After a lot of water cooler talk, me and my co-worker finally met to shoot some guns at Manteca Sportsman. Its a small outdoor range that offers a little of everything: pistol, rifle, shotgun. Its pistol range only has a few spots, with only 7 and 25 yards available. Rifle has 11 (I think) benches. Manteca Sportsman is quite unique because the ceasefire is at the discretion if the RO and not the timer. At first, I thought that this system might cut into my range time but in really did not. What Iiked the best is that Manteca Sportsman has I felt everyone is laid back and chill.

While in the Manteca area for a class my sister and I decided to try out a shooting range in the area. Arriving at the range one fills out the release of liability form, pay their fees and gets their lane assignment from the RSO (Range Safety Officer). While in the range office a gentleman in a Blue Coat introduced himself as the RSO. We were given the run-down of no speed firing, mag-dumping, etc, 1 round per second. Fair enough.Once out on the range, another guy who was shooting wearing a brown coat and beanie cap was directing us to the lanes. Odd, as only one RSO is needed. Meanwhile, we could hear speed firing on an adjacent range, yet it may have been a class qualification, as they use "Trident" training school,... (Perhaps I should call Don Shipley). The point and purpose of our visit is to A.) Check out a new range we may want to partner with and B.) my sister needs to practice for her CCW Class renewal. The set-up was fine yet I noticed Brown Coat walking around to other folks lanes and watching and giving advice,... yes let's call it advice. I am thinking literally "Stay in your Lane" dude, as that is rude. Now I have been shooting for a while, like since 1978, I was a qualified instructor for over 25 years, so I am attempting to instruct my sister on her target acquisition and trigger control. Then Blue Jacket comes over and starts giving advice, and mentions a women's firearms class, while I am attempting to get her relaxed and back into the groove. Its a kind jester and his heart was in the right place so, I let him talk. Her next volly, she has an issue with her hand as it's really cold out and she set her pistol down due to cramping. Now, the safest place for a firearm on the range is in your holster or on the table,... here comes Tackleberry with a Brown Coat. Half yelling: "Don't put a loaded firearm down on the table, you never set a loaded firearm down on the table!" So, I picked the weapon up, cleared it and locked the slide back and jammed a flag in it, to show clear chamber. He was still griping: "Sheesh! I can't believe that,... she set a loaded firearm on the table!"She was done, after that. It is bad enough that she has shooters anxiety, and it was 46 degrees out, she does not need John Rambo running around her critiquing her safety performance. On a cold line after a cease fire, don't leave a weapon loaded, the action should be open and flags in. On a "Hot Line" if she needs assistance, or has an issue, place the loaded firearm down, with the barrel down range, (Do not pass it to me) and I will handle the malfunction or issue from there. So, he was wrong for that and they lost 2 customers because if it.After reading the reviews, it seems to be a mixed bag of "I love this range" to "The staff are rude and inconsiderate of others" among other complaints. Then, as I am walking back to the range area after going to the car, here is Brown Coat hovering over our firearms. Then he is pointing at one of my sisters pistols asking if it is the "Three, Eight, Zero?" I said: "no, its a Ruger Max 9." He says: "A Three Eighty?" No, Max 9 as in 9 millimeter. His response: "Oh!, okay!" yet continues to peruse over our cache of firearms,... poor form. You ask to look closer, not just stick your beak in there 13 inches away.As I am loading up the last bag, I hear Brown Coat check another patron for laying down a loaded pistol on the table while the firing line is hot. Blue Jacket told him: "That's okay when the line is hot." Brown Coat states: "Well accidents happen!" and walks away mumbling. No, the only mistake is giving Brown Coat any semblance of power on that range, he will drive business away and prevent repeat business. We won't be back,...

I used to come to the rifle range all the time. Since an incident took place they had to shut it down to further notice. Waiting for it to come back online. The pistol range is okay, never really used it.Rob

It could be a good range to go to if it wasn't for the overly opinionated range masters. If safety is not an issue then they should keep their big fat mouths shut. Not everyone wants their ignorant opinions. My wife was running her 9mm Glock and the idiot range master - in his feeble opinion- thought women should only shoot revolvers. It was the last time either of us will waste our time going to this range.

Is cool spot to shoot. Been shooting here off and on for 15 years or so. Range master and office staff are cool people and always friendlyMy one issue is the "LOCAL KNOW IT ALLS"and yes there are a few that hang out and almost harrass people that are trying to have fun and shoot and relax. If I ask for help or your opinion/help the fine, otherwise leave me Alone Please. I dont need someone telling me how and what I need to do with my rifle or pistol.

Unnecessary nagging, extremely strict about rapid fire even when the range is empty. Maybe ok if it's your first time being around a gun but other than that not a good range if you are someone who knows how to shoot and is just trying to get better.

My student and I utilized this facility for safety, basic pistol, and marksmanship training. An older man, the Range Safety Officer, came over to our lane in the outdoor range and dropped a handful of unfixed cartridges in my large ammo case from his hand: I was training my student about the four pistol malfunctions and had dropped a number of rounds on the deck -- so there was SOME unfired ammunition on the ground around us.Later, my pistol malfunctioned (dead trigger) and when I cleared the action, for some unknown reason, after loading a fresh round from the magazine, I stopped to consider something that was bothering me. I dropped the magazine and locked the slide back (in the process ejecting the round picked up from the magazine).I couldn't identify the reason that the previous round didn't fire, but I also couldn't swear that the unfired round had been ejected. I certainly didn't SEE a round in the breech, but that "little voice" kept nagging at me. Taking a barrel inspection light and illuminating the barrel from the breech end, I saw that the barrel had something in it.Taking a tool for just such circumstances, I dislodged an unfired round from the barrel... a 9mm cartridge. We were using .40S&W ammunition in our Glock firearms. I didn't own either a 9mm pistol OR any 9mm ammunition.Apparently, the well-meaning RSO picked up several rounds of 9mm ammunition and put it in our supply of .40S&W cartridges: they looked identical in size and color. We left the range after informing those in the office about what had happened. A thorough and careful search of the 4-500 rounds of .40S&W ammunition at home revealed the presence of 8 rounds of 9mm ammunition mixed in with the .40S&W.This well-meaning RSO might have caused severe injuries or death of several of us.
