Great group of people. My grandson couldn't wait for practice! He loved it there. We came from Manteca which made it difficult to get to practice, but well worth the drive.

If you want to learn self defense, this is the place! I had seen the advertisement on Instagram for the women's 5 weeks beginners classes. At first I was nervous but coach Brandon and Jasmine made me feel comfortable learning and belonging in the class. I left feeling excited for the next class! I met a bunch of ladies and made new friends. I finished class famished and had the 'black belt' açaí bowl made by Kiana, it was so yummy and replenished me! Can't wait to continue my jiujitsu journey!!

This review is from my husband, who just completed the 5 Week Adult Beginner Jui Jitsu Course:Let me start off by saying that I am 40 years old and I never expected I would be getting into jui jitsu at my age. My son has been practicing jui jitsu for about 6 months and it got me interested, so this 5 week course was a perfect way to give it a try! The instructors are welcoming and highly skilled, they taught me the fundamentals needed to continue on my journey with confidence! This beginning course has taught me some self-defense skills, along with providing me with the best work out of my life...mentally and physically challenging. This is so much better than going to the gym, because it offers more to learn during the workout. I would highly recommend this course to anyone with an interest in self-defense, jui jitsu or anyone just looking for a new way to exercise! I have now signed up to take regular classes and I love it! And my son does too, which is fun! Thank you to everyone at Open Mat!

My kids did a trial class. We moved here from the Bay Area two weeks ago, where masks were mandatory and almost everything regarding interaction was strictly enforced (distance). Even in martial arts (in the bay), kids had their circle of interaction and distance.Main concern was lack of fresh air. For the first 30 minutes, it was like a sauna. Front and back doors were closed. That's a lot of people in the heat and in an enclosed area. They finally opened the back and front doors for air circulation. There's one fan. They did do temperature checks on the kids and they couldn't get off the mat without shoes on. My recommendation is to keep the doors open to allow fresh air and circulation. Especially now with Covid. I'm vaccinated, my kids are not. Nobody had masks on. Kids didn't, that's understandable. It was to the parents discretion about whether or not the kids would wear them. All the parents on the side didn't wear them. If you're still a little hesitant about mask wearing, I would not recommend coming here. The sign outside says to wear them, but nobody does. But they're getting rid of the mask mandate in the next couple of weeks, so it probably won't matter. Second concern was class size. There was one instructor for maybe 30ish kids. He did his best but the class was huge. At my kids old school, for a class that size, there were three teachers/instructors. They did say they were moving to a large facility and looking for assistant instructors in the future. The first 20 minutes were drills and exercises. That was great. I haven't seen my kids work that hard in a long time. They definitely got a workout. At the end, the kids played tag. All the kids went nuts. It was nice seeing all of them having fun. Overall, this program looks promising and maybe I'd enroll them in the future. I would give them 3-4 stars. The kids had fun. But with this snapshot of time (lack of air circulation and large class size), I would not enroll the kids until the changes take effect.

Open Mat Academy has been a great place to get back in shape and train Martial Arts!Given the fact that I've taken a long break from Jiu Jitsu, it's been a seamless transition to get back on the mats. Chris (BJJ Black Belt) is an awesome instructor who cares about the safety of each student and preserves the true fundamentals of Bjj. The students here are welcoming and respectful. It's been awesome getting to train and "roll" with the class. I've never had a bad experience so far. All positive vibes! Kudos to Chris and the entire Open Mat Academy team for leading a world class facility in the heart of the Valley.

If you are looking a BJJ family, this is the place to be! My 2 girls have been going for almost 2 months now and every single day my 6 year constantly asks throughout the day if it's time to go to class. She absolutely loves it! She was super shy the first few days, but the kids and Coach Brandon made it easy for her to come out of her shell. Every single kid here has their own level of knowledge and they all help one another out. No one is left hanging! We are so happy to be part of the Open Mat Family!

We've been with OpenMat for almost 3years now! That should tell you how great they are! I questioned if this was going to be something my daughter would enjoy, but she loves it! It's been such a positive thing for her. It's taught her to overcome fears & to work hard. If you're looking for something new definitely try them out!
