First of all, it was really hard to find this deli, even when I had Siri navigating me. I pulled into the parking lot of Raymond's Sourdough Bread Outlet and discovered there's a side door way down at the corner. There was no signage but apparently that's Subculture Deli!! Bright royal blue door looks like the back entrance to the kitchen but sure enough, if you keep going beyond the chairs, you'll see menus posted on the wall and a cash register to take your order. Wow, I have never been to a place like this! Apparently all the regular locals know to order ahead and drive up for easy pick up. What I didn't like was that there was no place to eat so you have to grab and go. What surprised me the most was the thin layer of bread vs filling. I really appreciate the ratio. I tried the hot roast beef and hot pastrami and definitely preferred the hot roast beef way more. I've never had a hot roast beef before and it was pretty good. Was it out of this world amazing? No, it was just a regular sandwich but I appreciated the friendly service. $13.66 for a standard soft roll -- the bread did taste very soft and fresh, probably because they get it from Raymond's next door! Be prepared to wait about 10 minutes if you want a hot sandwich or otherwise order ahead of time like they recommend.

i can't remember if i left a review before but this place is so damn good. owner is fun to talk to if you like bbq and sous vide. he is a big fan of both and so am i. it does take a while to get your food as most call in but i already knew that so the wait was weighing my expectations. however - plan to wait if you don't call in. they get lost of take out and call ins. raymond's bread is right next door as well. most people don't eat here so ambiance isn't something i will bring up. to owner - it's been years - make new shirts! happy to rep sub culture!

If I had to power rank delis/sandwiches in South San Francisco, Subculture Deli takes the top spot on my list. And yes, I've eaten at the other popular spots multiple times, and for me it's not even close. The owner was saying they make every sandwich like it was for his mom, so you know he's not playing around. I love you when a business talks a big game about their food and backs it up every time. Quality flavor, meats, and damn good chili. What more could you ask for? This latest visit I decided to go with the bbq cow palace. Normally bbq sauce in a sandwich can be hit or miss, and subcultures, hits. It doesn't look like a huge sandwich but it's super filling. The toasted bread is always a plus, and it was devoured in minutes. No trip to subculture would be complete unless I get an order of their chili. It's easily the best tasting chili I've eaten in the bay. You can purchase by the gallon, which would be perfect for a football Sunday or game day eats at home. The hot sandwiches can take some time to make, and it's worth it. If you are in a rush or time crunch, definitely call ahead instead of ordering in person. They've been around for almost 14 years, and it's still one of the best hidden secrets. If you love sandwiches as much as I do, subculture should be on your list to try!

Awesome sandwich spot with a wide selection of snacks and beverages. I also like that the sandwiches are huge and you can essentially have two separate portions.

The guy is very friendly. I really like him. his personality. Make me go back and have another sandwich. Pretty pretty good except that no avocados. They were not ready until the following day, but the sandwich was bomb and also the chili beans bomb. The place look like a hole in the wall strip club. lol

Finally tried this deli out. Thw owner was super cool and we had a great conversation. This deli is no relation to Raymond's, they don't even get bread from them either. But please try this gem out, won't be disappointed.

I talk a lot, but these sandwiches are one of the things that render me speechless. I don't know what they put on their tuna melt (garlic butter? I don't know) but dear God it's delicious. When I made my online order, I wrote in the comments to maybe make it with Dutch Crunch, thinking it would elevate it somehow, and I love Dutch Crunch. They didn't do it (probably because it's considered a specialty sandwich), but I was an idiot to think I know more about sandwiches than these guys because after eating it it is CLEAR that these are the sandwich wizards of South San Francisco. The ambiance isn't very epic: it's a simple and straightforward building with little to no seating. But you aren't there to sip your coffee and work on your screenplay. You aren't there to make it your "third place" and sit for hours. You're there for sandwiches. Delicious sandwiches with delightful bread. And maybe a drink and some chips.Speaking of which, I felt like I could have stayed because the workers were really nice. I've read some of the reviews that say the service isn't so good, but I didn't experience that at all, so take that how you want. The owner(?) even called me because I ordered my sandwich WAY too early and he wanted to make sure I was actually coming to get it. (Pro tip: when ordering online PUT YOUR PICK UP TIME IN THE COMMENT SECTION. That way they know when you're coming). In short, eat a sandwich here. Support this business. But more bread. Eat more bread. Have more joy in your life. You deserve it.
