Sumiya Bento is a little offshoot from its bigger Sumiya and Gaku origins, and it can be viewed sort of like a Sumiya Express. Sumiya Bento focuses on a condensed menu that offers the best and popular items that you would want in the area without the need to drive all the way to Santa Clara. I've tried out a good portion of the offerings here, with the Bento Deluxe being a standard favorite. Otherwise, I venture around with other combos if I'm not as hungry.Customizable in different rice options, salad dressing, and a side that allows many different flavor combinations to keep things interesting. Each side is delicately prepared by the friendly staff and the casual dining room complements the meal. The Yuzu citrus dressing is my personal favorite that adds an amazing bright and fresh flavor to the side salad. Especially complementary if you decide on getting skewers that are a little more on the heavier side. Also, miso soup is complementary if you dine-in. Great value and delicious food.

Straight forward walk up (order at the counter) place that serves Yakitori style bento. Select your protein (skewered meats, seafood or tofu), select your sides and rice. Seating is basic cafeteria style and they will call out your number when your food is ready to pick up.Our meats were on the salty side but tender.Overall rather pedestrian, and probably best as a quick lunch option.

For Japanese skewers, this is the place to go! This is one of my family's staple take-out places. They have a few different combos, but we usually get Bento B or Bento Deluxe plus a few extra skewers.I really like how customizable the combos are! You get to choose from 4 different rice options that are uniquely Japanese. The takikomi one is my favorite, which has mushrooms and some meat mixed in. You can also choose from many appetizers, and we usually get the agedashi tofu or chicken karaage. You can even customize the salad dressing - I always get the yuzu citrus, which has a nice bright taste. My family usually gets extra beef and chicken skewers so we have leftovers for a couple more days. The portion is pretty large, I usually can't finish all the rice and am super full after 3 skewers! The restaurant is located in a big shopping plaza around lots of other restaurants. The parking lot is usually very busy, but it's big so no issues finding a spot. I haven't eaten inside before, but every time we go it's not too busy, so I'm sure finding a table to eat would be no problem. Definitely try this place out for a more casual, Japanese skewer meal!

Sumiya Bento is the real deal. It's a perfect blend of delicious and authentic flavors for a very reasonable price. They specialize in Kushiyaka, or charcoal-grilled skewers, but what really impresses me about Sumiya is the quality of the sides that accompany the skewers in the bento boxes. With every bento you can pick one of seven different appetizers, as well as what toppings you want with your rice. Even the side salad is impressive with the different dressings they offer including Ume Miso and Yuzu Citrus, both of which I can vouch for being excellent.More than your typical bento, Sumiya Bento truly feels like a multi-course meal in a box, and all for under $20 which is an absolute steal with the way prices have been going lately. When my wife and I left, we immediately started talking about when we could come back to eat here again and there isn't a much clearer sign of a five-star experience than that.

Online order for lunch. If you order at 11:30 which is their opening time, the website will tell you that the earliest you can pick up is almost 12. And when I was in the middle of ordering, the pick up time shifted to 12:15. However, when I went to the store, it was already ready before 12:10, so not too bad for the wait on a Tuesday. We got both the combo B with one skewer of chicken, one skewer of beef short rib and one skewer of pork belly. All meat tasted chewy and hard to eat. The rice with an egg which added $1 is kid friendly and the egg plant side dish is also delicious. But overall the quality of the bento is just so so, Sumiya dine in is much better.

Sumiya Bento had been on my list for a while, so I decided to stop by during a quiet lunch hour during the weekday and opted to eat inside the restaurant. It was pretty quiet with only one party eating inside and a couple to go orders in and out during the time I was there. They offer quite a few options of skewers set meals to pick from and even udon and rice bowls too. I opted for the 3 skewer pork belly meal set and chose the agedashi tofu as my side, coming out to about $20 before tip. The set meal also includes a small salad, pickled veggies, and a side of soup. You are able to pick the type of rice and for an additional dollar or two, it could come with some extra toppings. The food was ready within 5 minutes and looked very well put together. The pork belly was simple but tasty, complimented with a dash of salt and some green onions. The miso soup was loaded with seaweed and tofu, making it flavorful and hearty. I picked the wasabi mayo dressing which was really tasty for the salad. I enjoyed the agedashi tofu and the sauce that it came with as well. I think the portion was on the smaller side but the quality of the meal was definitely there. I can see this becoming one of my go to places for a quick lunch during the work week when I'm craving a well balanced and satisfying meal.

I was driving around and saw a 99 Ranch market complex and hoped that there would be restaurants to have lunch. I found this location after driving around the parking lot. I really liked their bento concept where you get to chose to make your own bento. First, you choose the skewers types you want, I went to with pork belly. Second, you choose type of rice, I went with takigomi. Third, you choose appetizer, I went with eggplant. Lastly, you choose salad dressing. Everything was really tasty and good. The only negative but not too negative is that it is pricey for lunch.

I was staying at the Sonesta across the street. A bento box sounded perfect for dinner. I ordered bento box b. The skewers were yummy. The salad dressing was good. The nori and yakitori sauce added so much flavor to the rice. When I am back I am definitely coming back here.
