A definite San Jose staple. Been my go-to spot for delicious Mexican munchies and drinks for the last 15 years. The home of the original Chavelas, which are simply unmatched. Oscar is the O.G of the establishment and gives 110% each time we dine here. This spot gets a bad rep for the delayed service and long wait times on busy spurts, but if you're not in a rush, it's not an issue. Absolutely recommend!

I give this 3 stars because the service was good welcoming staff and fast service. Nice area classic Mexican restaurant but food was not for me. originally came for just a shrimp michelada I have to say it wasn't my favorite the shrimp lacked flavor and there was chunck of what looked like fatty grease or lard inside and on the glass I didn't finish it. decided to get a plate as well we had the table chips and salsa chips taste like they were fried with lard which I didn't mind at 1st but the Salsa was delicious n I got the chorizo con papas plate, it was just ok but it had the same taste as the chips with that lingering taste of lard, it just didn't set with me.

It's been a long while since I have been to Tlaquepaque. This was jammed packed in the past, but on the night we went, it wasn't that busy. I got the combo #11 with Chile Relleno, Burrito with chile verde, chicken enchilada with rice and beans. Everything tasted great. The price was under $20. Our service was good. The only negative was the music was so loud it made it difficult to hear the conversation that was going on at our table.

This place has literally no staff. Came in Thursday around 4pm and we stood at the waiting area for a while til my husband walked in and then the lady came and sat us at a table. She was the only worker there. She was taking orders, making cocktail drinks, cashiering, answering phones and bussing tables. It took a hot minute to get chips and salsa but when we did they were nice and hot (their salsa was fresh and spicy). We usually stick to super tacos de carne asada. However, we decided to try the chile rellenos, a wet burrito and nachos today as well. Let's start with the nachos 7/10:They only offer shredded chicken or ground beef now, when we asked for steak she said no that's not an option even after we said we would pay any difference in price for the steak but she still said no. That was frustrating!Chile rellenos 3/10: The chile itself has a lot of cheese and was cooked well but the sauce they flooded it in was nasty it had a very canned soup bland taste to it. Wet burrito 7/10: the burrito was big and filled with good eats but the red sauce was more of a canned enchilada style sauce not a red chile sauce, still wasn't too bad. They did add more lighting but it's still dark inside. It's definitely not a vibe but like I said I always come for the steak super tacos. You do need to add their red salsa to make them taste really good. I feel bad for the lady she was the only working the whole dinning area with several customers. Also, when we left I stopped the by the restroom which had no toilet paper and their sink wastes so much water as it seems to be broken when you press the handle down to wash your hands. Sadly I don't think this place will last too much longer. ***On the upside they do take digital pay NOW***

Okay so when this place first opened a very long time ago lol. This was the spot they would have huge lines . They are famous for their Chavelas. Which is a cold beer with lime and salt on the rim in a huge cold glass . A super Chavela has tequila . You also have a choice of light or dark beer. My parents still love this place so whenever I'm in town they like to bring me here . Inside it's a little dated noting fancy . Service is okay it could be faster but they are friendly. The food is still very good to me . I kinda outgrown the Chavelas since I drink more of a craft beer now a days but I will still have one here and there . They also have a great aguas de Horchata . They bring out complementary chips and salsa to your table and waters. My favorite is the combination quesadilla which has cheese, bacon, bell peppers, and mushrooms so good ! It also comes with some sour cream, pico de gallo and guacamole on the side . The prices are very affordable, and the sizes are very generous. I know a lot of new Mexican places have opened in San Jose but this one I still has a sweet spot for since I have memories coming with friends and family here. So I would definitely be back.

Oh boy. I looked at reviews carefully and thought I'll give them benefit of doubt. Ordered take out. A simple order of chicken enchiladas & burrito. Service was polite, with a smile - although that's not enough when you return home and find a mushed fat fly in your enchiladas. No point contacting this place because unfortunately, I just won't return. I simply don't trust the cleanliness and food practices of the kitchen. What a shame.

This has been our go-to spot for dinner whenever we're craving Mexican food for years and years. We come for the food, not the ambiance. The atmosphere is okay, nothing special and it kind of feels dirty. The staff are nice, but the service has definitely gone down across the years due to the restaurant being severely understaffed. There's often many tables with dishes left there from previous diners and you'll likely have to flag down your server if you need anything. For the food, we love the carnitas! It's the reason why we keep coming back. They're delicious, tender, and crispy. My go-to order is a carnitas quesadilla with a side of rice - super tasty! Their chips and salsa are always really good too.

This has been on my list ever since a friend recommended it. It's not much to look at and is dingy inside but they do serve some good authentic Mexican food or so I am told. + points for playing some classic Vincente Fernandez. The chavela was plentiful and refreshing to get started and went well with the complimentary tortilla chips. The chilleno relleno was my favorite item. The rice and beans were good too. The chicken quesadilla and enchilada were ok. On the negative side, they messed up both of our orders.
