Visiting Hastings Island Hunting Preserve is an experience! It's located on an island in the Delta. The island is a working ranch. The hunting preserve is located within the ranch. They release pheasants into the fields and hunters and their dogs hunt them. They don't plant birds. They release them from a truck and the birds fly into the cover. The fields have plenty of cover year-round. You pay for each bird you bag. They have a bird cleaning service and it seems most hunters use it. I do too.The preserve has trained dogs in their kennel. Those who don't have a hunting dog can rent one for their hunt. I think they also offer dog training as a service. Check with them about that. During the off-season, the preserve is open for dog training. Many AKC breed clubs host AKC hunt tests there on weekends. In addition to the hunting and bird dog training, the hunting preserve has a snack bar and a trap range.I highly recommend HIHP!

The best Pheasant hunting of any club we have ever been to. Birds are released the night before and you can hunt any field you like. The staff is really in the customer service business. The restaurant serves very good comfort food at fair prices. Clubhouse and restrooms are open all night and always clean.

I haven't been to Hastings Island since the early '60's where my dad judged and ran his GS Pointers in GS Pointer Club of California field trials. I want to thank Dave and Brian for inviting me up from Fresno...and showing me what I've been missing for the last 55+ years. Grand memories revisited and meeting a bunch of wonderful and passionate like minded folks.I'd also like to give a thankful shout out to HIHP for allowing Lance Keller the Gun Tailor, who expertly fitted both of my 20ga over/under shotguns, to operate his stock fitting business in their parking lot. It is obvious that many of the members and guests appreciate his service too...based on the number of shooters that stopped in with their shotguns for a fitting and advice.

First day as a new member was great. Friendly. Good attitude. Nice facilities. Huge place. We saw them put out a lot of birds. My friend and I have now hunted there a couple times and continue to be impressed by how welcoming everyone is and the quality of the land. It's a lot of fun being able to go hunt so close to home, and not be walking a plot of land where someone just planed a bird for you to shoot. It's as wild of pheasant hunting as we're going to get in the bay area. It's also a great place for kids. I've seen a number of little munchkins out hunting with their family. Every club member and the club itself seems to be sincerely excited to get the next generation out hunting.

This hunting club IS NOT OPEN TO THE GENERAL PUBLIC.We had a fantastic time.My teenage son won a 4 bird hunt from a CDFW Jr. Hunter program. We arrived early, got the administrative paperwork done and sat down for breakfast. The breakfast was HUGE! The clubhouse was smoky from a large central fireplace that trying to draft against large kitchen fans. The kitchen hoods actually pulled smoke INTO the building. Cough, cough.Across the driveway we went to the kennel to pick-up our loaner dog. There was no sign telling us where to wait or go. No one was at the kennel and we had to wait around for someone to retrieve our dog.We were assigned a German Short Haired pointer named "Bear." As it turned out he was an excellent dog that loved to work, he listened & followed directions. Only thing is, that at times he did not want to release the birds he retrieved. Bird cleaning was included in our package as well. Members buy "bird cards" in lots of 20 or 40, averaging around $35-40 per bird. Cleaning is another $5.25 per bird.New members must be sponsored by an existing member. So walk-ins are tough. Most hunters try to stay near the clubhouse to hunt where the birds are released. But with thousands of acres, there are birds in outlying parcels that are more wild & with fewer hunters.Overall a well ran operation, with a few glitches.

Hastings Island feels like a second home to me. I have many great memories here for the different AKC events including hunt tests and walking field trials. This is a BIG operation here and it is always tidy, professional, and welcoming. The animals here are treated properly. Pack your orange because you must wear blaze orange on the property.
