This place has gone down hill since the new owners took over. Walked in the door this evening and the first thing we hear is a couple complaining that they've been there for 10 minutes and nobody has said anything to them. There were only about 4-5 tables with people so it was not busy. There were numerous tables with dirty dishes on them which is unusual for this place. Sat there for a few minutes, then we over heard another table complaining that they didn't get all of their food. Not good. Sat down for 5 minutes and nobody came over to take the dishes away on the table we sat at, nobody said they would be right over, nothing. I guess we can't go here any more. Sushi is not cheap and I'd rather give my money to a better restaurant. I'm really bummed because this was one of our favorite places to go for sushi.Anyways, after 5 minutes, we got up and left. They just watched us walk out. What a bummer!!

Been a Sushi Garden patron when they first opened over 15 years ago (guesstimate). In fact, this was my favorite Japanese restaurant in Modesto and would be considered a "regular".This is a review of the new owners who took over in July 2024 when the owners decided to retire and move back to Japan (based on the wife sharing this back in June). With any new owners, you wonder what changes they will do and if regular guests like myself will notice.Besides a new menu and adding new prices and new items, they've opened now on Saturday and Sunday. We went on a Sunday and it was slow (parking lot fairly empty and only 2 tables were filled with customers) around 2 pm. Their hours for Sunday was 12 pm to 9 pm.So let's talk about the food. I ordered the special plate at $22 and got the chicken Teriyaki and shrimp tempura combo. Wife got the same but with Salmon.Regarding my plate- gone was the potato salad they had with previous owner. They had gyoza to replace it on an earlier visit. Wasn't here. The shrimp tempura I got was super small (pic enclosed). The broccoli tempura that use to be a good sized floret was smaller . The cold broccoli in miso dressing had more of the stem on it than usual. The biggest disparity for me was the chicken. It was not the same taste (same teriyaki sauce). But the type of chicken thigh they used was way different than the previous Japanese owner. In fact, for me, it didn't have the unique taste that made me a regular patron for years when I ordered it. I can tell they've foregone using the same food company/distribution company and the chicken teriyaki is NOT sushi garden... in fact, it doesn't distinguish itself any more with other Japanese restaurants in Modesto.I had ordered the rainbow roll on a past visit with new owners, and even that, they added another type of fish on it, and lost its signature taste.Only thing that makes this still sushi garden is the interior and location but I feel that I can't say it's a favorite place for me here in Modesto.Prices gone up, portions have gotten smaller (with all restaurants because of inflation) but the subtle changes I notice has made me like it less.

This was my place to go, now things have changed do to owners changes. Hopefully we get back to the quality and flavor of before. Specially because it has been my top place to go for many years. I hope owners take in consideration and make some changes accordingly to keep us coming.

very amazing food, the workers there are very sweet and friendly as well. the wait time was definitely inconvenient but it was also understandable as many people seemed to enjoy the food here. Waiter kept checking in on us, did constant refills, and was exceptional!

This is still our favorite Japanese restaurant in town. There are many options but the service and the flavor profile of their sauces, dressing, and roll combination are our favorite. We love their salad dressing. Our favorite rolls are the dragon and spicy tuna roll but next time we are trying their lobster roll as it look spectacular.Always busy yet service is efficient, friendly, and they are always willing to accommodate special requests.

Trash.$18 for Sakè? $25 for oysters? $15 for waygu??? Been coming here to Sit down and eat since they opened and now unfortunately, I don't think l'l be ever coming back to sit down ever again. My total before tip used to be back ever again. My total before tip used to be$50-75 and today I was so surprised when it was over $100 smh. lt's not worth over $100, your better off enjoying the freshness of Sukiyaki with Nick or Okawa with Sebastian. My sashimi was warm and the girls forgot my salad. They secretly upcharged me. I should have never came back after I spotted and killed a cockaroach with my own hands at the sushi bar less than 3 weeks after the original owners retired. Now Sushi Garden is a dump spot owned by the owners who own all the other Japanese dump spots in town!! Such a disgrace this is. To top it off Fred wasn't here today so I should have known better. Sad Sad Sad this was my go to but no more. I urge everyone to take your hard earned money and precious time else where because Sushi Garden has gone down the drain.

The staff lied about my order and the menu. Ordering over the phone to go, I asked for their chicken katsu curry entree, they asked to confirm if I wanted the lunch special or the dinner entree and I confirmed the dinner entree. Upon picking it up and leaving back to work, I found it was the lunch special with a half empty container of curry and a single cut of diced meat on rice. Calling back to confirm it was t the lunch special they handed me, they the. Said there was no lunch special, only the entree. This ignores the fact I have a copy of their menu from a week ago for the order with the special being number nine and the entree in the back of the menu. Don't eat here, it's so much more expensive and worse service under the new ownership.

Sorry we never come back this place ever again. We've been come to sushi garden over 10 years. The food is always delicious. But the new owner took over, sadly the food is horrible but the service is excellent. The chicken katsu tasted like rock. The beef teriyaki was over cook. We really miss the food old day.:-(
