Anthony D. "You're not going to find a lot of Hawaiian food outside of Hawaii so it's awesome to see a place like Chris' Ono serving up some classic grinds. This location is very small with only a few tables outside to eat, so expect to grab your food and take it to-go.I got the combo plate and got half Huli Huli Chicken and Teri Steak + Mac Salad as my side. The mac salad was very creamy and had good flavor. Both the steak and chicken were very tender and moist, not dry at all! It probably helps also that they are smothered in their respective sauces which were very delicious. However I am someone who likes more sauce then less, so for some people it might be a bit much/salty. We also got the Kalua Pork w/additional sides of Sweet Potato Medallions and a side of guava bbq sauce. The pork tasted good however it was a bit too dry. But this is where we recommend getting the additional bbq sauce on the side since this helps to "hydrate" the meat and give it a better moist bite. The sweet potato medallions were also really good! Very tender and the flavor was slightly more potato than sweet potato. There was a small hint of sweetness so I think both sweet potato/potato lovers will enjoy this. Lastly I do wish the portion sizes were a bit bigger. I think of Hawaiian plate lunches as these massive piles of food but here it's definitely more modest in size. I think they could add a couple more pieces of meat on each order but overall I think it's still worth checking out."

Evan K. "This place is so RAW and serves fantastic authentic poke from the mainland! I have tried a few spots when visiting San Diego, and this one is my favorite. In my opinion, they might be better than Hawaiian Fresh, another San Diego poke spot. We arrived late in the afternoon, and there was street parking, but I could see this street getting busier later in the day. There was also a decent line out the door, but it went by quickly. They have a small storefront with drinks and snacks to pair with your poke. Near the cashier, they have all the poke-in trays. Their Spicy Ahi and Furikake Salmon were amazing. The Spicy Ahi was creamy and had just the right amount of spice. The Furikake was similar to a teriyaki sauce. I just got rice for the sides, but I tried out their mac salad, which had stringy noodles, and I loved it. Next time, I'm getting one side of rice and mac salad with my poke plate. I wish they had given a more significant portion of food and more furikake. I would rather have them put it all over the rice, similar to other places, but I understand people enjoy different portions."

The service was great. Multiple servers were ready to take our orders first the way. I ordered a regular poke bowl. I really liked that they have many flavored "dressed" poke options, comparing to the typical poke places that have mostly non flavored fish then asked you for the sauces. I tried their spicy tuna, kimchi tako, and F&T mix. Plenty of topping options. I really enjoyed my poke bowl. The large bowl is a really good deal that my parents shared and enjoyed it too. Mark F. "Had to cleanse our pallets After such a sad plate lunch experience at IPO in Poway and this visit didn't disappoint! Looks like my check-in here glitched. Anyways...ordered online using the L&L mobile app, which offers a fee spam musubi with your first order! The app itself does not offer as polished of an experience as other food chains but I still managed to drop an order with minimal difficulty. To me, nothing can replace the actual experience of plate lunch dining in Hawaii. This continues to be the closest restaurant for me to get a good fix. And all the staples of a good plate lunch are represented at L&L. This L&L location faithfully reproduces that consistent food experience.Ordered several favorites for pickup:- BBQ Combo Plate: everything was yummy and a bit oily, which is to be expected. As always, I want more kalbi like I want for more money.- Seafood Combo Plate: breaded jumbo shrimp and crispy fish that were still juicy inside. Yum!- Hamburger Plate: The mostly juicy burger patties smothered with gravy were a delight to devour with rice and mac.- Spam Musubi: can't complain about getting a free one with my first online order. Definitely had to order another to make it a pair. They were both prepared well. All of my prior experiences visiting this shop have been painfully slow because of its popularity and the inability of the kitchen to seemingly keep pace. The online ordering process, while a bit awkward, eliminated that issue entirely this latest visit. So much so that I'll consider returning more often as long as I can place my orders online to save myself wait time frustrations.Drove up a few minutes after dropping my order. My girl gave my name at the counter and picked up the goods so quickly I didn't have much of a chance to chill after parking the truck.Mahalo!"

