Sheryl M. "So I'm writing this review, giggling to myself, because I just finished responding to several friends about why the "Pink Velvet" Cheesecake I had, was green. Joyce W. had one theory, and I had another. But in the end, I think we were both wrong? I'll get back to this later.Well, Cake Envy is located on Bethel St. directly across from the Hawaii Theater. The inside is nice. Roomy with a high ceiling and decorated with trendy wall art and knick knacks. Large windows makes for good people watching entertainment in Downtown. These guys have been making cheesecakes for a long time, and through some of the reviews I've read, they have about 60 different varieties. The flavors in the showcase changes every so often, so don't expect to see the same ones on every visit. Although I prefer the classic plain cheesecake, the other ones her are pretty good too. They're not so dense, but creamy with the right amount of sweetness. Recently, they've begun selling Gelato! Who doesn't love that? Best of both worlds under one roof! Getting back to that "Pink" Velvet cheesecake, I know it exists because I saw Amy Y's picture to prove it! Hers was pink pink. Not wannabe pink like mine. Yet, it tasted like "Pink" Velvet. I guess. It was good...but I actually believe that 1) the wrong sign was placed in front of the wrong cheesecake, or 2) I got leftovers from St. Patrick's day. Hopefully, it was my first guess. Hmm... Perhaps it was Pistachio? Guess I'll never really know.Regardless, I'm still a fan of Cake Envy. Street parking only so be prepared."

I came with my friend who was visiting from out of town. I got the matcha with whole milk and a pastry filled with cream. The pastry was not too sweet but quite flaky. The matcha was ok. They have flowers for sale by the stem as well."

Patisserie Melanie

Omar S. "Where do great chefs come from?Chef Melanie Dunn is not a TV cook or game show participant, so she doesn't produce whiz-bang, "look what I can do," flavor-free Insta-cuisine. Chef Melanie holds the Diplôme de Pâtisserie from Le Cordon Bleu in Paris, and she respects and builds on traditional ideas, processes and results. She's a marvelous cook, which requires training and innate ability, but muscle memory and talent will only carry a person as far as they can see. The best chefs are guided by a sense of mission, and something more: raison d'être. In chatting with Chef Melanie, I've found her to be charming, humble and sincere, and, importantly, enthusiastic about her personal purpose: through her creative efforts, to inform and educate.I assume she was so motivated before Le Cordon Bleu, through the many years she taught English at San Diego's Crawford High School. I know that now, she's in the business of suggesting that we "please try this thing you've never tasted before."I've learned a lot from Melanie Dunn, so, maybe great chefs come from Crawford's English Department.**********The original Pâtisserie Melanie was tiny, just the front of the live/work space that Chef shared with her husband, Axel Schwarz (another Crawford teacher) and their child.Happily, Pâtisserie Melanie survived the burdens that COVID-19 laid onto small businesses, and in 2023, Chef moved her operation to a larger space on 30th Street, with a kitchen full of high-end baking equipment and a dining room with seating for a dozen or so lucky diners. Any changes that occurred were good ones. The menu of baked goods has expanded a bit, and the place now offers some savory dishes, as well. Chef Melanie's is a varied menu of the usual suspects, and features some surprises, too.Croissant are there, of course; the original - all tuile-crisp and buttery - and pistachio and chocolate, too. But Chef Melanie wants you to try new things, so she makes almond and rosemary croissant, and smoked paprika & cheddar, and, when you're not looking, she'll bring out a chocolate custard roll called "pepito" that will make you regret, then rethink, your diet."And since you're exploring," she'll ask, "why not try a cannelé?" - small, custard-filled caramelized tea cakes from the Bordeaux region of France, lovely bits that are one of Chef Melanie's several unexpected masterworks.Pâtisserie Melanie offers a variety of macarons in typically Parisian fashion: floral in the springtime, spiced and dusky in the fall, and light and flavorful all year 'round. What else? Cookies and caramels, preserves and tarts, croques messieurs et mesdames, and whatever comes next.**********And finally, there's Pâtisserie Melanie's best seller, my obsession, the simple Breton butter cake called "kouign-amann."But before I discuss that KA (as I'll abbreviate the name), please allow me to present my bona fides:- I've eaten KA in 27 bakeries, in 17 cities, in 12 states.- I've eaten the best KA in America, at b. Patisserie in San Francisco. It's to my detriment that theirs was the first I ever tasted, because all others will compete for the #2 spot, forever.- I once bought two KA, to go, from Manhattan's Dominique Ansel, then shot uptown to Bouchon Bakery to compare them, side-by-side, against Thomas Keller's version. I spent $70 on Uber rides so that I could evaluate $17 worth of baked goods.*When I first read that Pâtisserie Melanie mades kouign-amann (specifically, "Kouignettes", the original kouign-amann being more like a cake than the hand-held version pioneered in the Bay Area in 2010), I rushed to Hillcrest, calling ahead to ensure the shop hadn't sold them out.I liked them then, and I've enjoyed them more as time has passed. They're butter-basted layers of slightly dense croissant, their edges palmier-like, crispy, and tenderer than I'd imagined. The rest of the bite is chewy, like good Italian bread. Each mouthful is a treat, as flavors mix and meld: yeast, caramel and dairy; a wisp of cardamom; pleasant hints of cinnamon and salt. And when I crave those flavors, Pâtisserie Melanie satisfies, and though I might still do so, I no longer need to visit San Francisco for a top-quality kouign-amann.**********b. Desiree S. "Hurry, quick! I need a bakery! That was me a couple of weeks ago, looking for a bakery close by with good reviews. I found Eccentric International Chefs on Yelp, and I thought to myself, "What sort of name is that?". I mean, I appreciate eccentricity, so I figured I would give the international chefs a try.I visited on a Saturday morning, pretty early at about 7, and I met the owner, Chef Carl. I told him it was my first time there and he pointed out some goodies(pastries and cookies) that he had out for sale. They do a lot of cake here, but they also have some pretty darn good pastries. I knew what I wanted because I`m a Yelp stalker and I know ahead of time what looks good to me. I chose a filled horn, a chocolate éclair, and two of their cake/cream/jam parfaits. The shop is clean, the cakes on display creative and interesting, and I found Chef Carl to be an absolute delight. He is nice to chat with, friendly, and takes pride in his business. I also heard him answer a phone call from his wife and it was adorable. *heart eyes*Pricing is fair for the quality. The horn and éclair were delicious, learning towards the éclair being my favorite of the two. I like that the cream wasn't too sweet. It was all balanced very nicely.NOW, let me tell you about these parfaits. I had never had a cake parfait and I am a convert now from regular parfaits and regular cake. Why have either of those when you can have it all, in a cup, with a lid, to go. I dug in right when I got home because the parfaits looked very enticing. SO good. Moist(I hate that word) cake, delicious not too sweet cream, and the jam(I`m sorry if it is called something else. I am but a humble dessert consumer). I brought my mom one and also ate half of hers and I am NOT sorry.Get yourself to Chef Carl and get a parfait or two. I want to order a cake from here just because. 5/5. I will be back."

