Wow lots of goodies here. Tamales: in panaderia near the coffee pots. The corn one is sweet, the best corn bread texture tamale ever tasted. Fluffy and warm, not dried out like baked bread. Couldn't tell there was lard in the batter. Left off the sour cream and all the additions to taste the quality of the tamale itself. Usual standard is cheese, pork, chicken in a dense masa filling. The corn tamale looks visibly different after unwrapping. Smooth texture. Daily special Monday. The beef soup is made from beef shank, we tendon so it doesnt fall apart. Very filling. Hard to finish by 1 person. Mondays only. The daily specials are something which takes a long time to cook with a limited amount to limit waste. Caldo de res better than most restaurants. Daily Special Tue: Chicken Mole. $16. Ordered wo rice and beans. Leave off the rice and beans so it doesn't soak up the sauce unless you want the extra portions. Impossible for 1 person to finish. Comes with drumstick and thigh and small piece of breast meat. Incredible mole sauce. Little spicy, buttery, fruity, smoky, very complex flavor. Not sweet. In the process of tasting the sauce, it starts with a slight mexican oregano sensation turning slightly spicy then a little spicy and buttery. Flavor profile changes over time as the sauce sits in mouth. The crappy moles don't change over time. Better version of a thai curry. Flavors very complex. Tastes like the sauce was made from fresh ingredients. Served with stack of corn tortillas to eat the sauce with. Trick is you have to get it while it is freshly made. The spices only retain flavor for a short time after cooking. I got there at 11am. Most of the restaurants make a batch, cool it and reheat. After a reheat or if it sits too long in the pot the flavor has evaporated. Best mole ever tasted. The sauces in the restaurants are dried out and don't have bright flavors like this version. Those taste premade and reheated. This version is fresh for tue special. Definite difference in flavor profile. Salsa and cheese counter in back next to the meat counter. The avocado salsa and habanara salsa they dont have in most markets. Avocado salsa slightly sour, salty, creamy and spicy. Habanara salsa very thick w tomatillo. Distinct; spicier than any commercial salsa with higher quality ingredients. never seen a salsa this thick in a commercial product. Most are watered down. The salsas were 10x better than anything in WF or Costco or any American supermarket. The ones here have better texture, fresher, not the watery consistency in stores. They do that deliberately to make more profit. Outrageous once you figure that out. Jamaica: 6.99 lb vs the insane $15.00 lb pound charged by amazon. Use it to make fresh tea or healthy iced tea. Same stuff starbucks sells. This isn't the safest area and the cashiers aren't highly paid. There are occasional homeless eating at the hotbar area where they are selling hot food. There are multiple vendors in the parking lot selling things from wiper replacements for your car to flan. Everybody is bilingual but some choose to not speak english if you go there. Cashiers vary in friendliest. Most are very sweet. One could see I was enjoying the mole and handed me extra napkins.

Total staple of San Jose. Grew up eating their pan dulce. Always delish traditional mexican bread. There is always so many fresh breads in stock. Waaay better than doughnuts! The store itself has lots of verity and is clean compared to many other grocery stores. Parking may be rough, but you can always get your Mexican treats at La Tropicana Foods.

do not give them your phone number for specials - they text you constantly, and even when you text STOP to opt out, they CONTINUE to text you with new numbers so you can never get rid of them. They text you once a month. I called in to ask them to remove me from the system and the manager HUNG UP ON ME. SUPER unprofessional.

This was my first time shopping at Tropicana foods. Since I moved to the bay area from Southern California I have been going to different Latin American supermarkets to try to find the one with the best selection and also to find one that has more unique or hard to find items. I was greatly impressed with several items that I found at this store. In the produce section they had fresh sugar cane, cactus fruit tuna, and yucca. I also found several brands of Mexican mole in different flavors all of them imported from Mexico. In their frozen section I also found loroco, exotic fruits like jocotes, guava, and Nances. They have a huge selection of meats, although I didn't buy any. I also found a large selection of different brands of tostadas and also oaxacan tlayudas in white or blue corn. The tlayudas are extremely hard to find in other places. Prices for some things were good snd a bit high for others. However you cannot beat the the good selection on some harder to find ingredients. They also sell tamal dough in different flavors such as plain (for making savory tamales), strawberry or pineapple. I also saw a very interesting display with bulk candies for making baby shower gifts. They also have a good selection of Piñatas.

Horrible management & customer service at Tropicana Foods & Bakery. My parents bought their house in East Side San Jose since early 1960's and my entire family has been coming to Tropicana for years but after today I will NEVER step foot inside this Mexican grocery store at all as every time I have gone grocery shopping I keep getting falsely accused of stealing from Tropicana employees and honestly I am just speechless as every time I go to Tropicana I spend a lot of money since honestly the prices are a lot higher than other stores but I would always go to Tropicana cause it's the closest convenient grocery store for me and my family. Over the years I have been accused WRONGFULLY OF STEALING at Tropicana Foods & Bakery but I will NOT CONTINUE GOING THROUGH THIS WRONGFUL ABUSE. I have never stolen anything from Tropicana if anything we have always purchased lots of groceries and Mexican bread but will NOT CONTINUE SHOPPING AT THIS STORE ANY MORE it was extremely disrespectful, bad business ethics, poor business management, VERY RACIST......
