I had ordered the spicy salmon and salmon poke bowl with white rice and spring salad mix, topped it with crunchy onion (so addicting), edamame and cucumber, spicy Mayo and Hawaiian island dressing. My co worker had the same order as mine. I had ordered a dessert but they ran out of it and asked if I wanted something else in replacement. I said sure, I'm happy they solved the issue with replacing it with another item. The smallPortion was super packed and topped with goodies! Worth the money. They had a lot of smoothies and drinks to choose from. I have attached a menu. The restaurant was clean. They had a lot of seating inside and outside. I am definitely returning again."

They even have Dole whip. They place is small and modern but they have outdoor seating only. The staff are helpful and friendly. They have a very good selection of proteins even grilled chicken, can you believe that? I like that they have a mixed ahi flavor. We custom made ours. They have a machine that pre-makes their seaweed rice wrapper. My son custom made his poke bowl. I also liked that they had roasted garlic as well as onions. Prices are very decent. Would definitely come back here again. [60R,2023]"

Evan K. "This place is so RAW and serves fantastic authentic poke from the mainland! I have tried a few spots when visiting San Diego, and this one is my favorite. In my opinion, they might be better than Hawaiian Fresh, another San Diego poke spot. We arrived late in the afternoon, and there was street parking, but I could see this street getting busier later in the day. There was also a decent line out the door, but it went by quickly. They have a small storefront with drinks and snacks to pair with your poke. Near the cashier, they have all the poke-in trays. Their Spicy Ahi and Furikake Salmon were amazing. The Spicy Ahi was creamy and had just the right amount of spice. The Furikake was similar to a teriyaki sauce. I just got rice for the sides, but I tried out their mac salad, which had stringy noodles, and I loved it. Next time, I'm getting one side of rice and mac salad with my poke plate. I wish they had given a more significant portion of food and more furikake. I would rather have them put it all over the rice, similar to other places, but I understand people enjoy different portions."

Sue Z. "AHMAZZZZZING POKE. This is definitely my new favorite poke spot in SD. Found street parking a block away on a Saturday around 12:30ish. My boyfriend tried to come here on a Friday at around 3pm and they were sold out. They close shop once they sell out so definitely go early! There's not a lot of seating, about 4 counter height chairs inside and 2 tables outside but most customers take it to go. Staff was really friendly and helpful. I got the $19 large which comes with 3 scoops of poke and added a side of shrimp tempura (comes with 2) for additional $3. Suuuuuper worth the price for the amount of food I got and fresh quality! The 3 scoops of poke I got:- Creamy scallop salmon masago (10/10) OMG where has this been my whole life?! Perfect for salmon and scallop lovers. No other poke spot has this combo and it works out perfectly well. Hope they never take this option away.- Shiso wasabi yellowtail (9/10): The wasabi was subtle and I really enjoyed this. Was thinking maybe a tad of ginger would enhance the flavor but still great overall.- Kali ahi tuna (8/10): This was creamy and definitely a common flavor at other poke shops as well. I appreciate how they added 2 slices of fresh avocado to top it off instead of mixing chunks of avocado in with my poke.I really wanted to try the miso black garlic salmon but unfortunately it was sold out by around 12:45pm! I love how they include some kani, seaweed salad, and spicy tuna with my large poke. White rice is the only option available for the base. Wished they offered a mac salad or green salad option but that's not a deal breaker for me. We loved the poke so much that we bought 2 containers of poke to go. Will definitely be back!"

