I enjoyed taking my 2-year old daughter here for her first swim lessons. We did the group lessons for one month. The lessons were twice a week (so eight lessons total) for 25 minutes each. There were 4 kids plus one parent with each kid. It didn't feel too crowded. The instructors were really nice, on time, and they taught kids/babies how to kick their feet in the water, move their arms in the water, blow bubbles in the water, jump off the ledge of the pool while sitting down, and dunk the kid's head underwater. We also sang songs in circles which my daughter loved. My only area of criticism is that I thought we would progress and/or build on things as each lesson occurred. However, we basically did the same things in all eight lessons. These group lessons were for 6-36 month olds though, so maybe I had too high of expectations haha I still plan to bring my daughter back here next summer for lessons!

Highly recommend for your young kids to learn how to swim!I put my two kids (ages 9 and 7) during the summer for 3 months and they both are able to swim without floaters by the end of the program. Rosie is an amazing teacher and really pushes the kids the extra mile to learn. Pricing is reasonable. They offer private and group lessons.

I'm a lap swimmer and have used this pool for several years. It was great to have something so near (I live a few blocks away) and to have a lane to myself in a pool that reliably kept its temps in the low 80s. Recently, their success has meant that the 4-weekday schedule of 2 or 3 hours became too competitive to allow lap swimming regularly or predictably (they require reservations). On the plus side:* It's very affordable* Family-oriented and they offer lessons at the same time as lap swimming* Very diverse, including several lessons for otherly-abled kids and adults* The inflatable dome covers the pool for about 4 months each year and keeps it and the air warm.On the minus:* Managing lap swimmers is an afterthought, and, unlike the lessons, can't be scheduled online* The water is clear and clean, but detritus (bandaids, hairballs, leaves) is often neglected for days -- no daily cleaning* It is a shallow pool, ranging 3.5 to about 5 feet; a little uncomfortable for some larger folks* Maintenance is casual; e.g. the gate handle often fails to work unless you know the trick (this is a years-old problem); generally minimal attention to walkways, furniture, pool stains, etc.* Lane management is sometimes poorly thought-out when lessons and lap swim take place together; tough for mobility challenged folks to enter the pool easily (despite 4 short stairs)* Criers and yellers in the grade school set are sometimes intrusive* Improvements, such as the gated exterior day care area, give it a carceral feel; not generally an attractive place. In any case, it's a great resource to this corner of Elk Grove, and I don't think I ever heard a complaint about lessons. Some of the lap swimmers I've seen over the years still find it their best choice. I found a place that met my needs better.

The instructor is nice. They're very strict on time. Hopefully, my daughter will learn after one month of teaching.

My daughter just finished her first round of swim lessons at sunshine, she has done other lessons at other places and because of how the other places did their swim lessons (dunking them without warning) my daughter was terrified to go under water she was so worried they would just dunk her. I shared this with her swim instructor to hopefully she could help my daughter get comfortable and Zoe the instructor did a great job with my daughter, my daughter has some melt downs and some lessons were harder then others and Zoe just kept working with her and was very patient and encouraging

We enrolled in the parent/tot class and were hoping it was a class we could continue taking until our toddler could move up in classes. Sadly, we were very disappointed. If you're looking for a class/instructor who engages with you and/or your toddler, is excited about "teaching" or guides you in teaching your toddler, this is not the place. This program is basically open Swim where the instructor just tells you what to do. Often times sitting on the stairs, edge of the pool or staring off..... The price is very reasonable and two days a week is great. However, if you're looking for a more personable experience to help your little one, this isn't the place. You can easily take your tot to open swim somewhere and sing the wheels on the bus to them while the splash around.

We have a lot of young kids in our family, and have been able to experience many different swim instructors and facilities. I personally have a 6 and almost 4 year old. With my 6 year old we did swimming lessons at Sheldon Acres when she was 4. It was okay, but they did seem to be a bit more aggressive and less insensitive to beginner swimmers. My niece is 2 years older than my daughter, and she was taking private lessons at that time at Sunshine. Her parents raved about the lessons, so we gave it a shot. Sunshine offers group, semi-private and private lessons. They even have a swimming team (Gators)! We've done both group and semi-private. Group is most cost effective, but you may be limited to days/time slots and are in a mix of kids you don't know with the same level. With the younger toddler/preschool age, sometimes you might get a cryer, which can be a distraction to the other swimmers...but the instructors do pretty well with keeping everyone focused and on task. I really like semi-private because you have a little bit more control over day/time selection, and as long as you have two other swimming buddies with your child (total of 3 swimmers, including yours), the price is almost equivalent to group. But with friends/kids you know and a better selection of day/time of your choice. But, they must be on the same swim level. If you're not sure of your child's swim level, you can have an assessment done on Friday late afternoon/early evening. Call to schedule a time slot. Both my kids are water babies but do not like wearing floatation devices or life jackets. So getting them to become swimmers was a must! My daughter took summer lessons here when she was 4 and 5 and is now a swimmer! My son took one session here last summer when he was 2.5, but it was very introductory in the tadpole class. More so, getting the kids comfortable in the water and learning water safety i.e. if you fall in the pool, how to get to the wall and climb out. This summer, he's a whole new boy! I initially had him take lessons at CalFit (for convenience because he could swim then we workout), but their lessons were very remedial and didn't feel like lessons. I could do what they were doing with him and didn't want to pay for what I myself could do. So we went back to Sunshine and I put him back into tadpole to re-introduce the water, then moved up to frog and we are just finishing up this session this week. He is so confident with jumping in the water, floating on his back, breathing under water, diving down for water toys, and now starting to learn how to swim independently with his arms. After one more frog class, he should be ready to move onto the next level. But at the rate he is learning, I am confident by next summer, when he will be 4.5, he will be a full on swimmer! Sunshine does a really great job at training and certifying their instructors. Most of the instructors are young adult/college age. They have all been very friendly with the children, patient, which is key, and are very motivating! They always greet your child at the beginning of the lesson, bring them to the water for the lesson, then after, bring your child to you and follow-up with each parent on how their child did for the day, progress and improvements. This, I really love and appreciate from Sunshine...because at CalFit, it was hard to tell when the lesson was over. The instructor literally got out of the water and left the kids (who don't swim) still playing in the steps of the water. Yes, all of us parents are still there. But at least give us a heads up, like hey the kids did great, see you tomorrow. Going back to Sunshine, the facilities are nice. You can even host events in their building i.e. weddings, parties, etc or rent out the pool for a pool party at a pretty affordable rate. More than enough space in the changing/locker rooms. Gender neutral bathrooms. They have two hot showers available for the kids for before and/or after swimming. The kids love it! Part of the deck is covered, providing shade with tables and chairs for parents/bystanders. The only reason I did not give them 5 stars is because their website promotes the water is 84 degrees all year long. And I've personally swam in that water, even in the summer. Definitely not 84 degrees, but we come for the quality of lessons, not for the temperature of the pool. The only time it was an issue for us was when we did lessons in May because it was pretty cold at that time...but in the summer, the water temperature is not an issue as it's hot as hell in Sac! They also offer family swim nights on Friday's which is included with your annual registration fee of $25! It's a great way to get all the kids out and swimming. We'll be back again next summer for my son. If you are looking for good swimming instructors, or even to perfect your child's current swimming techniques, this is the place!

A community gem - all of my children and many of my students (on the swim team) learned how to swim at Sunshine Swim Center. I appreciate the instructor and management communication from registration to/through the course of spring and summer lessons. Everyone is really great with children and make swimming and time in the water fun.
