3.5 starsA no frills budget friendly kinda AYCE spot that serves Vietnamese inspired marinated meats. We came during a weekday and Saturday lunch and both times we were the only patrons. I enjoyed this spot more for their hot pot. They only offer half pho broth and Tom yum broth and both were very tasty. Come on the weekend for more hot food items. If you're expecting a typical Korean BBQ kind of experience, this spot probably isn't for you. Their grills are covered in foil and they give you oil or butter? to squirt on it when grilling. The dipping sauce station has a lot of Vietnamese sauces.

For my mama's 85th birthday, we let her choose the spot, and of course, she picked 98 Shabu & Grill Seafood AYCE. And honestly, who am I to argue? She's 85 and can do whatever she wants. I'm just literally here for the moral support. The place was a smorgasbord of international chaos--Vietnamese, Korean, Chinese, Thai, and chicken wings (because why not?). It's like a United Nations of food, all piled onto one giant buffet. Without any sense of law and order what so ever. The grill? More like a heated surface covered in foil--definitely not for that smoky Korean BBQ taste we were hoping for. The shabu pots had Tom Yum and Pho broth, which was mid-- at best. But hey, my mom loved it. She could pick any meat or veggie she wanted, and that's basically her dream come true.Would I go back? Sure, for mama. But if it's just me, alone with my thoughts and my own free will? Hard pass. Everything was... ehhhh. Just like my dating life. But as long as mama's happy, I'm happy.

I so badly wanted to like this place because it's a shabu place that also has BBQ but unfortunately I wouldn't even call it BBQ. For "BBQ" they have you grill your food at the table on an aluminum plate that's wrapped in aluminum foil. No actual grill so you don't get that grill taste. The shabu broths were decent. They offer a Pho broth and a Tom Yum broth. The flavors enhance as you cook meat and veg in. The food on the buffet didn't look the most appetizing though. The restaurant was pretty empty for a Saturday night. Because of that I wasn't sure how long things had been on the buffet line since there wasn't much turn over. At least the staff was nice and the variety of options was available. They just really need to work on improving their quality.

Was here over the weekend with a party of 7. I would have given a good review,, but found the quality of the dessert and practice so wrong. Firstly,, the desseet (chè đậu xanh) was definitely badly spoiled. Everyone at our table observed it. You don't even have to eat it, you can smell the fowl odor. When we brought it up to the cashier, she creatively remarked that it was a special banana flavor from Vietnam.. Come on, you can fool people who may not be familiar with this dessert but not Vietnamese Americans. Magically, 10 minutes later, a new bowl was replaced and it tasted fine. Secondly, beware of deceiving receipt total. The restaurant charges tax on top of the tip. This is unethical practice. Tax should be charged on the total cost of the meal only. When we brought it up to the cashier, the lady said that is automatically charged by the owner!

I don't know if my taste has changed or if something is different about this restaurant. I've been a regular here for a long time, but I returned after almost two years, and everything is different. The broth and the marinated BBQ are very different. I'm considering not coming back because all the food was bland in flavor.Another disappointment was that my bowl was super dirty.

We've host big family gatherings here a few times because there's never a wait even on Sunday afternoons. There's a variety of cooked Vietnamese dishes to eat right away and raw items to cook in your hot pot or grill. Everyone gets a 2 broth combo of pho and tom yum. The broths were actually really good and flavorful. Service was great! Everyone was so nice and accommodating of our big group but unfortunately food wasn't too good. All of the cooked food items were cold. There weren't any thin beef slices for the hot pot. There was only thin pork. I did enjoy the nice variety of noodle choices though. The buffet area was very narrow and cramped. Hard to get around people. The grills were not non-stick like at KBBQ. They were in fact especially sticky even with oil which made cooking hard. We also ordered sugar cane juice and they tasted watered down. Also one time when I was at the buffet, an uncle came out of the kitchen, cut in front of me and used the tongs to grab some food, transferred it to his hands, ate it, then walked back in the kitchen. It was weird lol. Service was great but there's lots of room for improvement.

Coming back almost two years later, 98 Shabu+Grill continues to be a really good AYCE shabu-shabu restaurant with a self-serve Korean barbeque. We came on a Thursday late morning for their weekday lunch which is now $21.99 (M-F 11-3pm). The table has 4 places for individual hot pot (induction heaters)...two of them at our table didn't work well. You grab all your meats, vegetables, and sauces from the a self-serve buffet. Even though it was lunch, they still had a lot of seafood options. They even had hot food options available, like salt/pepper blue crab. They also did a nice job of keeping our water glasses full and clearing our dirty dishes. We had a good time.
