It was pretty empty, not sure if people know about it. They have free parking, a great view and location. Pretty friendly staff but order and take yourself to the table so no waitress/waiter. They offer some limited alcohol drinks. We had a sharable plate, the brisket was pretty good! The cornbread was amazing. I think it is a hidden gem!

The meat Sampler was solid. The rib tips were good. Nicely smoked, tender and juicy. The pickles were tasty, famous Dave esque. The brisket and pull pork were just ok. The sausage I did not like. Not good imo. I had the regular BBQ sauce which was solid and this vinegar type which I was not a fan of. As far as sides the potatoes were good, the slaw and chicken Gumbo you can pass on. The Cornbread was a winner of your into sweet bread. That said it's an ok place, might go I a pinch, but no special visit.

The food here, is just okay. Nothing to wow about The brisket is average, not very juicy either. The sauce that comes with it is quite good tho! Mac and cheese was bland but I did enjoy the mashed potatoes! Service was nice, there was no one else in the venue when I went. Also this place is impossible to find, they need more signage for sure. I probably won't be back. I wasn't impressed.

Great atmosphere and lovely setting and seating. Food is a bit salty and pricey but the Mac and cheese, cornbread, and collards were tasty. Staff were nice. You can sit in a quiet space over looking the water and marina and then also get a beer at the next door brewery or Metropolitan Taproom. Or you can go to the distillery called Judson & Moore next door. Dogs are allowed on leashes here and there a lot of space. Also free parking both for the stores area and in the street. Enjoy!

(Transparency: I took this photo in 2023 before Metropolitan Brewing closed.) Soul and Smoke creates AMAZING barbecue food that you wouldn't expect from Chicago. Their location is a small section of a hallway in the Rockewell on the River building, so it's easy to miss from the outside. My family loves barbecue, and we grabbed lunch from Soul and Smoke during a brewery outing (RIP Metropolitan). From the first bite, we were freaking out over the Brisket Mac and Cheese. The part components on their own are so freaking good - cheesy Mac and tender brisket with flavorful sauce, which makes the whole dish a rave. When my sister visited Chicago a few months later, we got the same dish from their Time Out Market location in Fulton Market, and the quality was the same! My brother greatly enjoyed their brisket sandwich, but I still think about this brisket mac!! Hopefully whoever leases the Metropolitan Brewing location next will be complementary to Soul and Smoke. Good beer and great barbecue are a perfect pair.

I've heard a lot of great things about this place, but it wasn't in evidence this visit.Admittedly their apple slaw is excellent, filled with fruit and crunchy veggies and, I think raisins? and not much mayo, so right up my alley. And their BBQ sauce is good too, at least the tiny smear of it that was present on my great mass of dry, hay-like pulled pork that was impossible to chew.The mac and cheese wasn't to my taste. I like a good baked crust. I understand not every mac has that. This didn't. It was very creamy and rich, though, with a number of cheeses in evidence, so if that's your jam, this will be.I have been informed that this is my fault for not ordering the brisket, which is what they're famous for, but I would counter with the argument that if you are a BBQ place you should also know how to cook pulled pork for the right amount of time.

I ordered the half pan of pulled pork and 1 pound of the lean and fatty brisket. The pulled pork was delicious!! It's so good and the bbq sauce is perfect in its sweetness. The half pan is 5 pounds and feeds about 12 people. The brisket was not too bad. I would say the pulled pork is the best here! Great service too. I ordered by phone at the Evanston location and they were able to connect with the Avondale location to put in the order for me since their website said everything was sold out but it really wasn't. I really appreciated their service and the employee at the Avondale location even walked with me to the door to open it for me bc my hands were full. FYI, it is more on the pricey side and I ordered here bc I had a gift card. I heard they are opening a location in west loop! Yay!

Went here on a cold and empty Sunday and was very suprised how good everything was...I got the meat sample platter with collard greens,Mac & cheese and everything was delicious. The beef brisket was beautifully cooked and actually better than other BBQ joints in Chicago like Green Street Meats and Smoque. The rib tips were juicy and meaty and the pulled pork was amazing...My only complaint is that the food wasn't very hot but I understand how BBQ is cooked and served and this is a complaint I have with just about all BBQ spots I've had across the USA. It's usually served at room temp unless you get to BBQ joint right when meats come off the grill.Overall this is some real deal BBQ and the sauce is fantastic...I bought a bottle to go.I will be back.
