"My son started here last month on a recommendation from my coworker, and I'm so glad we did! This place is so structured, and teaching my son discipline on a level that I never could. He's loving it so far. Can't wait to see how he progresses! I only wish I could get him there more days a week."
"I signed up with my niece at the end of November 2021, three months ago. We go to the adult Muay Thai classes 5 days a week, and love it. I joined to support my niece and to get into shape, but I really enjoy it and have really noticed positive changes. I have lost 20 lbs and am still loosing weight (235-215) and no longer take medication on the daily for heartburn. I went to the doctor yesterday and she asked what I had changed because all my numbers were outstanding and was closer to a healthy weight (less fat.) The warm up exercises in the beginning are rough, but accommodations are made for those who can't do the full thing. The instruction and motivation given from Coach Cliff and the other instructors is top notch. All the students are respectful, but still have fun. TLDR: I was old and fat, I am now old and less fat, and have enjoyed the process of getting healthy. Learning the sport for me is a vinous, but I do feel confident I could hold my own in a Muay Thai match."
"We signed our 10yr old son up (as well as my husband) 3 months ago. It's been the BEST experience. The coaches are top notch. Coach Sarah and Coach Eric are amazing with the kids. Coach Pedro is a wonderful asset to the gym and he keeps the kids laughing. Our son is learning BJJ but he's also learning respect, good sportsmanship and teamwork. He is gaining confidence, jits skills, friendships and he's loving it. The gym is clean. Classes start on time. I really have nothing but good things to say about JG Academy Lodi."
"If you're thinking about training BJJ but aren't sure which local gym to join in the Sacramento/Elk Grove area, then I highly recommend Waza BJJ. It has a great reputation for being one of the best schools in the Sacramento Region, with highly skilled black belt coaches, a dedicated community of great students, a reasonably priced monthly membership, and lineage traced back to Carlos Gracie. In fact, the owner of Waza BJJ, Derek DiManno, trained and received his black belt from Cassio Werneck. He was the third black in the Sacramento Metropolitan area with over 25 years of experience. All of the other black belt coaches are also highly skilled, knowledgeable, and have decades of experience. When deciding on a BJJ gym to join, I factored in the coaches' experience and lineage, as well as reading reviews on Yelp, to choose a gym I could see myself being a member of for at least the next ten years. And I found that gym in Waza.I'm currently a white belt and started training at Waza in 2023 at the age of 40. It's never too late to start. I had never trained in a martial art before, but I've already competed in three tournaments, winning second place at the previous Jiu Jitsu World League in Stockton, California, and I'm nearing my blue belt promotion later this year. Free ClassWaza offers anyone interested in joining the gym an opportunity to take a free class to get a feel for the gym, coaches, and students. You complete the waiver online and show up. They will provide you with the GI to wear for your first class, so you don't need to buy anything. I recommend bringing a water bottle, wearing flip-flops or slides, and wearing compression/rash guard shirts or shorts under the GI. MembershipAfter your first class, you can decide if you want to sign up. Waza provides different membership options. Maybe you want to sign up for a month-to-month, 6-month, or 12-month. Curriculum Waza has a curriculum they follow or that you can use to monitor your progress. Each week, the coaches will teach a different technique. For example, one week could be working on back takes, and the next week, you could work on guard attacks or escaping side control. Class StructureEach class usually starts with a flow or warm-up technique. For example, you could warm up with a partner doing your favorite guard pass, working on armbar setups (not actually submitting your partner), or flowing through several movements. Community/StudentsIn my experience, what makes Waza such a great BJJ gym is the students. Everyone is chill, helpful, and isn't there to hurt you. I haven't come across anyone who was malicious or tried to hurt me intentionally. Trust me. There are gyms out there with toxic environments. After a 5-10-minute warm-up, you learn about 2-3 different techniques. Usually, you learn an offensive and defensive technique. After about thirty minutes of warm-ups and drilling techniques, the class starts the live rolls. Generally, the live rolls are five six-minute rounds. Belt PromotionsIn