Carmen V. "Beautiful place, the ultimate pretty, clean, modern-ethnic-boho vibe, perfect terrace, facade, tables, decor. But. But please don't let this beautiful tea/coffee shop patisserie get into a public library! Please there are people who love to go to coffee shops for a drink and a conversation. For a meetup group language exchange, to play some table games...I understand the need of studying/working of looking for jobs (myself in am now unfortunately in that category). However, I don't use a coffee shop for my work search for more than an hour and here I saw every single table occupied by students/workers, except mine and then 2 girls with whom I was able to establish a conversation and exchange some sketching time. I know every business owner can do whatever they want with their business, but I still don't understand this concept and would not want to this amazing space converted into a Starbucks. Maybe adding some signage of 'table only for an hour limit' or something like that would help genuine people who would like to take another person on a date there, or mom and daughter talk, or friends gathering.I really see Muri in that sweet category. Other than that and that I would expect more than French music at the Kurdish coffee shop (more variety would be nice, even though I love French and it was lovely and melodic) the drinks were awesome (my cortado and then one of the girls offered me some of her tea and was very cardamom yummy smell). Pastries looked amazing but will do another time. Very photogenic place."

Claire D. "I've been to the liberty station location several times and liked it and mostly liked the stuff here...I got a New York style vanilla cream filled croissant and six macarons (pistachio, vanilla, salted caramel, s'more, Oreo, and passion fruit something). My daughter loved the passion fruit and s'more macarons so much she demanded we save the Oreo one for her. I got a pistachio and the salted caramel. The caramel was the superior one by far. When my daughter ate the Oreo macaron she said it "tasted weird" and was "like sand". I chased her and made her let me test it to make sure it was ok and it was not spoiled or anything but it was gritty like eating sand. Maybe they used charcoal for color?? But still, no one likes eating sand. We tossed it in the trash. The croissant was very pretty and the lamination looked beautiful, but I did not like the texture of the vanilla cream filling. It tasted strange like they used condensed milk and I was told it would keep overnight without refrigeration. I liked the croissant part but scooped out the filling for my kid who enjoyed it. So yeah....not sure what they are doing for some of their ingredients but definitely some misses in my opinion."

Luckily he filled croissants bumped Bonjour from a strong 4, to a 5!Although it was DEFINITELY on the pricier side, $34+ for 4 pastries, the filled croissant's took the cake.Parking could be a drag, so prepare to park a few blocks away, and you'll be just fine. The cream was nice but wasn't bursting with pistachio flavor. I ABSOLUTELY LOVE almond croissants, but this one was lacking that punch of almond flavor and texture.
