have food.

How bad I wanted to love this food. It smelled so good walking into the kitchen area and the front lady was extremely nice. However the food is lacking in so many ways. I got the soul food sampler but there was no oxtail or turkey wings so I was allowed to sub baked chicken and the fried chicken. The fried chicken is pretty much made to order so points for it being hot and fresh. But sadly the fried chicken tasted like just grease. Very little seasoning although very crunchy. The meatloaf was salty and also seemed to be a few days old. The baked beans almost tasted like dessert with the amount of brown sugar put in them. The collard greens and green beans tasted the exact same, salty and that's it. Greens had no ham or turkey, atleast from what I received. The potato salad was alittle tasty but all in all mediocre. The only two things that were good was the drink Michelle Obama which is a koolaid and lemonade mixture, and the sweet potato bread which was less sugary than the beans. Everything was either too salty or too sweet. As for the sit down area, although they tried their best as it's alittle cozy with black history all over the walls, the smell of wet mildew was so pungent I really would never sit down to eat there. I may try one more time on a Sunday when they have their full menu, but all in all this is not that great soul food place.

Heavy's is one of the better food trucks in both quality and quantity. I haven't always considered myself a BBQ enthusiast, and probably still don't, but I'm slowly becoming a convert thanks to incredible dishes at great BBQ places like Jazzy's & Heavy's. And do show up hungry - Heavy's portions are gigantic! My co-worker has previously enjoyed Heavy's food truck in St Pete, and highly recommended them. Although I also *like* them on Facebook, she notices when their schedule occasionally puts their food truck in Clearwater, and she alerts me so we can go. And now that we've been a few times, I fully understand the draw. Meals are HUGE, and delicious. Their collard greens are my favorite, but I also love their macaroni & cheese. I usually order pulled pork because it's so perfectly tender. It's also drizzled with their sweet BBQ sauce that I surprisingly love. My KC friend tells me this is Kansas City style BBQ. Whatever *style* it is, it's outstanding. And sometimes Heavy's has banana pudding, which is equally fabulous.

The friendliest crew!!! They are always having a good time and joking with customers. The wait time is never long and they've only run out of an item once, and I arrived a few min before close. The food tastes just like the family reunion and these guys really know how to manage things while keeping the Bay smiling. Great job, Heavy's!Honorable mentions: Oxtails!!! Tips: Ask for a side of sauce with your order. It doesn't matter what you order....ask for it lol

We are new to the area so we went to Yelp to find some good home cookin on a Sunday. During our move, we've eaten out ALOT so we needed some feel good food. And we found it here. They now have a restaurant with some seating inside -- no longer a food truck only establishment. I got the smothered pork chops with black eyed peas, macaroni and cheese, and collars greens. EVERYTHING was so good!! And the portions are HUGE!!!! There is no way I could finish. They give two very large pork chops and very generous servings of the sides. Also we got the lemon cake and banana pudding for dessert. Tbh I'm not a fan of lemon cake but THIS lemon cake was delicious. Soft, moist, fluffy-- great taste. I'd order it again for sure! The meal, the service, the dessert all 5 stars. We will absolutely be back!! Now I need a nap after such a fantastic meal. Best part-- I have plenty of leftovers! If you're looking for good soul food with generous portions and fair prices-- stop scrolling and come here!!!!