my experience at Waza, belt promotions are based on progress in technique and skill level, including time or commitment to training regularly. You don't test for belt promotions at Waza, and there is no stripe system, at least for adults. If you're training consistently and getting better at the techniques, you'll eventually get promoted. Schedule Waza offers plenty of classes throughout the day and open mat sessions on the weekends. LocationWaza is located in a strip mall in Laguna West in Elk Grove. There is ample parking in the lot or on the street at the front entrance to the gym, so you'll never have an issue finding parking. Kids ClassesWaza has an incredible kids/youth program led by Coach John and Chris who are two of the nicest guys. The parents love the coaches and safe environment their children get to train at throughout the week. Most of the adults who attend Waza originally attended for their children but also decided to join. Waza really is a wonderful community. HealthThe last thing I'll mention is that BJJ is a full contact martial art, so you will get bumps, bruises, and minor injuries. It's part of the journey and training. But there's lots of health benefits to training BJJ. Aside from learning how to defense yourself, you will lose body fat/weight. Since joining Waza, I'm down about 30 pounds. There are other men and women who've lost body fat and weight by training regularly. I hope my review helps you make an informed decision on choosing Waza. Obviously, the best way to find out if Waza is a great gym for you is to give it a try. And if you happen to join Waza, come say hi to me during one of the classes. Good luck!"
"We love PMA! The coaches here are amazing! They are very patient & instill good values into the students. I love the fact that the coaches not only cares about what happens inside the dojo, but also outside of it - making sure the student are doing well at home AND at school before distributing stripes, and belts. Our 6 months with them expired today, and I decided to move it to a yearly renewal since I can see my daughter being with them for a while. She has improved significantly with her balance, focus & overall health just by going to here.Overall, I would recommend PMA to anyone considering having their child or themselves learn martial arts."
"Been meaning to review this place for awhile, especially since this is the spot where my kiddo's jiu jitsu journey began. My family had experienced a couple different gyms in the Bay and when looking into an extracurricular for our kid in the Valley, we knew there were a few key things that were important to us. First, a welcoming and inclusive atmosphere. Second, coaches who care for the safety of the students as much as their progress. Third, a place that treated each student equally, challenging them to be better each class. I'm happy to say that Charles Gracie Academy in Mountain House met all these expectations and more. From the first day we signed up our kid, we got a "welcome to the family" from the coaches. It felt warm and inviting, especially for a nervous kid joining the 4-6 age group. This age group is not easy to manage, but somehow at each class the coaches succeed in coaching them to listen and follow through as best they can. Watching from the sidelines, I can see how much patience, firmness, and diligence it takes to wrangle the low attention span this group has collectively. While they are teaching the fundamentals of the sport, the coaches make it fun, too. If they're not having fun, what's the point, right? In a year, I watched my kid grow and thrive thanks in part to the influence of discipline and focus from training at this jiu jitsu academy. He's developing into a kid who will have self-control, self-confidence, awareness and most of all can kick ass if an occasion calls for it. Don't hesitate on this place. Go check it out. Who knows, maybe you'll be the next to join this growing family."
"A welcome addition to the Sacramento jiu jitsu scene - one unlike any other metropolitan area. Antoine and crew will certainly add fantastic insights to your jiu jitsu game. What- don't want to try jiu jitsu?! Well, then see them about general fitness - I'm sure they be got you covered. Adults and Kids classes throughout the week."
"Samir is a world class jiu jitsu black belt. Someone I look up to. I highly recommend it here is you want high level authentic Brazilian jiu jitsu"
"We love this place ! The instructors are so kind and work great with the kids. When my youngest has trouble with a move or needs extra attention their is always someone willing to help . The atmosphere is so warm and welcoming , they treat you like family. My kids get so excited to go to class . And as a mom I love that my kids are not only learning jujutsu but respect ."