Jessica S. "Crazy that this little plate lunch gem is hidden in a strip mall just south of my office, and that a co-worker had to tell me about it. Now, to be fair, I'd been in contact with the owners of Kalei's, working on a catering proposal for the API heritage month kick-off event I hosted in early May. Khara and Chef Andy were incredibly patient and kind, and worked with our budget to create a menu that blew the socks off of everyone who came down to celebrate with us that day. But, this review is not for that catering experience. My friend and I snuck out for lunch one day ahead of the event, to try the food and meet Khara and Chef Andy in person. I'm not usually a big lunch eater, but I had to try the two-item combo. For my mains, I got the Teri Beef and Garlic Chicken, with the white rice and mac salad for my sides ($16). My friend also got the combo, with the Garlic Chicken and Kalua Pork. The inside of the restaurant is tiny, just a few seats at a bar top by the windows, but they do have a couple of tables on the sidewalk out front. We were able to snag two barstools inside (me picking up and turning in the purse of the lady who had just been there; she came back maybe 15 minutes later and profusely thanked me for giving her purse to the staff.) Our food came out quickly, piping hot and filled to the brim. The garlic chicken was crispy and saucy, juicy and crunchy. I loved the flavor. The teri beef was good, saucy and tender, but it did seem a bit salty. I loved their take on the mac salad, as well. My friend, meanwhile, was telling me that the kalua pork was the best she'd ever had (I relayed that to my husband later that day, and he replied, "those are big words, I'll have to see if she's right".)All in all, you're getting good, filling food for decent prices. Plus, you're supporting a small, family-run business, which is always a bonus. My friend and I are already planning our next trip to Kalei's, and plotting who we can bring with us."

Emmett T. "After returning from a recent trip to musubi central (aka Hawaii), I noticed this business showed up as a new listing so I wanted to try their products as a comparison. Musubi Love has taken over the suite that used to house Homestyle Hawaiian in The Galleria Plaza of National City. The signage of the former business was still prominent and made it difficult for me to realize that Musubi Love now operated out of that space. The inside was narrow and small with a service counter and a couple of countertops along the windows that had two stools each for on-site dining. Besides musubi, the menu featured onigiri, rice bowls, sandos, fries, sides, and a few specials. Each of the eight types of musubi cost either $3 or $3.50. The six kinds of onigiri ranged in price between $3 and $4. One of the specials was the Musubi Love Combo. For $12, you can get any three musubi or onigiri and one side.I selected the following for my combo along with a Tuna Mayo onigiri. * Teriyaki Spam* Spam & Egg* Spicy Sausage* Corn CheeseThe size of the musubi was good, however the assembly needed a few tweaks. The nori wrap was chewier than what I had recently experienced in Hawaii. When I bit into it, the seaweed pulled and caused the musubi to fall apart. The meat was a bit saltier than I liked and should have had a closer ratio to the rice. The chopped tuna and Japanese mayo in the onigiri were a very creamy mixture. A tad less mayo would have been my preference. For the corn cheese, I had no issue with the product itself, but for some reason, an extra $0.50 was charged. This side was tied for the least expensive of the five choices so it wasn't because my pick was the priciest one.I also agree with the slow service as my order took about half an hour to be prepared and boxed up. Perhaps the workers were on "island time" as other customers after me also had a long wait for their food. My experience at Musubi Love was at a three star level."

There were traditional small bites like musubi and lumpia. Loco moco and combination lunch plates were also featured. There were no customers in line when I stopped by so I took my time before deciding on a musubi, spam saimin, and lau lau mix plate. The musubi came with Portuguese sausage which was my preference. The size was average for this seaweed-wrapped block of rice. The saimin was served in a plastic takeout container. Two pieces of spam, thin noodles, and green onions were the contents of the soup. The plate contained white rice and macaroni salad as sides and came separately because it took longer to prepare. A serving of kalua pork along with a bundle of steamed taro leaves containing more fatty pork made up the protein. The flavor of the meat wasn't as well-seasoned as I had hoped. For the prices, the food from auntie and uncle was decent. In its place is EWA 88 which not only serves poke but Hawaiian style cuisine too. Plate lunches, shrimp plates, sushi hand rolls, specials, and sides rounded out the menu offerings. For the poke, the protein choices were limited to ahi, salmon, or tako (octopus). However, there were a dozen different mix styles including one that involved torching the protein which was unique to me.I bought a Chili Bowl and a Huli Huli Chicken plate lunch. The island style chili was made up of ground beef and red beans that was ladled over a bed of rice. There was no spiciness to the gravy which is the way it is preferred on the island. The portion size was hefty for the $8 price tag. The sweet soy ginger garlic-glazed chicken was barbequed in another kitchen at a different area of the complex and brought over to the stall. The order included two scoops of rice and one scoop of mac salad. The cook did a nice job of grilling the chicken with an appropriate level of char to the skin. They give you a numbered buzzer that sounds off when your food is ready. Because all items that require grilling is done in the other kitchen, this can add to the preparation time if your food needs to be grilled. The quality and pricing at EWA 88 were decent enough to garner a four star rating from me."
