State and Lake Chicago Tavern

Breakfast is terrible honestly. If your eggs are not good...... you know the rest was mid. The drinks on the other hand were decent. The spicy margarita was good when one bartender made it but absolutely terrible when a different bartender made it. Definitely need to work on consistency.2 stars because their bathroom is great. Unfortunately I would not come back.

Came here for the first time to try something different for pre-theatre dining. The ambiance is nice inside: an upscale tavern with a lot of TVs. Service was fantastic all night. Our table ordered several rounds of drinks and everyone was happy with their selections. I was especially pleased that there was decent wine on the menu, which isn't always the case at a tavern-style restaurant. I ordered the State and Lake Burger for my entree, which came with fries. It was not at all the best burger I ever had, nor was it particularly innovative: very generic, actually, but good, as were the fries. The bill was reasonable for the most part: a little much, but that is to be expected when you are dining anywhere downtown. Overall, I'd give the place 3.5 stars if that was an option. I'll go back if I have to and have a decent meal, but I will never crave this place.

Quick walk from the hotel. Love when they get the aioli right. Hot fries. Turkey sandwich had so much turkey but this girl isn't gonna complain.

Stopped by to grabe a bite before checking out from TheWit. I waited until lunch to eat with the intention of getting the salmon wrap. Well to my surprise, there had been a recent change in chefs and the menu. I was quite underwhelmed by the menu. It seemed bland and or "safe". There were no items in my opinion that offered a flare of taste. I asked the workers what they normally get. The burger was recommended but I had just eaten a burger the day before. However, one worker recommended added a fried egg and avocado so that's what I ordered. The burger was delicious. The service was excellent as usual. There was a slight wait to get the menu but they were also switching from breakfast to lunch so I understood. But even with the switch and wait, my service was great. I'll be back in a couple of weeks. Please consider putting the salmon wrap back on the menu though.

For the 17th annual Chicago Restaurant Week, I choose to go to State and Lake Chicago Tavern. Can you believe it? Me, being a self-proclaimed foodie participating in Chicago Restaurant Week for the first time!Well it was a great experience, because I went there after work and met up with a great friend. I was able to enjoy a really nice drink and order from the Chicago Restaurant Week menu items. The vibe of the restaurant was really nice. It's next to The Wit Hotel, and I was able to sit in there while waiting for the restaurant to open at 5pm. You can conveniently enter the restaurant from the hotel lobby. Our waitress for this busy night was really nice and attentive.Now for the food and drinks. The best thing was the cocktail, appetizer and dessert. My cocktail was the Winterfell with Absolut Vodka, cranberry, lemon jucie and grenadine. I tried the Burrata and Spiced Sweet Potato Bruschetta for the appetizer.My friend ate the Winter Salad and Wild Mushroom Risotto and enjoyed everything. For my entree, I decided to get the Braised Short Rib Bourguignon. This could have been so much better, but the potatoes were super watery, and I feel like short rib was missing seasoning, and could have been much more flavorful. If I decide to go back, I'd really like to try the Steak Frites or the Prime New York Strip. I saw a few tables order, and it looked delicious. Overall, I'll give this restaurant 3 stars and that's only because I feel the entree could have been much better. I'd definitely give it another chance.

This is an excellent option for people staying near the theaters! We decided to come here before a showing a Hamilton and I'm so glad! The service was prompt and friendly, so we were in and out without feeling rushed! We started with cocktails which were pretty good! I would maybe order a different one next time but for not knowing what to get I was pretty satisfied We then got the deviled egg appetizer which was also amazing, followed by our entrees We chose the Stake frites and the Short rib dinner both were cooked beautifully and super flavorful! I would highly recommend this place for anyone looking for an affordable but high-class meal in Chicago!

Solid brunch spot. Came here for brunch and it wasn't very full, but we got seated right away and our server was fabulous! He was very friendly and honest about the menu with recommendations. I also really like the ambiance of the restaurant with the bar set up. Also noticed the seats were not jammed packed... I feel like that's becoming a tend for places, to cram as many people in as possible. I also really like the plates here and feel like I have to mention it. The coffee was average - tasted just like any other cup of coffee. I got the avocado toast and it was good, however I think it should be called "Ricotta Toast" considering I didn't get much avocado on it. Sad. One friend got the mushroom omelette and said the mushrooms were a bit weird and chewy. However the potatoes were good! My two other friends got the chicken and waffles and both loved it. I tried a bite and think I should have ordered it too because it was soooo good. Waffles were fluffy, chicken was moist and crispy. Overall it wasn't outstanding, but also not disgusting. Solid 3/5 stars for this place.

Came to dinner with my mom and we got the salmon and spaghetti surf clam. The salmon is really good, they asked how we want it cooked which was new for me. It was really good I loved the veggies it came with and the crunchy crust. The spaghetti on the other hand, was not good. It just had too many things going on, the capers and the olives and tomatoes, the flavors didn't go together/ blend. And it only 3 clams. Definitely NOT worth the 31 dollars. Very disappointing. We also got the cuban smash drink and that was yummy. Staff is very nice, food doesn't drag.

After having been disappointed by our experience at the State and Lake Chicago Tavern, the GM reached out and asked for another chance. I am very glad we did. We originally chose this restaurant because it was within walking distance from the theatre district. Once again, our dinner reservation was at 5:30, as the curtain was 7:30 at the Goodman Theatre. This time --- We were greeted warmly and seated immediately. The energetic ambience was welcoming, as was the GM, chef and server. Our salads were fresh, colorful and ample. Our main courses were excellent and came out of the kitchen hot. Food was below average and the host was drunk. Also, watch out for them they bill incorrect so I advised to pay in cash.
