Emmett T. "Thaipan Kitchen is located inside the famous Pyramid on Miramar Rd. They are the sister location to Ping Yang Thai which operates a vendor booth at the Market on 8th Food Hall in National City. The suite was tiny so if you wanted to dine on-site, there were several tables scattered in the atrium on the ground level. The place is currently open on weekdays from 8:30 am to 3:00 pm. Breakfast service ends at 11:00.The menu was a blend of Filipino, Japanese, and Thai cuisines which differs from its older sibling. The diversity of offerings ranged from tocilog to musubi to karaage to tom yum soup to pad thai. The chef had to be quite skilled to be able to produce such a variety. I showed up near the end of breakfast hours and picked a Spam Musubi and the Spamsilog. The former was decent in size and priced at $3.50.The Spamsilog was a bowl of garlic fried rice topped with three pieces of Spam, two fried eggs, and green onions. A small cup of vinegar sauce was provided on the side. This was a classic Filipino breakfast item that had lots of salt and acid from the Spam and sauce, respectively. The serving size was respectable for $14.50.I always thought the Pyramid was strictly office space and never knew that an eatery was doing business there until now. Most of the neighboring suites were being renovated which made it feel empty on the main floor. From what I tried at Thaipan Kitchen, the experience was around a four star rating."

Julie B. "My friend and I have been trying to eat here forever and finally got reservations. The ordering is through a tablet but we unfortunately they didn't have any pork yakitori skewers available and they didn't have the spicy jelly fish and some other appetizers we were hoping to order. The skewers are ordered by 1 stick so you have the option to try different skewers. This is a more izakaya type of place so your skewer comes out like one at a time so it's definitely not a quick bite to eat spot. Overall, the meatball skewer was really good and flavorful along with the egg yolk dip. I also got beef, gizzard, liver and beef tongue. Those were delicious as well. Just the orders come out very slow."

The tempura was good, fried crispy and fresh! The sashimi was pretty fresh not bad. Salmon sushi was good, el fuego was nice amount of spice. There wasn't that much rice in the roll which is goodThe toro was kinda disappointing but it wasn't bad. Toro usually melts in the mouth but this one didn't....All in all not a bad place for sushi, pretty good for the price!"

Emmett T. "Domo Kitchen is a longtime Asian eatery located in the Ruffin Village of Kearny Mesa. I was running errands nearby and wanted to give them a try after driving past the business many times over the years. The dining room was empty when I arrived which wasn't a good sign. There were about twelve tables for seating, however at least four of them were filled with all kinds of clutter. They were being used as de facto storage space. That along with the marquee sign above the suite being only half illuminated gave a bad initial impression.A two-sided menu sheet listed the Chinese cuisine while a paper order slip showed the sushi offerings. There were no accompanying menu photos, only a brief description of each item on the back of the slip. The Cut Rolls were discounted by 40% while the Special Rolls were 20% off. I wish places would just list the regular price without inflating them and offering a discount to give the illusion that it's a good deal.I picked two Special Rolls (Hawaiian, Spanish) as part of my meal. The Hawaiian was made up of imitation crab, avocado, cucumber, spicy tuna, green onion, sesame seeds, and ponzu sauce. I am not sure why it was named 'Hawaiian' as there was no component that reflected Hawaii. The roll was strangely cut into 11 segments instead of an even eight or ten. That made for the thinnest pieces I have ever experienced. The Spanish consisted of imitation crab, salmon, cucumber, cilantro, green onion, lemon, and ponzu sauce. This roll was cut into ten pieces. Both rolls were pretty ordinary.I also selected two hand rolls... Eel and Spicy Scallop. The eel was the best item of the evening. The scallops were drenched with hot sauce which wasn't how I envisioned this roll to be made. The protein usually has the spicy component blended into the mix. The service was acceptable, but what led to the downgraded rating was the aspects I described in the first paragraph. It made me feel like the owners didn't care much about the appearance of Domo Kitchen."

