A pic says a thousand words...even if its mostly about not wanting to be there.

So it starts with coming out of the Detroit Bar. Eyes adjusting to all the neon lights to all of the store which are closed and I focus on "24 hrs" and "doughnuts."Add angry asian man who does NOT want to be there...and one damned tasty apple fritter. I may never crave a doughnut but I will definitely be back.Picture to follow, as it really does speak for itself.

They're open 24/7 and within a good walk/bike distance to my place. How awesome is that! I told myself that I would try their donuts one of these mornings on my way to work and I finally sung by. They have donuts galore! Regular donuts are .65cents and an apple fritter, bigger more deliciously sinful donuts are roughly 1dollar or a little more. It blows some more expensive places out of the water. Sweet, soft, warm and scrumptious goodness. The only bad thing .. my waistline.

I don't know if any of you have experienced pure happiness, but please allow me to describe it to you. You have several vodka tonics and a couple of coronas and dance the night away at Detroit Bar. 1:30 hits, last call is called, and you stumble out of the bar and shield your eyes from all the lights from the strip mall around you. Until, shining like a beacon in the night, your eyes focus and you see the sign: "Donuts." Holy sweet goodness, nothing on earth sounds better than a fried circle of dough...until you get to the window and you realize one thing does sound better: Apple Fritter. Wow. And I thought carne asada burritos were the food of the drunken gods, the apple fritters from this place have replaced them. It would appear that they sell sandwiches and such, but it's those fritters that really rev my motor after a drunken night at Detroit.

Say what? After reading multiple glowing reviews on yelp and special write up in the OC weekly, I made a special stop here one afternoon for a sammy (yes, I know sandwiches well enough to call them by a nickname)But I was pretty underwhelmed. News flash, all food tastes better when drunk and or high. Please yelp accordingly. It's not like it was a bad sandwich, but I know doughnut shops with better. And it was a little weird that this was not just a doughnut and sandwich shop, but also an "old fashioned" ice cream parlor (I guess by old fashioned they mean by the scoop?) and filtered water dispensary. The turkey meat was of the slimy, processed type. The lettuce, shredded. The bread - a soft french roll. It was big enough for two people to share. It was a decent sandwich, but not an "amazing" sandwich, nor even a sandwich i would go out of my way for unless drunk. Del taco is amazing when drunk... as im sure this place is too. but when sober, not so much.

This is truly a Costa Mesa Culinary pitstop on a dateworthy lunch outting. I really think Anthony Bourdain would like it. Holla LA streety ethicky food! His words, not mine.....But seriously, this place is awesome even if you get shitty service. I have yet to try the famously yelped apple fritters, but I know they have the most amazing ham and cheese croissant i have ever tried. Like not maybe one-upping real French ones but they are pretty fantastic. They keep getting better and better tasting that the last one I had. And I wasn't even drunk!!! What the hell is in that cheese? And they DO you just the right amount of ham perfectly sliced and in quantity and i guess, tasty quality. I dont really even like ham. And the croissant! Its good but I've had amazing straight up croissants. It all just goes together....if your brave and handle yo "ham and chee cwossant", ask for the one with jalepenos. It's my own personal favorite and mouth torture. I really wished I had a donut right now, though....

Best donut store coffee I've had in a while. it's super cheap too. They also make a jalapeno ham & cheese croissant which is so good. Try the late night window when you're wasted after a long night out at Detroit. It's also connected to a water & ice cream shop? So random but that's what makes it fun.

I personally would not recommend this place for their subs. I used to come here before they closed the subs down. $4.75 would get you a large, I would brag about this place. It was huge and completely packed with fresh ingredients. I went today because I was so excited to see it reopened. Sadly, I was disappointed. $6.25 for a skinny sub that was very lightly filled. The ingredients were fresh I might add though. I understand that with time, prices go up, but at least make a good sub. For a couple more cents, I would recommend to walk across the street to Big Belly Deli. That's where I'll continue to go for a good sandwich.

Bad, bad just so bad in a good way........... So, it's late and my friend mentioned coming here... Sure, I see and smell this place all the time when I am at Detroit or Avalon but I never made a trip here... So, when he suggeseted that we split something I gave in......... Ok, it was good.. I took a bite of an apple fritter or was it a cinnamon roll... Can't remember now. Only that I had a bite or maybe two and I couldn't anymore. I left him the rest.. Fried dough is just so wrong......... I have to watch my figure you know and consuming these things are just a no no.....
