I had bookmarked this restaurant recently when a friend posted delectable photos of all of my favorite dishes. Living in the bay area, good & authentic Lao food is hard to come by so we always look for a good spot when we're in San Diego.Everything we tried was outstanding and more than satisfied our long cravings (pad see ew, lao sausage, papaya salad, fish wraps, nam khao, etc). The space is so warm and inviting and I love the decor and even the presentation of the food.We came twice while we were in town last week and the good food was enough to make us regulars, but allow me a few minutes to explain why we will be customers for life.We were in town preparing services for my dad, who had just passed away. By chance, my mom told me that she and my dad had been regulars at this restaurant before he had moved into the nursing home earlier this year. On our second visit, we brought more family in for lunch and Carrie and her husband stopped by our table to ask about dad. Upon learning of his passing, they not only shared stories about him which brought us closer to his memory, but also subsequently attended the funeral and brought food for us and other mourners. To say that we are touched would be a gross understatement. We are forever grateful for So Saap for their generosity, support and of course, making sure my dad had his usual Saturday table when he stopped in for spicy papaya salad, lao sausage & sticky rice.

I love So Saap! Service is quick and the ambiance is cute. We've been here a couple times just for the sugar cane, which is delicious. I like the plain sugar cane and the sugarcane with calamansi. We've tried some of the food too. I loved the pad Thai with chicken. We ordered the Laos Famous Plate, which I thought was just okay, but my friend really liked it. We tried the Lao Pho, which was just alright. I'm excited to come back and try their other food!

Too hot to eat inside and it's summer at 85 degrees outside. No aircon just electric fans. And a lot of flies inside. :( The service is slow only 1 server. The food is okay. We ordered chicken and the famous Laotian plate. The jerky was too hard to bite it's overcooked. The sausage has chilis insides so if you have a low tolerance in spicy food don't order this.

I've been wanting to dine since they were in their other location. First impression, decor is great. Instead of barstools they have swings at the bar. Plenty of booth seating. Our main server got a few of our orders wrong, took phone calls mid taking our order. She was never rude, just seems like her mind was elsewhere.Food was so so. The sugar cane drink was super fresh. We loved the Pad Thai and Drunken Noodle. Tim wanted to try Thuum saap platter. We thought this would come first as an appetizer but it came after the noodles were served. We were not a fan of the papaya salad. We had asked for the Lao Papaya Salad with raw shrimp, but we got the Dark and Funky with raw crab. That fermented fish sauce was a bit much for me. And I usually love dishes with fermented fish sauce, but this was super pungent. We wanted to have mango with sticky rice for dessert and we were so excited for it. But the server came back to let us know they had ran out. So then we asked for fried banana with ice cream. Then she came back again to let us know they had ran out of honey. We could've just left but I was really craving for something sweet. In the end, it was not bad. Would we be back again? Maybe, forthe food but not for the service. At the end we had to ask another server for more to go boxes because our main one disappeared from us.

I recently dined at So Saap Thai restaurant in San Diego and had an incredible experience. I ordered the Drunken Noodle, Khao Gee Sticks, and Dragonfruit-Cane, and each dish surpassed my expectations. The Drunken Noodle was a highlight, boasting perfectly cooked noodles with just the right amount of chewiness. The blend of flavors was exquisite, with the right balance of spice, sweetness, and savory elements. The fresh vegetables and tender pieces of meat added depth to the dish, making every bite a delight. The Khao Gee Sticks were a fantastic starter. Crispy on the outside and delightfully chewy on the inside, these rice sticks were seasoned to perfection. They came with a dipping sauce that complemented them beautifully, adding a zesty kick that made them irresistible. To top off the meal, I had the Dragonfruit-Cane drink. It was refreshingly light and had a natural sweetness that was both satisfying and thirst-quenching. The dragonfruit provided a unique and vibrant flavor, making it a perfect companion to the savory dishes. The ambiance of So Saap Thai was warm and inviting, and the service was impeccable. The staff was attentive and knowledgeable, ensuring a pleasant dining experience. Overall, So Saap Thai offers a memorable culinary journey, and I highly recommend it to anyone looking to enjoy authentic Thai cuisine in San Diego.

I love So Saap with all my heart. This location's interior is very modern and beautiful. It is a bit warm inside despite the air conditioning being on. Nonetheless, a really nice vibe. The menu is big and at first glance a bit daunting for someone like me who hasn't had much Lao or Thai food, but the person who helped me was really helpful and suggested I get the plate with jerky, sausage, and papaya salad. The sticky rice that came with the meal was hot and perfectly chewy. I finished that meal with some sweet sticky rice with mango which was truly delectable. On a separate visit I got the lemongrass wings which were incredibly crispy and aromatic.

I was craving some Lao food so I decided to try this place out. Ambiance is cute and casual. Our waitress was very helpful since it was our first time. FOOD:Nam Khao - Felt it was a bit lackluster. This is one of my all time favorite dishes so I've had it many times growing up. I wish the rice was more prominent in the dish and the flavor was just not there for me. I did enjoy how crispy it was and the cured pork added a nice tanginess. Portion size was generous which I appreciated. Laos Famous Plate - This is great if you want to try multiple things but don't want to order a bunch of dishes. Highlights were the Lao sausage and papaya salad. The fried meatballs and Seen Savanh were okay.

So delicious! I love Lao & Thai places. Not the best Lao place in SD but I'll definitely come back here. They do have some of the best sugar cane drinks and pad see ew I've tried. We also really enjoyed the spare ribs and jerky. All the food came out as expected. They informed that spice level three was very very spicy however, three out of four of us in our group did not feel so (we have a regular-high spice tolerance when compared to people who regularly eat hot salsas/sriracha, etc). But I do think level 3 is perfect to get that quick and not need a drink of water. Very affordable pricing. Love the gold plates. Only bummer is the parking is pretty tight on the weekends. I felt very rushed as we were ordering, and the waitress didn't even asked me what I wanted to drink. She left right after I ordered my main entrées. Because she was such in a rush, she missed my order of sticky rice and actually got our rice order wrong all together. The other couple in our group had to wait 10 more minutes just to get the rice after our entrees were delivered.

SOOOOO mouthwateringly delicious (so saap!). So Saap is one of my favorite spots, especially for their amazing nam khao (fried rice salad) and seen lod (beef jerky). They are consistently delicious every time, with the textures and flavors that keep you coming back, mouthful after mouthful. Make sure you eat the nam khao with the lettuce for the full experience. Every other dish has been fantastic as well! I try to try one new dish each time and I've never left disappointed! I love that they play 2000's hip hop and r&b here as well. Overall So Saap is one of my favorite Thai/Lao spots in SD and you need to come in!

We came here to satisfy our sugarcane craving and decided to try out some dishes! We got the Tom Khem (tender pork & very flavorful dish, but too salty), Laos Famous plate (overcooked, chewy meats and immensely spicy papaya salad) and dragonfruit/ coconut cane juices. The sugarcane juices were delightfully refreshing & naturally sweet, though we thought the added dragonfruit & coconut made no difference and it was half+ filled with ice (but imo that's typical of sugarcane drinks). The food took a while once our order was placed, but we noticed there were only a few staff present and multiple to-go orders. As we were leaving, we saw a staff member fresh press the sugarcane, it's no wonder our drinks tasted so fresh!