Parking in the lot is narrow, so we parked our big rental minivan around the corner on the street. Service was attentive and friendly. We ordered udon soups ($8.50) for the kids which they devoured. Mushroom salad ($9) was really tasty. 2 pieces of amaebi (sweet shrimp, $26) was perfectly fresh and served with the heads still twitching. You've been warned! They'll deep fry them for you later. We got 5 pieces of salmon belly sashimi ($47.50). Pieces were generously sized and extremely fresh. We ordered two pieces of yellowtail belly nigiri ($9.50) and 5 pieces of regular salmon ($20). Fresh wasabi ($3.50) is a must! We also got a California roll with real snow crab ($15) and a Rainbow roll ($21). The Rainbow roll had some items you don't normally see, such as octopus. Lam B. "Robataya Oton has an interesting reservation only policy and interior layout. The unique seating arrangements made the dining experience fun but the food wasn't the most memorable. Reservations are mandatory and each party gets their own room. We had to remove our shoes off before sitting down. Besides the normal menu, they also had handwritten specials. Strangely the appetizers didn't come out prior to the entrees but anything raw or cold had priority. =ORDERED=*Uni Crispy Rice: one of their specials. The rice base had the slightest crunch and was topped with baked uni, salmon roe and shiso. This dish needed a creamy binder as it was very bland and dry. The uni itself was crumbly and tasteless. *Uni Udon: very watery. The udon should have been drained better because it diluted the sauce. There was the slightest of uni flavor but it was more creamy than anything. The udon texture was excellent but I was expecting more seafood flavor. *Scallop Cutlet: another special. The scallops could have used more seasoning but the batter was thin and crunchy. Light, tasty appetizer. *Poke Donburi: a mixture of tuna, salmon, uni and roe atop of rice. The included miso had lots of green onion and soft tofu. The fish were all pre marinated and were on the saltier side. Everything was tender albeit the quality wasn't outstanding for the price. *Dango: came with sweet soy glaze and had a satisfying chew. Nothing blew me away food wise and the prices were higher across the board compared to other restaurants. The private rooms made the experience resemble that of Japan but the food was underwhelming."

Not the best, but not the worst.I ordered the Shrimp Tempura Roll & SDSU Dream, both were nice sized and tasty. Rice was fresh, as was the tuna & salmon (on top of the SDSU Dream). My one and only complaint was that the tempura shrimp in both rolls was WAY over-cooked, dry AF and cold. Obviously they had been precooked and probably sitting around waiting to be "used". The food temp for everything else was good, however, when you bite into your roll the one thing that should NOT be cold is the tempura shrimp!! Major turn off...which is my I subtracted 2 stars. Only two tables and a couple of seats by the window are available to dine in, so we saw many customers doing takeout. The utensils and plates are also all takeout making Narumi a casual spot. Spicy Yellowtail Handroll (4/5): Convenient if you don't want to commit to a roll. The yellowtail they use was really fresh here. The spice comes from a spicy mayo so it wasn't spicy at all though.Maki Maki (3.5/5): Salmon and yellowtail are the main fish in this roll. Toppings were loaded with freshly chopped jalapeno and sesame seed. I t was a fresh tasting roll but more heavy from the cream cheese.Truck Stop Roll (5/5): Similar to the maki maki, this also contains salmon inside and yellowtail on top. I liked this one more only because the ponzu, chili oil and green onions were more cohesive toppings. Protein Rainbow Roll (5/5): Very vibrant and lots of fish and toppings in this one! It's a no rice roll so you are getting all the good stuff, shrimp, tuna, crab, salmon, yellowtail, and albacore are all included. Really delicious and does provide all the protein!Overall, I enjoyed the rolls at Narumi and found it to be very satisfying. They do get crowded at dinner time, especially on the weekends, but I've never had to wait for more than 20 minutes. All the rolls that I've had are good. We usually get 1-2 that we always get and try 1-2 things that sound interesting that day. This time, we tried the Quatro Futomaki, which was on the specials board (not listed on the menu) and the soft shell crab. I liked the Quatro Futomaki; it's a rolled up of 4 different fish, served with Kizami wasabi (yesssss! freakin love this!). The soft shell crab was also great! It was nicely battered and fried, but didn't feel that greasy. I liked that they came out slightly pumped up, whereas in many places they tend to be deflated, and when you bit into it, you get soft fluffy crab meat into your mouth. I highly recommend this dish if you like crabs. It can be very, very loud in here. It may be the layout or the structure, but it always feels like voices are enhanced inside and when you have a table of slightly intoxicated patrons, well, it can feel like you're eating in front of a loud speaker."

This place not only serves sushi but also bento boxes and other Japanese food. We went primarily for the sushi, so we got the Orange Crush roll and spider roll, as well as the sashimi salad and katsu lunch special with tempura. The orange crush roll has scallop and salmon, with lemon wedge, which is quite unique as I don't really see many rolls with citrus in it. Sadly, there is a reason - or maybe they just didn't do it well - the flavors don't mesh up. The spider roll was fairly good, but you cannot really mess it up with the soft shell and California roll base. Sashimi salad was good - lots of fresh sashimi, and the dressing is delicious too. The sashimi flavor may be masked by the dressing, however. The katsu lunch special was a bit disappointing as there was a lot of rice but not much katsu. You can get a better value ordering a la carte in this case.Service was fairly okay - we got checked up just one time, and that's about it. Fairly bare minimum, and we didn't even get a water refill."