Being a father of 2 boys and a Peace Officer, I wanted to ensure my boys learned to defend themselves, self respect, respect for others. I brought both of them to the Dojo to try out a class and they both loved it. Now they look forward to every class and are sure to try their "new moves" on me at home. Seeing the positive impact Sensai Jason and Cortez Full Circle was having on my boys, I decided I would sign up myself. Since signing up just 3 months ago, I have gotten in much better shape, met new friends from all walks of life and I have began to learn ways to defend myself to help ensure I make it home to my family. I would recommend, training at Cortez Full Circle to anyone. It doesn't matter where you come from, or what you believe in, you are welcome to come give Jiu Jitsu a try and will be welcomed with open arms just as I was! Lastly, I'd like to touch on some of the negative reviews that are on here. Sensai Jason and Lillie are 2 amazing people who I believe are out here making a difference in the world. When my boys and I signed up, everything was explained to us in complete detail and further explained if I didn't quite understand something. I am sorry you had a negative experience but Sensai Jason and Lillie are here to help and never ever in the business to do people wrong.I will continue to support Cortez Full Circle as they are making a positive impact on both my life and the future of my boys. Do not let a couple people, out of the thousands Sensai Jason has trained sway your drive or decision on giving Cortez Full Circle a try!!!! I'll see ya on the mat!!!!!If you are not training, someone, somewhere is, and when you meet, he will win!!!!!

My daughter has really blossomed at Waza BJJ. She started when she was 4 years old and she is now 8 years old and recently promoted to grey belt. Mr. John and Mr. Chris are fabulous instructors. They know how to motivate and talk to the kids, while teaching them to be disciplined and yet also kind. For anybody interested in martial arts, I highly recommend Waza BJJ! Just go and try a free class and tell them Jax Cheung referred you!

My whole family has signed up for classes and we LOVE this school. This particular location has done a soft opening, so if you go there right now (October 2021), take into consideration that the studio isn't finished yet. That being said, the staff are all working at the Elk Grove location as well so you can know the high quality you'll get with this team. Floyd and Phil are so helpful and patient. These are the guys you'll probably first get to know when you come in and check out the place. You know immediately that these men both care about getting you set up for what your family needs. Mimi is the front desk boss. She is always ready to help with account questions, uniform and supply needs, and just about anything else. Mr. Michael (AKA Captain America) is the youngest instructor on the staff but you wouldn't know it if you were judging his knowledge or his abilities. He's proven to be fantastic with the younger kids and I've even trained with him myself and he gives the student exactly what they need every time. He slows down when the student needs it but he will also turn up the intensity if he sees the student can handle it. Mister Isaki is the head instructor at Elk Grove, and Mister Jason is the head instructor at Sacramento. These guys are both incredible teachers. They've worked wonders with my son in particular. My son is 8 and a gamer by nature. He typically has little to no interest in physical activity. These two teachers have taken time to push him when he needs it, pull him aside for extra instruction from time to time, and they're also very deliberate about celebrating his efforts publicly. Master Liner is the owner and head instructor for both schools (the boss man). He shows up at classes really often. After he makes rounds greeting parents and students, checking in on how everyone is feeling about their time at PMA, he will then usually teach the class for a bit. He's so good at explaining how to get each part of a move or technique and also WHY it's important to do it that way. I HIGHLY recommend Premiere Martial Arts and am excited to see this new location fully open and hit the ground running.

I came to this academy seeking to build confidence in my daughter when it comes to self-defense. She was very hesitant on wanting to try it out before we went to our first trial. The first day--coach Paul and coach Sara were so welcoming to her! They joked around with her easing her nervousness, made sure she was partnered up with someone her level or ensured that someone that had advanced skills was gentle with her and had a watchful eye on her. By the end of class, she was so excited that she said she wanted to join. It's been about 2 months now since we've joined and she's gaining so much confidence in herself and techniques. She gets excited about class and likes working on the skills that she's learned. The coaches are great as there are usually 3-4 of them walking around to make sure the kids are practicing their skills. They make the classes fun by playing off of the kid's energies and joking around with them. They are stern and disciplinary when control of the class is needed. My daughter loves to joke around with her coaches. They are well-trained in BJJ and is always pointing out techniques during sparring. They are personable and always available for any questions I have in regards to how to do a certain technique.I really like that coach Paul allows the parents to come to spectate the kids on a personal level i.e. near the mats and not having to be far away. This allows me to see what my child has been learning, how the coaches are interacting with the kids and for me to give encouragement to my daughter. The mats are really clean and the coaches make a huge emphasis on keeping unwiped feet off the mats.I highly recommend the mountain house Charles Gracie's BJJ Academy and I look forward to seeing the new development in skills that she will learn here.