The service was great. Multiple servers were ready to take our orders first the way. I ordered a regular poke bowl. I really liked that they have many flavored "dressed" poke options, comparing to the typical poke places that have mostly non flavored fish then asked you for the sauces. I tried their spicy tuna, kimchi tako, and F&T mix. Plenty of topping options. I really enjoyed my poke bowl. The large bowl is a really good deal that my parents shared and enjoyed it too. I came here around 6 pm on Friday night, and it was basically empty but I would imagine they are busier during the week with college kids. They have small and large bowls and I ordered small, and my husband got the large bowl. You can do the add-on cucumber, furikake, etc , but seaweed salad and some other things were extra $. I had albacore, spicy tuna, and yellowtail. They tasted fresh and it was tasty. My husband was pretty happy with his choice too. Jenn R. "New place, who 'dis? Finally made my way to their new location and it's looking great! All bright and shiny; I especially got a kick out of the floor looking like fish scales (I see what you did there). There's some tables inside, but you want to be outdoors where that San Diego sun hits right. As per usual, I ordered a poke plate with three scoops. - Spicy Salmon | Love the little spice kick added to this poke. This goes without saying (again), but the salmon is incredibly tender and just feels like it melts in your mouth. Highly recommend. - Garlic Salmon | I've talked about this before in my previous Yelp review, but this poke mixture is comprised of their silky soft salmon with bits of garlic and crunchy sweet onions. Sesame oil is massaged in and gives it that nutty, earthy flavor. It's one of my favorites. - Shoyu Ahi | A little more firm than the salmon, but still tender nevertheless. The thin slices of onion give it a nice contrasting crunch. I also bought an excessive amount of cookies who are made by a company called Caked, which is not too far from HFS (8680 Miralani Drive Ste. 129, San Diego, CA 92126). I have a more detailed review at their own Yelp page, but the gist of it is that there's some pretty unique cookies to try out. One of my favorites is the Matcha Green Tea cookie, but all time favorite is Birthday Cake cookie."

The Bowl Ramen & Izakaya

The Bowl Ramen & Izakaya

★★★★★ 4.5 (41)

Emmett T. "Not a very intuitive name, but The Bowl is a new ramen shop and izakaya that has opened in the former space of an OB sushi restaurant. The owners are the same as The Joint which is at the end of the block but on the opposite corner. What struck me when you walked in was the inordinate number of maneki-neko (beckoning cats) that adorned the interior. Not only were these Japanese figurines lined up at the bar, but they were also present on a giant plaque along the right wall and above the bar near the ceiling. Their presence is supposed to bring good luck to the owner, however this felt like overkill as there were more than 100 of these cat statues with a raised left arm.The menu featured five styles of ramen and four rice bowls on the first page. The other page listed the cold and hot izakaya items and desserts. The bone broth for the ramen contained pork and chicken which was cooked in-house for 16 hours. I chose the Chicken Gyoza to start my meal. The pan fried dumplings came as six pieces filled with minced chicken and veggies. A spicy dipping sauce was provided in the middle of the dish. They had a decent crunch to them. The House Ramen with extra noodles was my entree choice. Pork chashu, aji tama (1/2 soft-boiled marinated egg), menma (marinated bamboo shoots), bean sprouts, and negi (green onions) were the other components in the bowl. Despite the long preparation time, the broth lacked umami and needed more seasoning. The four chashu pieces were chewy and not as tender as I have eaten elsewhere.Even without the additional noodles, the price was expensive. Three of the five ramen (including the veggie version) cost more than $20 which is above the local market standard. Maybe the price was higher because there is less competition in OB. The service was decent although I felt that more attention was paid if you sat at the bar versus one of the tables. I moved over to an empty bar stool after initially picking one of the four-top tables."

"I finally decided to give this place a shot and overall felt it was just OKAY.I am used to the extremely friendly and clean Poke 1+1/2 (north park/convoy), whom offer free (even double) scoops of avocado and yellowtail is the same cost.Overall felt this bowl was smaller than those I've tried in the past. First impression: The air was nice and breezy outside, maybe 75º and when I walked in, it felt like 90º which grossed me out for a fish place. It was half poke restaurant, half swap meet. They had a random assortment of electronics and random boots for sale like a yard sale. Felt it was a little gross lol. The lady working was very short and not overly friendly. Felt like she wanted me to pick quick so I could leave (and keep in mind I already knew what I wanted). Overall the rice was very good and the fish was fine, not sure how trustworthy/fresh it was, but knocking stars because the place seemed unkept and way too hot for comfort- maybe they should open the door for circulation? Also knocking another star because for 75cents I received two TINY slivers of avocado extra. I had an avocado at home and ended up adding it to my bowl. Plus yellowtail does not cost more at other poke places.Anyway. Not bad, but weird experience. If they clean up their location/turn on the AC/open the door for air, I'd give it another shot."