We met up just before 6:00. When we arrived, the place was bustling, but they had space and we were quickly greeted. I was looking forward to wine or cocktails, but learned quickly that they don't have a full liquor license, so I asked for wine. I was offered red, white, or plum... which me is a good reason to skip the wine order. I ended up drinking the house nigori, which was just OK. If you like beer, it is probably a decent place to drink. The menu is huge. Unfortunately, most items were fried or creamy rolls, which are just not my favorite. I could have ordered the sashimi to avoid that, but wanted to share with my friend, so we ordered the four by four, four pieces of four types of a sushi roll. We chose that because it didn't have anything fried. It was OK. Usually, I eat all of my sushi and want more, but it just wasn't interesting, so we left some on the plate. The miso soup was pretty good. Honestly, I didn't eat much that eventing. I do want to say that the service was excellent. Our server came by regularly, and my water was regularly filled. Unfortunately, I really didn't care for the food or drinks. People talk about this place for cheap sushi, but I guess this is an example of getting what you pay for. I don't plan to return."

We usually get our order to go, since that helps with cutting down on time when you have a short lunchbreak. It also helps with your leftovers, since they do a great job of packaging things separately. My usual seems to be Nuts About Veggies, since I love peanut sauce (and peanut butter in general, lol). I usually choose fried tofu as a protein, since it's a little more interesting than the steamed stuff. The large mass of steamed veggies made 3 small meals, since I added a little extra as side dishes. I also added more chopped peanuts when I reheated it, to give it more crunch.I have also had the eggrolls before, and they're really good. My coworker reads to order drunken noodles, and seems to like those. It's a little pricey (3 entrees cost us almost $50), but it's high quality. And if you're paying cash, you can get a peach iced tea for free.It located right next to the 805, so you have to make a u-turn to access the shopping center if you're heading West on Clairemont Mesa Blvd. The center has several other restaurants like STP, and Ma's House."

Surfing Chef Maruyama has branched out from his roots at Taka Sushi to open Sushi MARU on the ground level of the Stanza Little Italy building in the Cortez Hill neighborhood. The sushi bar could seat 10 diners and had two dinner seatings each night from Wednesday to Sunday. Reservations can be made using Tock. Twenty courses plus dessert were served over two plus hours at a cost of $180 per person which was on par with the local competition. My visit occurred within the first week of the grand opening. The bar setup was simple yet elegant like each of the SD omakase experiences I have tried so far. One diner on the opposite end had a few food allergies which made me wonder why he chose omakase for a meal. Nonetheless, Chef Maru-san and his staff made modifications to the offerings that met the customer's dietary restrictions. For the rest of us, the May seasonal menu was presented in this order...* Starter - Japanese cucumber, seaweed, hairy crab, nasturtium* Appetizer - Hokkaido scallop with myoga ginger, firefly squid, Pacific oysters, otoro from behind the gill and chutoro-- Nigiri, part one* Halibut (Hirame)* Bluefin Tuna Belly (Chutoro)* Striped Jack (Shima-aji)* Giant Clam (Mirugai)* Rosy Seabass (Nodoguro)* Bluefin Tuna Back, marinated (Zuke)* Warm Dish - Steamed halibut with hairy crab stock (dashi)-- Nigiri, part two* Flounder Fin (Engawa)* Scallop, konbu-wrapped (Hotate) * Hairy Crab, chopped including the head and brain (Kegani)* Sea Urchin, Hokkaido (Uni)* Spanish Mackerel (Aji)* Seasonal Simmered Dish - Saki and salt stock, carrot, yellow zucchini, turnip, brussels sprouts-- Nigiri, part three* Abalone (Awabi) with liver and saki sauce* Salmon Egg (Ikura)* Red Bream (Kinmedai)* Sea Eel (Anago)* Soup - Hairy crab with red and white miso* Dessert - Panna cotta with blackberry and strawberryThe chef noted that hairy crab was in season so he made it a point to present the item in three different preparations. This was my first encounter with Kegani which I appreciated. Nothing on the menu was fried and even the use of a blowtorch to sear some fish was judicious. The other highlights for me were the giant sea clam and konbu-wrapped scallop which each had a clean, simple taste. There was plenty of interaction with the chef as he explained each course as it was presented. I peppered him with some questions like where a particular fish was sourced. All of the vegetables came from Chino Farms as the supplier. At the end of the session, you could re-order any item a la carte if it was still in stock. WIth the quality of the seafood used and the excellent presentation of each course, dinner at Sushi MARU was no doubt a five star experience."