Dropped to train again with coach Isaac and Keith. I love their warm up drills and instructional. Class is intimate so the coaches can watch and coach you through your drills and rolls. Gym is clean and atmosphere is awesome. Highly recommend training here if you are considering jiu jitsu. It has help me dropped off over 13+ lbs and my cardio has been the best it's ever been and I'm about to hit 40 very soon. Jiu Jitsu and the coach will teach your kids not only defense and confidence, but discipline and honor which will carry over into their lives. Have both my son training in this art for past 2 years. Again if you been thinking about it, do it. Nothing to lose but weights. It will change you.

Samir and Queixinho have a undeniably great reputation within the jiu jitsu community, and it was that reputation that brought me to the school. Now that I've been their student, it is their advanced technical knowledge, supportive coaching, and amazing students that keep me coming. I feel fortunate to have truly world-class professors that are also approachable and fun. Honestly, if you are in the area, I don't know why you'd train anywhere else!

"I started training progressive kickboxing in January and love it. Soon after my husband joined me and I have also brought my daughter along for a class. Master C was so welcoming and gracious and the atmosphere and personality of the school is very friendly and again I have to use the word 'welcoming'. I have learned so much from not only Mr C but also instructors, Isaiah & Tina & our classmates as well. Everyone is helpful, respectful and encouraging. The school is also very clean. We look forward to training BJJ here as well in the future. If you are even thinking of training, don't wait. Just come down. You won't regret it."
"Open Mat Academy has been a great place to get back in shape and train Martial Arts!Given the fact that I've taken a long break from Jiu Jitsu, it's been a seamless transition to get back on the mats. Chris (BJJ Black Belt) is an awesome instructor who cares about the safety of each student and preserves the true fundamentals of Bjj. The students here are welcoming and respectful. It's been awesome getting to train and "roll" with the class. I've never had a bad experience so far. All positive vibes! Kudos to Chris and the entire Open Mat Academy team for leading a world class facility in the heart of the Valley."
"I like the American Grappling Academy because it offers Gi and NoGi Jiu Jitsu. The two main coaches are Black Belts in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. Anything you want to learn they can teach it to you. The classes have a fun atmosphere, which makes learning a lot easier . If you're looking into starting Jiu Jitsu or getting back into it, give American Grappling Academy a try."
"Cool place. Jiu jitsu upstairs and cross fit downstairs. Husband and wife Julio and Tara are great. Thanks, cross fit rocks!"
"Looking for a great Jiu-Jitsu Academy in Stockton? Well lucky for you, you found it. Operated by the most loving people and most importantly they love this stuff! You have to go in and try it to see for yourself. The love, passion and dedication that Rich has will be completely transparent when training with him. But again, you gotta check it out for yourself. Tell him I sent ya!Happy Training!"
"We shopped 7 schools. Came back to the 1st one bc they raised the bar too high! Instructor Bernard loves what he does and it shows. The babies love him. They learn in the most fun way possible and actually retain the information he gives them! Let's be real, parents are investing in their children in hopes for an ROI. This place delivers indefinitely. We are excited to watch our son evolve in BJJ at this school. Friendly and dedicated staff, great communication and wonderful network of families.10/10/10 all the way."