Calvin N. H. "If you have never had a Poki bowl, I think it's a must try for anyone that likes sushi, fish, or ceviche. From what I read long ago about it, it is a Hawaiian dish with Japanese influence. It's typically cut up/cubed raw fish mixed with sauce served with rice and/or greens and other toppings to complete the deliciousness. To start, you select the size you want and based on that they give you a certain amount of scoops of fish or other protein.Small - 2 scoops ($15.95 as of Feb 2024)Regular - 3 scoops ($16.95 as of Feb 2024)Large - 4 scoops ($17.95 as of Feb 2024)You select a base: white rice, brown rice, mixed greens, quinoa (add $1.00) or half and half. I usually get mixed greens and brown rice. Then you select your proteins. I usually go with salmon, tuna, and scallops. They also have shrimp, a Cali mix, minced lobster, spicy tuna, tofu, octopus, chicken, and chickpea. You select your sauce: original poki, hot poki, fire poki, ponzu, spicy mayo, wasabi mayo, or yuzu pepper. I usually go with fire poki. I have heard people mix sauces, but I usually stick to one. Then they mix your sauce(s) with your protein in a separate bowl and place it on top of your base. The last thing you select are toppings: seaweed salad, edamame, jalapenos, krab meat (I think it's imitation), white onions, green onions, seaweed flakes, ginger, carrots, corn, crunchy garlic and/or sesame oil. I order toppings based on what I feel like having, but everything is good. The poki bowls are good. Service used to be the worst thing here, but I think those employees have been replaced. Service is consistently good now. Lots of drink options and fountain drinks. Not a ton of seating, but people are usually in and out after eating.Parking is usually okay unless you are here during peak hours. If that's the case, you might have trouble finding parking.I'm glad I gave this location another chance. The suite was located next to the movie theater in the Rancho San Diego Towne Center which meant parking was not an issue. The seating capacity was less than 50 customers which included the countertop adjacent to the kitchen preparation area. Ramen, sushi, and poke were featured, however I wanted noodles for my meal which is what this review will be about. You started by choosing one of three meats (beef, pork, chicken) before deciding on one of six types of broth. Beef as a protein for a ramen bowl was a rarity. I chose pork, but unfortunately my top two picks for broth (Hybrid Black, Fish) were unavailable so I settled for the Premium Shoyu. Each order included a soft boiled egg, green onions, bean sprouts, garlic chips, corn, red ginger, and seaweed. I excluded the garlic chips but included the rest of the toppings. The bowl took a while to be prepared even though it was not particularly busy. After waiting around 15 minutes, I received my food which was a reasonable portion size for the price tag. The slices of pork were a disappointment as the meat was chewy and not melt in your mouth soft as I have tasted elsewhere. The remaining components were fine. For the quality of the ramen product I tried, my rating of Hyshinu was a middle of the road three stars."

He was at the register checking someone out and came over to us to tell us that the card reader was down and they were only accepting cash; we said no problem. We placed have our order, and between making the two bowls, a second employee came out to finish making them and the first employee went back to register - he then came back a few minutes later to tell us the card reader was down and confirmed we were paying cash and then asked to see out cash. Showed him we had cash and he let the other employee finish making our order. We get to the register and the employee who asked to see our cash gives us a total. We pay him in cash but did not get our change; the employee said they do not have any cash on hand. One of our bowls was more expensive than the other (no extras were added), when asked about it the employee said "that's the price". The prices listed do not match other menus and marketing materials, and in four different places we found conflicting prices with a $2-$4 difference depending on which item you looked at.
