You have got to be kidding! I come to Yelp searching for "best reuben sandwich near me" to come up with Mattern's as top rated, so I drive 5.5 city miles to get it. After all, I want the best. I go to order window and ask for a reuben to go only to hear "I'm sorry but we're out of rye bread, but I can make you one on a french roll".#1 A highly rated deli out of rye bread???? Are you kidding me?#2 A highly rated deli will even suggest making a reuben on a french roll??Don't waste your time coming here.

Mattern is the jam!This place is no frills, it's just a tiny little store with a few tables and a good selection of German groceries. The people who work here are always friendly and eager to help and answer any questions you have.Their sandwiches are amazing. The fried pork chop is my favorite, my husband loves their rueben. The rolls they use are so delicious. The sandwiches are very large too, we always split one or take 1/2 home for the next day. Their homemade sausages though, are what keep me coming back! Their Fresh Bratwurst and British Bangers are fantastic. Sooooo juicy and flavorful. They have a unique selection, like the Swedish Potato Bratwurst, which is something I had never heard of before - it was interesting to try! I can't wait to purchase more of the varieties they offer. They sell them fresh and frozen, I like buying the frozen ones and keeping them stocked in my freezer for easy dinners.

Best German deli and market in OC. Good beer selection too. We have German friends who visit and approve of the quality and authenticity of their food. Great sandwiches, selection of cheese and sausages.

The sandwiches were pretty decent, and the fact that they carry so many beloved German brands gave me extreme nostalgia. This place is definitely a neat find.I think my boyfriend ordered the Reuben with the Kielbasa inside, but not 100% sure. I had the pastrami, and liked how everything was packaged. The sandwiches were massive! I need to come back and try more things, as well as buy more German products.They don't have an extensive dairy section, but they have sweets, meats, and some other snacks and condiments. They did have the sweet ground mustard I love, as well as bunch of gummies and chocolates.However, they did not have Grießpudding, which is one of my favorites and very, very difficult to find. Unless I was blind and missed it, but it's like how they don't really sell quark here in the States. I'd also be filled with joy the day they start selling Beck's Ice and Kleiner Feigling here, as well as Pril.

High quality meats. Especially enjoy their sausages and cold cuts. Staff is very friendly.

Everythng 100% authentic!Cold cuts, breads and all the other items on the multible shelves is from the "Old World" and doesn't contain the "usual" american "additives"!!!I'm from Austria and should know!

My Mom use to take me here when I was young. A few weeks ago I found out it was still in business so I had to take my family. Everyone loved it. The sausage is delicious and the bread is a perfect crunch and softness. Make sure you try the meat salad. Sounds strange but it is yummy. My Mom use to put it in my lunches for school. Still tastes the same.

It doesn't get more authentic than this. Not sure how long I have been shopping here after moving from Germany in 1995 but it's been over 2 decades.Love the atmosphere. Especially during the holidays as usually everyone, including customers, knows what to expect during this time.I can't think of 1 item I have tried and not liked. Everything in the deli counter is delicious and tastes 'just like home'. The beer selection is exceptional.You can find some true gems in the dry goods section. Some of those items are rather expensive but worth it to reminisce. Thanks to the staff for always being kind and friendly. Hope you made it ok through the holidays. I'll be back soon.

Staff very helpful, friendly and know the products. Lots of cold cuts and other items you can't find in a grocery store. Their smoked pork is outstanding.