"This place is one of kind. I visited most of the Jiujitsu programs in Stockton looking to start my son who was 5 years old at the time and my son instantly loved this place! He picked this school to train at! It was the atmosphere. The kids class are awesome! There are games involve, drills and friendly little competitions that kept kids very attentive (which is extremely difficult to do for 4,5,6 year olds). This gym is very clean and easy to get to (just west of I-5 freeway off of Hammer Lane). The classes are laid back and offers a very chill and stress free environment. I love that they play lots of 80's and reggae music in the background during classes. Tim and Stella are fantastic instructors! I liked so much for my son that I started training here too once I saw my son was getting after it! Honestly, I was apprehensive at first because I had a couple reasons: 1:I had an old neck injury and was scared of aggravating it, but I have not because everyone I roll with is super cool and respectful about my condition. 2: I train at another martial arts school; Tim and Stella are totally cool with it because they know I'm just trying to become a better martial artist. Everyone here is super cool and easy going. The instruction is first class. I had came from another Jiujitsu school and had to adjust to an entirely new way of thinking, analyzing my game and strategies (10th Planet is on another level). It was great starting over again and being humbled. One thing about training Jiu-Jitsu, it puts your ego in check pretty quickly! If you wanna train with ego, the mats quickly adjusts that issue. Come in with an open mind and an attitude of ready to learn. Learning Jiu-Jitsu is one the best empty handed skills one can learn to effectively have self defense skills. They gi and no gi classes."
"It takes a lot of patience to deal with little kids and I'm thankful these teachers have the patience..... my daughter decided she wanted to hang up her track shoes and try something new, so we allowed it. She train next door at the Factroy so we always see the Jiu-Jitsu building, decided to give it a try and as a parent, I like that their patient ... their structured... and educated in their craft. My daughter is someone that likes her personal space so an adjustment for her is allowing someone up and close and personal lol but she's adjusting just fine, the owner is very nice as well kids extra curricular activities are expensive... what I like about this facility is their not tryna take your money they want to make sure this is something your child wants to do... and even when they get started they check in with you asking you how does your child liking the class. Thank you guys"
"My daughter just started going to a taekwondo class here at aka!and it has been the best decision we have ever made ! Not only does she love it , it always keeps her focus which is not easy to do! The staff is great! and her instructor Sean is really amazing with her and all the kids ! I am so glad we decided to join"
"I'm not a person who generally rates 5 stars to places but I have to give this place a 5. My daughter started with a trial when Gracie's first opened at this location. We didn't plan on staying long but my daughter loves it and has made some really good friends along the way.My son has now also joined the party and both kiddos love their coaches. They are learning life skills to protect themselves. We've referred quite a few friends and all that have joined have said their kiddos love it.I like how I am able to cater my schedule based on my kiddos other extracurricular activities unlike other places that have limited schedules. The flexibility for me as a parent is a number one factor on where I take my kids. If you are interested in having your kiddos learn self defense skills go give Gracie's a try. The coaches there are truly amazing and friendly."
"I've trained a few times at this gym while preparing for competitions. Everyone here is incredibly friendly and willing to provide training advice. It takes over an hour one-way for me to drive here and it's always worth the trip!"
""It takes a village to raise a child." I'm so glad we found this place for our little girl. The importance of good manners and good behavior is one of the main lessons every time the kids are in class. This is an amazing MMA school. Not only do they teach kids how to protect themselves and learn an art, they're also teaching them to grow up to become good people. I love that they work with parents to ensure that the kids are learning what it truly means to earn a stripe or a belt. I'm glad they have become a part a part of our village. They have the parents participate at every class as well and I think that's such an important connection to make with the kids. My little girl is usually the only girl in her class and I'm happy to see that she can hold her own! I look forward to her earning her black belt in one or even multiple avenues of Martial Arts. They also have kickboxing classes daily and it will definitely get you going! The facility is so nice and their system is very impressive. Just try a free class for you or your child, you'll see what I mean. Oss."
"I was a guest from out of town and Albert wasKind enough to let me drop in for his class. Super instructor and a great gym. You can always tell a good gym by the members and how welcoming they are. This is a great gym! If you are considering taking up BJJ, this is a great place to start your journey."
"My son loves his coaches. This is a great way for boys to learn and get mma training. We have to keep our boys strong for the future!"
